And fun fact, Italy has never even tied, let alone beat Argentina in the last 33 years; it's plausible that Riquelme, Tévez and Crespo could have knocked out Italy.

That's a good representation of Messi and Ronaldo. Messi is both one of the best finishers, AND one of the greatest captain of the offense in terms of assisting others. Both Ronaldo and Messi had two of the top teams in football around them during their entire club careers until lately. I also must say that Messi is possibly the best dribbler the world has ever seen, going through several opponents like it was nothing, in his prime, sometimes 4 and 5 defenders at the same time!

I strongly disagree. Messi in his fifth best season was a better player than CR7 in his best season and there is a consens among coaches that Messi is the best of his generation. You had enough Barca players that grew up playing together, they understood the system they were playing and that created a great team. Both great players. Ronaldo does incredible things like scoring, aerial assault, acrobatic kicks, positioning for a finish etc. We've seen these feats from the likes of Eto, Shevchenko, Henry, R9, Van Basten, etc. The things Messi does are all of the above (minus headers and much athleticism), plus he does things you have rarely seen b4 on a regular basis. thats not opinion, thats a fact. there are video how mourinho stop messi when hes coaching inter. obi also explain that stopping messi and barca incredibly difficult. theyre all involving multiple players to stop messi since 1v1 him almost guarantee lose and he will solo your defese, if commiting too many players messi could spot his teammate and deliver killer pass. ronaldo is different, just assign world class defender to deal with him and you got good chances to stop ronaldo or at least stall him enough to reorganize defense. ashley cole is the most successful, dani alves does very good and puyol did decent dueling with ronaldo. ferguson did this to messi using park ji sung. messi walk over him almost whole match.

@@user-zq7vi8lm4z First off, that early Barcelona team is considered one of the best teams in the history of the sport. So you really can't say it was Messi vs Ronaldo. It was Barcelona vs a Real Madrid team that at that time was not so great, but Ronaldo still managed to find the back of the net a decent amount of times. And I find it funny how you say just assign a World Class defender to deal with Ronaldo. First off, how many world class defenders are there, I guess not many because Ronaldo has scored an unbelievable amount of goals. Also if Messi is so unstoppable how come he usually did most of his damage in the group stages of the Champions league when they are facing lesser competition. Even the world cup 2014 he did nothing after the group stage but ONE assist, and this is when he was in his prime.

Definitely i would say cr7 is better in ucl because of his legacy, but overall bigger big game player is messi. He has the most goals in finals, insane record against english top 6 without playing in the prem, only player to get 10/10 rating in a ucl final, scored in each knock out stage of the WC plus a brace in the final at 35, most goals in a single champions league game, more goals that ronaldo in major international tournaments, most goals against the greatest club off all time, i can go on forever. While i list these I do not want to undermine cr7, hes insane and the best in many aspects, but in big games and being the GOAT of the sport, he is 2nd to messi. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Ronaldo lives for the big game, and has come through many times in big games. Also player ratings is subjective and dont' mean sh*t to me. Just like he won the best player award in 2014 world cup and didn't deserve it. He scored all his goals in the group stage and only had one assist after. Yet Argentina reached the finals, but lost to Germany. When Maradona was asked how could this be, he shrugged it off and said he got the award because of marketing.

Messi always had more option due to his ability to get past defender + finish by himself and world class playmaking. Foul him in dangerous area isnt good either since hes fk master. There actually lots of world class defender back in the day. Almost every major club got some of them. The only thing Ronaldo matched with Messi was with his stats. Rest when it comes to gameplay Messi was always ahead. Messi 🐐

After a lot of thinking I've come to the final opinion that it's best to appreciate these two. Both of them share common traits that made them serial winners and record-breakers. But they implement it differently, Messi does it through visionary playmaking, whereas Cristiano does it through explosive goalscoring. Both of them have their weaknesses due to their physiques, Messi can't score headers the way Cristiano does and Cristiano can't dribble the way Messi does. I'm sure a similar conclusion can be reached when talking about their mentalities. At the end of the day, the two of them needed each other because they would've ended up being another Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale, which is still amazing but never in the GOAT conversation. It's going to be a sad day for World Football when these two hang their boots.

So why has your idol failed outside of Barcelona ? Especially when he joined PSG when he had that disastrous first season with 6 goals in all competitions? Ronaldo has succeeded in other teams and in the Premier League (the toughest league in the world) while Messi failed outside of Barcelona at club level. That is definitely not a goat by any means.

Messi in his fifth best season (10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 14/15, 18/19) was a better player than CR7 in his best season and there is a consens among coaches that Messi is the best of his generation - that says it all. I have always known that Messi is the better player and so shall it be, but remember that Ronaldo came to a new team and you wouldn't expect him to immediately fit in and compete with Messi who grew up within his team. Ronaldo is a hard worker, a competitor and a role model, if you need inspiration even beyond football, look to Ronaldo. Messi is Goat but CR7 deserves respect for challenging him.

That Real Madrid team in the early years was not a good "team". If Ronaldo played on that Barca team they DEFINITELY would have won just the same. Ronaldo has proved throughout his career that he can adapt to different clubs and systems. That Barca team with him would still be unstoppable, he would not be a player to slow them down, he would enhance them.

There has been a debate raging among fans and pundits over who's the better player between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but in my opinion as fans we should be privileged that we witnessed 2 generational talents go head to head and have very interesting battles score loads of goals get lots of assists and produce jaw dropping moments time and time again that left many of us shocked and we enjoyed every moment of them and yes we can debate on who's better which we've been doing that for years, as least as fans we saw 2 ridiculous players for 15+ years and even at their age they remain class. I think in terms of ability skill and intelligence Messi has the edge as he's the better player. Messi is a prolific goalscorer as a player he's better at creating, passing, dribbling, his football IQ and understanding of the game, not to mention that he's also the most decorated player in football history with the cherry on top which is the World Cup. This was the same Lionel Messi who scored 91 goals in a calendar year which is an unbreakable record, while also being an elite level playmaker and it's rare that you see players who are consistent goalscorers and playmakers showing that his impact as a player is beyond goals and offensively with the ball at his feet, he can do everything score create produce something out of nothing etc. Even though he scored 91 goals in a calendar, there's an argument that Ronaldo edges him in terms of goalscoring and he is faster and more athletic than Messi. The things that Cristiano Ronaldo can do, Lionel Messi can't do, Ronaldo is a pure finisher and as he's evolved in his career he's become more complete as his heading his jumping accuracy and positioning is spot on and he was able to cause problems with his off ball movement. Both of them have different profiles and were efficient regardless and if I want a goalscorer on my team, then it's Cristiano Ronaldo because he is the best goalscorer ever, from a footballing perspective if I want the complete package which is goals assists and creativity then it's Lionel Messi. At the end of the day, they're a level above every player in world football and I don't think we'll ever see players like Messi and Ronaldo again.

I agree with much of what you have said, but in Ronaldo's favor I would add one more thing and that is the mentality factor. I remember I believe it was 2015 a player from the Portugal national team was asked how was it to play with Ronaldo. Paraphrasing he said; Its great before a big game in the tunnel I was nervous, but when I looked across to the opposing team, and saw that they were looking at Ronaldo. and they looked nervous. Ronaldo exuded confidence, upon seeing the oponents reaction to him I became calm. This is one of the factors that many don't consider on how Ronaldo's mentality lifts his teammates. He welcomes pressure, that many try to avoid.

They were seriously on 2 iconic clubs going at it in the same league and every time Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo went up against each other the moments each of them produced were absolutely ridiculous and you wonder how they managed to do it. The biggest rivalry in Spanish football is El Classico and every time Messi and Ronaldo went up against each other for Barcelona and Real Madrid, they played against each other in La Liga Champions League Spanish Super Cup Copa Del Rey they literally played against each other almost 3-4 times a season depending on how far their teams got in the champions league. Head to head it was always an interesting battle between 2 of football's biggest superstars and the games always lived up to the hype and the moments they had when they played each other you wonder how they even did it. When they were playing in La Liga, every season they motivated each other to get better and El Classico was always a thriller and in terms of wins goals and assists, Lionel Messi had the edge over Cristiano Ronaldo and in career as well.

That's a beautiful view point. But I think you're trying to keep it more respectable. In my view tho, there has never been any debate between the two; from 2007-08 CR7 was the best in the world - no debate. Also, from 2009-2019 with the possible exception of 2014, Messi was the best in the world - no debate again. Football in my view should be based on performances first. Then stats can follow suite. I saw some stats recently that came as no surprise to me that since 2009 Messi has gotten more than 300 motm performances in contrast to CR7's 100 plus nearly 200 motm and since 2009 Messi has also had a 10/10 perfect rating about 118 times in contrast to 38 from CR7. I know these are subjective but they're not far from the reality at all. But Ronaldo makes up for this gulf in class between them by stat-padding and having people look at football from that perspective alone. In terms of numbers, yes there was and is a debate perhaps which I still think Messi edges. But in terms of performances, eye test, records, iconic moments, consistency and achievements all in one CR7 really doesn't come close and this had nothing to do with Messi winning the world cup. Just for the doubters who were searching a means to downgrade Messi internationally the Copa 2021 win was what effectively ended any such debate from their camps. I find it kind of embarassing for Messi to say he needed a world cup to edge CR7. He needed the world cup mainly for Pele and Maradona arguments and to further shut the mouths of haters and CR7 delusionals but not to "edge" CR7. Messi has greater performances at league level, international level, domestic level and surprisingly to some even in the UCL...but CR7 has greater numbers in UCL, hence his title as Mr. Champions league, but not greater performances than Messi. There's no debate and has NEVER been between Messi and Ronaldo to those interested in football!!!

Ronaldo performance is mostly based on his teammates performance and Messi is independent cos he can dribble, create space and chances and also score...But Ronaldo most times only scores... Its easier for Messi to playmake because 1st of all, he started at a strong club, Barca, with Suarez, Neymar, Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi, Ronaldinho sand many more. He had it pretty easy for him. Ronaldo had to go from Sporting Lisbon tongetbto where he is. 2nd of all, Ronaldo can only score goals, yeas, but Ronaldo is just more of an attacker. His job is to score goals. Especially since he doesnt have many teammates who shoot and finish as good as him to assist. They are pretty equal.

And why did he started off in sporting? Because he was trash as a youngster, and Messi was a champion from the get go, easier for him to playmake? He made david villa look like an Elite Striker. And from that logic Messi still had better stats, goals and assists post 2015 when he had none of them, and Ronaldo didn't after having the strongest Real Madrid side. Messi is better, period.

In his 1st professional year in sporting he had already proved himself to go to Man U in the PL one of the hardest leagues to play in. After that he had to prove Man U he was the best in the squad and he did that won champions league and ballon d'or all that in England while Messy just chilling and relaxing at Barcelona. Finally he went to Real Madrid again with new teammates new tactics and still proved himself there to be the best.
