Also, while I agree winning a world cup doesn't make someone the best; given it's a team trophy, neither does doing it in different leagues. What makes Messi superior to Ronaldo is that he's always been the better footballer, who as a result provides more for his team. Ronaldo at his peak was much more than just the poacher he's become, yet his greatness has always been defined far more by goals than Messi. Some of Messi's best ever performances have come in games where he hasn't scored, while Ronaldo's iconic matches are big games where he's scored goals. Messi has always been a far superior dribbler, is able to dictate the play with his passing, and has exceptional vision. For him at 35 to be doing what he is at this world cup just underlines further why he's the best ever.

Messi single handedly won the games against Serbia, Iran and Nigeria, made the magic play against Switzerland, played the pass of the tournament to De Maria against Holland, and in the final put it on plate for Higuaín to win the game in regulation time but Higuaín missed a sitter. Messi was head and shoulders above any other player in the tournament and had 4 MOTM awards, but the footballing genius that is Morgan calls that "not turning up". His comment can't be taken seriously, he's just paid to push Ronaldo, and the fact that Ronaldo needs mouths for hire like Morgan speaks volumes.

Piers has very selective memory. 2014 World Cup Messi won all three Argentina games. 4 goals in three matches. Let's be honest if Lionel Messi had told Piers Morgan that he had great abs like Ronaldo did and did a sit down interview with him he'd be saying Messi was the best. The fact some regarded CR as a better performer at international level, due to his goal record, was always completely flawed. Most of those goals came in qualifying, against some of the worst footballing nations around. The majority of those goals were against sides like Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Armenia, Andorra, Faroe Islands, etc. Messi doesn't face sides anywhere near that weak in his qualifying group. Not to mention, Messi has had more standout tournaments for his country and won 3 best player awards at those, while Ronaldo has never won any.

It’s such a pointless debate that will seemingly never end. Stats aside, it really comes down to who do you prefer watching? For me it’s Messi every day of the week. Messi reminds me of that one kid at school, who you could never get the ball off and way just miles better than everyone else. I’m sure everyone has played football with someone like that at some point. The difference is Messi has been doing that at the highest level for years. For me, there’s just a level of excitement you get when Messi is on the ball and he’s dribbling past 3 or 4 defenders and nobody can touch him. He’s scored some ridiculous solo goals, but for me it’s not just the goals, it’s the ability to spot a pass and play the ball with perfect weight for the receiving players. He seems to spot passes and be one step ahead all the time. Some of his assists are more beautiful than the goals he’s scored. Ronaldo is phenomenal, no doubt about that, but this GOAT debate comes down to personal preference and for me it’s Messi. I know it won’t but I just wish this debate would go away and we could all just appreciate that we’ve witnessed two of the most sensational players to have ever played the game, playing at the same time. Both are nearing the end of their careers, so let’s just be thankful that we witnessed those careers in their entirety. It will be a long time until we see the likes of either of them again.

Better goal per game ratio. Way more assists, much better dribbler. Now just won World Cup with player of the tournament and last year won Copa in Brazil against Brazil as player of the tournament. The debate is done.

ON the biggest stage, the world cup, Messi has dragged Argentina to 2 finals in 8 years and the one in between they were beaten 4-3 by the champions France with a shocking team, and Messi has got several goals and assists in the knockouts of world cup games, and has scored in the last 16, QF and SF of this world cup alone and Ronaldo in 5 world cups has never scored or assisted in a knockout game.

I think that is a stretch. def top 5 but messi is the def the goat. I think because ronaldo has scored 800+ goals and 200+ assists and won 5 ballondors he shud be top 5 minimum. However, there are players who are more technical and better than him in other aspects of the game. However, his goal contributing achivements alone deserve to make him top 5 in the history of the game.

Messi is above Ronaldo in almost every important individual stat. Goals per game, assists per game, goal participation rate, goals outside the box, free kick goals, goals per shot, shots on target, dribble success rate/defenders dribbled passes per chance, average match rating, and has almost double man of the match awards than Ronaldo. It’s not even close on an individual performance. I love Ronaldo, he has incredible footwork, insane power and some of the best goals I’ve ever seen, and impressive accolades, but Messi is the better player all around without question for me.

It clearly shows how ignorant people are when they base their argument on how hard CR7 trains. How do you know Messi doesn't train just as hard or even harder than CR7. Even if Argentina lose on Sunday, this tournament has ended this debate (in Messi’s favour of course) for good. Ronaldo is more ‘goals and stats dependent’ than Messi. Messi has a better goals per game ratio, and has scored more non-penalty goals. Plus he has significantly more assists, and Ronaldo’s 0 goals and 0 assists in World Cup knockout stage games vs. Messi’s contributions is stark. And beyond stats it was clear to me since 2008/2009 that Messi has been the better player, with superior ability in terms of dribbling, passing, creating space, linking up and involving other players etc. I can think of many more matches when Messi hasn’t scored but has still been the best player on the pitch or at least excellent, than Ronaldo.

yeah i think they wanted to cut ronaldo salary and make him 2nd star or something, he was pissed. Ronaldo's pace had dropped off and madrid disliked it.

The metrics Piers uses to compare Messi & Ronaldo (goals, trophies etc) aren't the same metrics he uses to compare Messi and Maradona...

Exactly. He says Maradona is better than Messi because he wins a World Cup. But Ronaldo is better than Messi despite never scoring a goal in a WC knock out, because Ronaldo has more goals. But Messi has more goals than Maradona, but that doesn't count. and suddenly it's not world cups but total goals. This is the thing with Ronaldo fanboys (or paid agents like Morgan) the arguments they come up with are just embarrassing, they are cringe-worthy, but because there's so many RM and ManU fans, it doesn't matter how many times their stupidity is called out, another one just takes their place.

Unfair judgement from a renown media personality whom we owe a wholesome respect. Cristiano didn't win the world cup and his team was lost to Atlantic lions, but Messi won it. Messi fought until the last moment, and proved to be a staunched captain.

If you talk about challenge and comfort zone, don't forget that Messi has taken the Argentine team to two finale of the most competitive tournament, world cup by carrying the whole team on his own shoulder.

But even this comfort argument is silly. Ronaldo didn’t play for Stoke, Calgari and Real betis, he played for the biggest team in England Spain and Italy. Ronaldo and Messi played together in Spain for 9 years. Messi won 6 titles in that time Ronaldo won 2.

Messi: better goalscorer, better dribbler, better playmaker, better passer, better IQ, better freekicks, better decision making Ronaldo: Faster, better in the air, better penalties As players the argument isn’t even close, Messi is clearrrrrrrr 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐

Messi is an angelic figure. He's selfless and leads by example. Of course he plays like a lion on the pitch. But he helps his team mates, gives away goals even when he's on his way to a hattrick. Can you imagine Ronaldo doing something like that? Ronaldo also started a tsunami of slander v Messi when he won his 7th Ballon d'or. Messi said not a word. Messi never badmouths anyone.

He is saying Messi is not even better than Maradona. But just a couple weeks ago he said Messi is number 2 behind Ronaldo. Shameless Contradictions 😂

With that I just thing he was a scape goat. Winning the league was def not a challenge but winning the ucl with a juve team that hadnt won it in 3 decades or so is a challenge.

The first and only footballing attribute piers mentioned in this interview as to why Ronaldo is better, was the fact he’s better in the air , says it all
