@@hridoyabdullah5133 Depends what you mean by IQ. His vision/playmaking abilities are better sure but IQ can mean a lot of different things. Ronaldo’s knowledge of when to make runs, timing of jumps for headers, movement in the box etc is better than Messi’s. Point being if you take stats completely out of it I’d still much rather watch Ronaldo play than Messi as would millions of others. The types of skills, dribbles, flicks, freekicks, long range goals, acrobatics, improvisation are completely unique. Examples would be bicycle vs juventus, 40 yard screamer vs porto, knuckleball freekicks, stepovers and chops beating multiple defenders and then scoring. Messi could never do these things.

CR7 in reverse at max was a Winger , and step by step assumed lesser responsibility and became a poaching striker. Not that it's a bad thing but it's a lot more difficult to score from Playmaker position , free kicks , from outside the Box etc. I am not even gonna talk about the Assists part , no point in comparing. I am a Fan of Ronaldo , Grew up watching him at Man UTD. Messi came to my radar much later in 2010. I only meant the Coverage in my country was mostly EPL. The coverage of LA LIGA grew later. I knew about Messi as he finished Second & my Favourite striker Fernando Torres at the time was 3rd In BALLON d'or where Ronnie WON. I hadn't watched much of Messi by that time.

@Prithvi haas why is an attacking midfielder more important than a winger or viceversa? Why do you put more value to a midfielder than a defender or a goalkeeper. Football is a game where there are many positions and style of play on the field. Messi is the best attacking midfielder and Cr7 is the best winger, they both play different positions and different styles.

Well it’s funny because Messi’s 6 goals this World Cup 4 come from pens and 2 from open play. Even more ironic he could have 5 pens and 2 goals from open play. It’s Messi. Always has been. Always will be. Ultimately though, I just couldn’t be more thankful than to have been blessed with the opportunity to watch them both play and compete against each other. No matter what they are two of the greatest footballers of all time, and I just wish I had gotten into the beautiful game just a couple years earlier so I could’ve appreciated them just a bit longer.

I mean how is he wrong dude? Ronaldo's finishing (His acrobatic finishing is even better) is top tier, Ronaldo is one of the fastest players, Ronaldo's is one of the best headers ever, Ronaldo's dribbling is great and his skills are way better than most players, And lastly Ronaldo's passes are top tier as well even tho you can't compare them to messi (see the chances ronaldo creates in his matches.) Messi is the best at dribbling, He is fast but not that fast compared to ronaldo (his acceleration is prolly better cuz of his size and his dribbling is quite fast as well), Messi's finishing is amazing as well, Messi is below average when it comes to heading messi is below average (he has a very few great headers but they are not consistent). and lastly his passing is one of the best. From a playmaker's perspective Ronaldo who can win aerial battles and who has top notch accuracy and finishing is way better than Messi who himself is a playmaker who focuses on dribbling and passes while taking opportunities at the goal.

Agreed. Ronaldo was an incredible dribbler when he was younger and in his prime. Ronaldo would use skill moves to beat opponents things he worked on every single day, and his skill moves were practical he didn’t just do them to be flashy he did them to beat opponents. Messi never really had to learn skills moves because his dribbling was at such an unprecedented level naturally he could beat players without having to try and trick them. The ball is glued to his foot and it seems like he never has to think about how to beat a player, his mind and body just immediately know what to do in every given situation and for me that is the difference and that is why Messi is the better player. Messi’s natural ability and inherent footballing intelligence cannot be surpassed no matter how hard anyone trains and improves.

It’s not necessarily a criticism but the way Messi values an assist just as much as a goal, and then they way that Ronaldo sometimes acts when his teammate scores instead of passing the ball to Ronaldo and then gets visibly upset throwing his hands in the air because someone else on his team scored. Also the way he’s acted recently where if he’s not the number 1 guy playing every min of every game and being the main difference maker then he sort of acts like a child. I understand that no one wants to be on the bench, but when you act and lash out instead of accepting that he has to kind of change his role as he gets older makes me question if he really does have passion for the game or just for his personal success within the game which are 2 different things

I think that Ronaldo’s passion for achievements/personal records and personal success has actually been a positive for him instead of a negative. I think that’s the only reason he has worked harder than any other player in the history of the game. But there is an important different between that passion and then passion for the game itself

You’re just describing a midfielder which can score and assist. That’s not being complete. That’s just being a midfield player. Ronaldo used to be called a complete striker. Because he could score with both feet and head. Add to that long shots and free kicks

Not to mention he is the only player to ever reach 100+ g/a and maintained that g/a level regularly. Of the top 5 players with most g/a Messi is in that list 3 times with 90+. Only other players to hit 90+ is Pele and Gerd Muller. This is what makes a complete player. CR7 was more complete than Muller tho but Pele and Messi, even Maradona were different beasts

For anyone who says Messi is naturally talented and didn't have to work as hard as other players, then you're not acknowledging the fact that Messi has been creating these magic moments for 15 years!! If he didn't work as hard, he would have had his peak for as long as Maradona had, which wasn't even 10 years of top level football.

The debate was fake from the very beginning. We had a debate because media needs one. They picked Messi and wanted to compare him against the second which in Messi era this has been clearly CRonaldo. The only debate was if Messi was the GOAT. Messi Vs Maradona was the real debate. For me the debate was settled 5 years ago. We have a King. long life to the King.

The thing with this question is its actually not close. There is a substential gap between Messi and Ronaldo. Messi younger with more goals than ronaldo overall and a better goals to game ratio. Messi is the one of the best passers ever. The best dribbler ever. Better free kick taker. When people speak about Ronaldo as if he's better they usally present basless arguments, and it's usally either a woman and Amercian or likley somone who does not watch football regulary and just like Ronaldo because of his image. You can't use that Ronaldo has went to other leagues cause even when you stay at a team it can change a lot over a short period and when new managers/coaches come in they will probably change tactics so you have to learn all over again every season regardless if you stay or go because its always changing so you are always having to adapt

Yeah I liked how messi attitude was with psg where he never disrespected the manager coming out like that. But then messi was also not treated in the same manner. But then that also has to do with a fact that psg are always in champions league, messi didn't even care much for psg. While ronaldo came at his former club where things were terrible and weren't in ucl. Plus psg had better players. The one thing I really liked about messi is that he kept his focus on the wc. Messi has been seen as the 🐐 in the general public eyes. There’s a lot of goalpost moving going on. First it was Messi hasn’t won an international tournament (ends up winning 2 in a year and also won Golden balls in 3 different intl. competition- 1st in history) Then it was he’s nothing without Xavi and Iniesta (won 2 ballon D’ors without them) Lastly, he can’t perform outside of Barca (took Argentina to 6 finals and is psg’s best player and helped them regain the league title). Messi’s the most complete attacking threat we’ve ever seen, he and destroy teams from the halfway line, let alone the penalty box. He’s the best goalscorer, assist, playmaker and dribbler we’ve seen rolled into one. Enjoy him.

Mascherano was far better in the knockout stages. In 4 games they went to extra time 4 times they didn't concede a single goal in the 90 minutes and only concede 1 goal in those 4 games which was in extra time against germany. But think of all the times Messi has made players/managers/pundits who most certainly do know football say “how has he done that, I can’t believe what I just saw.” As corny, overused, and stolen the original comment may be it does have some truth to it. Ronaldo does things that we have already seen other players do before but he does it at a much higher level. Apart from goal, Ronaldo doesn't do anything and even with the goals that he's known for, Messi has a better goal to game ratio. Moreover, Ronaldo can't replicate the goal scoring he's known for in the biggest stage in football.

Anyway, Messi is faster than Cristiano and has better balance because he gets knocked over WAY less, which obviously means he has to dive less. 2. Scoring headers doesn’t matter because the type of goal is irrelevant. Messi has a HGH issue so it’s not fair to compare them in that aspect. Anyway, Messi still scored a header against Cristiano with a header in the 2009 UCL final so who’s more effective? 3. For the last time, scoring in different leagues doesn’t matter because Cristiano evolved into a goalscorer when he transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid and even more so when he moved to Juventus. Messi, on the other hand, has had to deal with a bad defence in the last 5+ years so he’s been more of a playmaker. Messi is better in literally everything else other than goals like assists, dribbles, passes, through balls, and ball control, and the best of all, style, so unless you’re a casual fan who only looks at goals, statistics, and highlights, you have to admit that Messi pretty much rekts Cristiano, even in what he’s good at! This is not counting individual awards and trophies!

As someone who has been a Ronaldo fan for as long as I can remember, Messi is clear now, not just ahead of Ronaldo but Pele, Maradona and R9. BUT, to say that this was never a debate is arrogant af. I watched them both for around 10 years in their prime. There is definetly a debate considering how much they won (both individually and as a team). You have to remember Ronaldo had an uphill battle when he arrived at Madrid. He had to take down possibly the greatest team ever. So when he did people put him in the GOAT discussion. Messi's recent achivement with Argentina shows he is successful outside the Barcelona system. Personally i would give it to Messi but people thinking Ronaldo isn't in the discussion are clearly bias or didn't watch them on a WEEKLY basis (even though they claim otherwise).

I am 35 yo and because I have never seen Pele or Maradona I wont never speak about them and I find it stupid when people never saw them appart from the 2 or 3 videos that all of us have seen but still speak about them like if they were football wises. “More complete player”. How is this ever used in favour of Ronaldo? We’re talking about a player who is a lethal goalscorer (Ronaldo) vs a player who is a lethal goalscorer and a playmaker (Messi). Surely the latter is therefore the more complete player.

I'm old enough to remember Mexico 86 and Maradona and never thought I'd see anyone better than him but Messi is just on another level. He's not just the greatest of all time he's the greatest of all time by a distance

Ronaldo is more complete striker. Left foot , right foot, long range shoot, free kick , header, penalties and etc. Messi is more complete footballer, he has more impact to the game , he could do very creative passing & assist , he can dribble, he can scores in freekick , and he is very dangerous when he is one on one to the defenders. He can play any position in the field. Both are great and different type of player.

Always been Messi.

Why is comparing them such a big deal? Their play style is so different and they’re both goats and we’re privileged to get to watch them play all these years why can’t we just appreciate their abilities

because its unfair to bring messi's level down to ronaldos messi is 2 players in one, ronaldo is an elite goal scorer its like me saying zlatan was just as good as lewa, both were elite but lewa has hit special heights that zlatan didn't (European golden boot/BDO nomination etc) same goes for messi v ronaldo, there are way more things ronaldo has not done and cannot do than the other way around

Because that would mean putting Federer in the same category as Murray or Steph Curry in the same bracket as Jordan. 2 very good players but a level below the G.O.A.T players

I've always been quite surprised at the comparison. They can only be compared in stats. In pure footballing ability it's not even close.

The way the English and Madrid media have sold this as a debate is something to really be studied. Anyone that actually understands this game knows Messi's always been above. Preferences doesn't define who is the better player. Cristiano's an incredible athlete that's worked incredibly hard for his achievements and that's commendable. Messi was born to play football and play it at a level we've never seen. Accepting that is no shame...

If you watch Messi at 10-years-old, 20-years-old and 30-years-old, you are essentially watching the same player. And that’s because his abilities are God-given and no one has ever really had an answer for them. If you watch Ronaldo’s debut for Man Utd and then watch him at Real Madrid in 2014-15, you’re looking at two completely different players. I think Messi’s career has simply matched his natural ability, whereas, I think Ronaldo has had a career that has exceeded his natural ability. The best analogy I can think of is Federer vs Nadal, and it will always come down to personal preference.

Messi will always be my goat. Ronaldo is amazing, one of the greatest. But I cannot relate to him just like most of the world can’t. He’s 6 foot 1 and a physical specimen. Messi is the hope and dream of everyone. Being 5 foot 7 and looking like a normal man. Anyone can relate to him. Me being a small Mexican kid gives me hope seeing Messi. He’s done the most with least. He had a ghost to chase in Diego Maradona. All the pressure in the world with club and country and has still been the most consistent goal scorer, passer, and all round winner and leader. Not only the greatest footballer of all time, but greatest sports athlete and winner.

The GOAT debate is never on these channels when things go Ronaldo's way and/or going badly for Messi

Messi is a better goal scorer. Messi is a better creator. Messi is a better progressive passer. Messi is a better progressive ball carrier. The fact that this is even still a debate is ridiculous.

Goals and popularity is what kept cris in the chat it’s never been close especially when ronaldo changed his game to goal hunting Cus he knew deep down he could not compete

Can we please just respect both? Both are once in a lifetime footballers and are genuine freaks of nature. Both can score amazing goals, both can run through teams, and both can change a game in an instant.

we can do that while also recognizing messi is the greater of the 2 the idea that most people who pick messi means we disregard ronaldo is childish, no one is seriously saying that, we are just saying one is 2 players in 1 while the other is an elite goal scorer

There was ever a debate in the first place. Messi is and always has been miles clear. The only thing you can compare them both with is their goal scoring, but even Messi is better there. The better footballer has always been Messi. Anyone who watches and understands football knows that. Nevertheless, it has been an incredible rivalry between the two of them for 2 decades. And we will never see anything like that ever again 🐐

Messi has a better goal to game ratio. The guy in Green doesn’t know much to be honest
