Messi has always been a superior footballer to Ronaldo. Both are incredible goalscorers, yet Messi's passing, vision and ability as a dribbler are on another level. The fact he's still showing that on the biggest stage of all at 35 just underlines further why he's the greatest. CR at his peak was of course far more than just a goalscorer, yet he's been dependent on the service of teammates over the last five years. Not to mention, he's never had a standout world cup; and has failed to even score or assist a single world cup knockout goal. The argument also that Messi needs to do it in the PL is utterly ridiculous. This is someone who has shown it against all the best club teams in the CL and at international level. Also, many of the greatest ever players never played in England. That goes for Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, R9, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Iniesta, Xavi, Rivaldo and countless others. Anyone who has any understanding of the game knows Messi has nothing to prove.

Ronaldo hasn’t been relying on service for 5 years at all. Did you even watch him at juve? Legit just two years ago when he was at juve he was performing on a similar level to what Messi is now. Ronaldo was more of a left forward for juve and was still skinning people and bagging crazy goals. He scored that goal coming over his head on the volley. Insane technique. Ronaldo has fell off this season but I think it’s more personal issues made his ability diminish more and then his mentality broken because of his ability finally falling off.

Messi was always a better player anyway….but the English premier league is known as the toughest league in club football generally. Managers who have managed in several of them all say the same thing.

I couldn't say if he's the best sportsman ever but if you look through the lens of do they inspire others and play their sport in the best spirit of sportsmanship. Every match I have ever seen him play in, he has played with a positive attitude and usually with a smile on his face, he gets kicked up and down the pitch but never throws a strop, he tracks back to help his team and always looks for the best option pass or shoot. Messi is definitely the greatest footballer I've ever seen and it is just his phenomenal talent. Greatest sports person who knows but every time Messi has left opposition players chasing shadows a smile comes to my face even when he did it against Liverpool.

If Pep was somehow able to bring Messi into Man City next summer (which is very unlikely and just a fans dream), imagine the damage Messi would cause to every team Man City play against? He only has 1 clay court grand slam (where Nadal has 10+) and someone else had to beat Nadal for Federer to get to the final. Djokovic is far more versatile across all surfaces and Federer only edges him on grass. Not to mention Djok is far more dominant across all 4 slams and will not only end with the most, but might even overtake Fed on the one slam he’s dominant on, Wimbledon. Djok’s peak was more dominant, superior head to head against both Fed and Rafa, but Federer’s play style looks more elegant. That’s about it.

It's true that Messi can do some stuff that Ronaldo doesn't do as well. And it's also true that Ronaldo can do certain things that Messi doesn't do as well. Like how to score goals with one's hair. Or assist a goal with his back. Or how to be a captain while sitting on the bench, from the beginning of the match. I don't think CR7 is a better finisher at all, i guarantee Messi's goal to shot ratio is much better. CR7 was fantastic though and on top of that imagine if Messi was better with his head and right foot but stilll he is so close to CR7 in goals!!

Messi is the best finisher ever too. It is very very rare you won’t see him not hit the target at least, absolute clinician. Whereas Ronaldo just goes for power and you see where his free kicks end up. At the wall or 30m over the bar.

I've always favoured Messi but when they have done what they have done i think it more just comes down to personally preference of what u like to watch, but judging them now against each other abit different from judging how they were in there prime, especially when bring former players into it but only take there prime years! Ronaldo, last year in fairness, still scored many goals in the prem for a struggling, disjointed Man Utd....but he's also older! Either way, just total respect for the careers they've both had!

The 'more goals' argument for Ronaldo needs context. To date: Messi App: 1003, goals 793 (mins per goal =104), Ronaldo App: 1145, goals 819 (mins per goal 113). Assist stats are not even worth comparing.

Football fans have short memory. It was just last season Messi only had 4 league goals after his debut season in a league that isn’t even top 5. Ronaldo won an international trophy for his country before Messi. The Euros is also played every 4 years so it’s as hard as the World Cup unlike the Copa that’s every 2 years. Ronaldo is older and Ronaldo was phenomenal at 35. We all agree he’s had a bad year or couple of months but where was this talk of the debate being over last year or even after Ronaldo won the nations league and Barcelona were struggling. Messi is great but if people view as this godly talent then why is he still neck and neck with Ronaldo in terms of achievement and statistics with Ronaldo. If a hardworking man has achieved just as much as the one who is seen as an alien then Messi has underachieved
