Werster's "How To Beat Pokemon Stadium Using Only Rentals!" serves as some good supplementary material to this. It's a quick guide on how to beat the game quickly. It will only take 30 something hours initially, if you go fast. And if you want to speedrun it, you can't stop to sleep or take care of other biological needs. Not a big deal, though, just abandon your mortality and ascend to godhood. No big deal.

unironically i like the way hyper beam works in rby more than i do in modern games. it provides an interesting bit of risk vs reward, especially in multiplayer. unfortunately the "intended" way hyper beam works is basically giving your opponent a free turn with little to no benefit to you

I played PS1 and 2 SO MUCH when they originally came out. They were my absolute favorite games for a while. Very disappointing that only rentals are available on the switch, but it was fun watching you play it! Luckily, I found a way to get around using rentals on my PC 👹

just a minor correction, submission isn't the highest base power fighting move in gen 1. the jump kick moves are more powerful, and due to bugged recoil damage they have effectively no downside. the issue is that they're on hitmonlee, which crumples to anything with a special move. seismic toss, counter, low kick, and double kick are all examples of decent to good fighting moves, it's just that they all either don't deal conventional damage or are only on bad pokemon

Not be a stickler to a stickler, but by virtue of availability, i would say submission is the strongest gen 1 fighting type move that applies fighting type damage. Why didn't primeape get jump kick, as a acrobatic unhinged monkè it tracks it would jump and kick lol

Wild how Aerodactyl has a custom animation for Earthquake in Pokemon Stadium 1, even though it doesn't learn the move until Gen 2.

​@@musicstuff6310Beyond tradebacks, Mimic is a TM that almost any Pokemon can learn and lets them use any move fairly easily. A bunch of Pokemon have nearly unused animations because of this, although EQ Aerodactyl is one of the easiest to see.

Finally, a game where Jynx wins out, truly her time to shine after being denied a lousy 4th gen evolution alongside Magmotor and Electrivire. Isn't it neat how many Fire, Ice, Electric trios there are in Pokemon?! Actually...I think that stopped with gen 5's cover legendaries.

I had no idea pokemon stadium looked that good, the graphics still hold up to me and the animations are infinately better then the recent games. Just wish the rentals had actual movesets. I hope Game freak will make another stadium but I doubt it, it wouldn't make as much money as gen 12 or pokemon home premium subscription plus.

Battle Revolution for the wii looks even better! Sort of...moving to attack the enemy looks kinda lame

To be honest, watching the streams and seeing you have fun with pokemon like AAHHNNIIXX and Electrode was... pleasent, glad you enjoyed stadium. Also seeing Skawo and Karma Von Plague in the chat was a nice surprise as well.

Because sleep can last 0 turns, in stadium it's beneficial to be slower when using sleep as you get at least one free turn. Wrap can be used as a pivot move as it allows you to switch without the opponent attacking you - but your opponent can also do the same if they switch while you wrap. Normal is the best type in gen1 cartridge - stab on body slam and hyper beam, immunity to body slam paralysis, usually great coverage, the fighting type sucks so counters weren't common.

After beating the game with just rental mons. Watching vids like these are so satisfying. Btw, the Parasect rental is surprisingly useful in Gym Leader Castle! You can abuse slow spores to get free turns of Growth and restore HP with powered up Mega Drains. Making it some type of mini-wall. It even has Dig to hit mons with weaker defenses! It’s a bit of a high skill gap though but the payoff is worth it. Although you have to adjust to a bit of a slow playstyle. Eitherway it works when the matchups are just right.

I really enjoyed this video! Gen 1 has a ton of really interesting jank compared to modern Pokémon, so being able to abuse it in an odd context like this is pretty enjoyable! You were right on almost everything, but you made an error regarding crits in gen 1. Not only is the chance you get them inconsistent, being dependent on your base speed, the damage they deal is also inconsistent, only this time being dependent on your level! When landing a crit, a Pokémon's level in the damage formula is doubled. The Level multiplier of the damage formula is (2*level*crit/5)+2, where crit is a 1 if you don't get a crit, and a 2 if you do. This results in you dealing just below 2x damage at higher levels, and significantly below 2x damage at lower levels. (some numbers for scale: 95% more at level 100, 90% more at level 50, 80% more at level 20, 50% more at level 5. Funnily enough, a level 1 Pokémon would deal no additional damage on a crit due to the way rounding works in the older games! Obviously you can't obtain a level 1 Pokémon without glitches, but it's still worth noting. Technically you also missed that crit rates in colosseum are a bit different than they are in the gen 1 carts: numbers were adjusted slightly so that slow Pokémon will crit slightly more often than before, and fast Pokémon will crit less often, with the equalizing point being at base 76 speed when the attacker isn't affected by focus energy. This change also means the minimum base speed needed to crit at the maximum odds with a high-crit move is lower, at 52 base speed instead of 64. I've really been enjoying your videos! I've watched a bunch of em' multiple times, since you do a great job at keeping things entertaining and engaging even through multiple watches. Now I just need to get into fire emblem so I can start enjoying those videos too, since as of right now I don't think I'd enjoy them without fully understanding fire emblem's mechanics and systems.

10:40 I think it's because of this system that fires are immune to burn and ices are immune to freeze as to my knowledge there are no off type moves that apply those status's (Tri Attack had no secondary effect in Gen 1) This leads me to think that it's intentional as it may just have been easier to implement than making each type have its own unique properties.

I'd imagine with the very limited memory space they were working with, it was easier to just tack on a check during the damage calculation routine that says something like, "if attacking_type = defending_type then skip secondary_effect subroutine". I reckon you're right.

Final Hours...

On my original cartridge all it took for mewtwo from rentals was an electrode and a dewgong. Dewgong never missed horn drill after mewtwo was paralyzed. Awesome review! Never could round 2 without my own pokemon.

Anyway, these are more interesting to me than the main games these days. I'm old and too aware of my mortality, so I don't have patience for baby games, and just want challenging battles. Not getting that out of the main series, that's for sure, from those you just get many hours of pressing A, mostly to skip unskippable cutscenes. But from Stadium, sure, it is possible to acquire fun from that. I should play that more. If anything just to use Seaking, because I have never once used that. In fact, as far as I know, you are the first human to ever use it in the history of the world. Kind of a shame that the main series never got battles that make strategies like that necessary. Or that they didn't just keep making Stadium games and making them well.

I have to be honest, I think the latter parts of Scarlet and Violet, especially the final DLC, did a pretty damn good job at providing challenging battles for the player to face. I definitely think the Stadium games are interesting, but better than modern ones...? Definitely not. Sure, they're more challenging... but in all the wrong ways, since esp Stadium 1 operates on busted mechanics, and you're probably gonna be totally hamstrung by the rental system. It's challenging because the options given to you are mostly just really bad, and imo that's a pretty bad way of balancing a game like this

That… was a beautiful trailer. Definitely going to win awards with that!

You should really play the Prince of Persia trilogy of Sands of Time, Warrior Within and Two Thrones! The gameplay is very fun (peaks in the second in my opinion), and it's overall probably one of the most coherent and well-executed closed, finished trilogies we got in gaming (not Xenoblade levels, but then what actually is). Very nice and finished story, very fun to play! Ah, the times when Ubisoft still... well, did things. _Sigh..._

the rental market was not kind to aerodactyl! i always played with pokemon from cartridges as a kid so i never realized how bad the rental model is. the poor fossil! nice job on the editing and graphics. the charts and silhouettes of the pokemon you were talking about looked great. it is a shame that when porting this game to the switch they didnt add the ability to pull from pokemon box or home or whatever its called now. ...or revive the good old transfer pack haha.

Of course I've seen krabby's stats, I've beaten Pokemon Blue with only Krabby. It's amazing. The physical attack only 5 points below mewtwo's is amazing. Crabhammer also is a boosted crit rate move, though krabby has low enough speed that it's only like 80% crit instead of guaranteed. Still a good move though. Well, it is coming from krabby's pathetic special but it works for rock or ghost types.

@@ImportedCheese Hidden lore, its actually Joevani in the castle, the real leader of team rocket is doing the announcing watching over you and you are actually doing training for mewtwo before the first movie. Which is why the final boss of the game is mewtwo and why his son is the final boss of stadium 2.

God if only hal made the Pokémon games though. They'd actually be kind of hard, and have good, character filled animations

True!! Immense jump in quality!

With Tauros for the Poke cup specifically you're forgetting that Double edge doesn't deal backlash in this game if it finishes an opponent off. Charizard can be useful specifically as a safe switch into Razor Leaf. (This isn't common, but it does happen) Nerfed sleep? If you're faster than the opponent you can very safely stunlock them to death (Jynx can beat that Mew this way). With Chansey you should at least consider how it would fare against Mewtwo since Seismic toss would be a 4 hit win on its HP. You're overhyping wrap in this game since switching cancels it.

I've only played Battle Revolution and it's my favorite spin-off game. Does it hold up as well as the Stadium games seem to? I'm interested in trying them out

Unfortunately I'd say no... Aside from the Honchkrow fainting animation, which is the greatest animation in the franchise, the game is suuuuuper barebones and the rental pass system is god awful

Battle revolution is just ok sadly. While it's similar to stadium, the different modes aren't like how they work in Stadium. Stadium's modes are different restrictions that require you to use different team compositions and are surprisingly well thought-out for the time, and feel like actual competitive formats. Battle Revolution's game modes are very gimmicky by comparison and involve things like "you randomly swap some of your pokemon with your opponents based on roulette results" and "this battlefield is foggy and no where are we going to tell you this lowers the accuracy of attacks". BR has some surprisingly good music though!

10:04 So that is interesting because it is not actually strictly true. You see, Gen 1 (definitely cartridge, and I am almost certain Stadium also does) has a distinction between primary status moves and secondary status moves. Primary status moves always work; secondary status moves never work on pokemon of their type. This works for freeze and burn because there is no primary burn or freeze move, means that poison types can be poisoned by exactly Twineedle because Toxic is hardcoded to not work on Poison types or something (Gen 1 Jank) and breaks apart with paralysis because it means Electric types are inmune to thunderbolt and thunder paralysis, Ghost types cannot be paralyzed by Lick and Normal types, to meta defining consecuences, cannot be paralyzed with Body Slam, but Thunder Wave uses the regular type inmunity check and so ground types, but not electrics, are inmune

I only object to you saying gen 2 is closer to gen 9 than gen 1 because I think its pretty clear the dividing line is gen 3. 2 is still really close to 1 because so much of the underlying code is the same. Like, Special Def was introduced in gen 2, but it still shares it's underlying DV with Special Atk because it being a single Special stat wasn't something they couldn't change. Gen 3 is when a lot of things that I associate with modern pokemon got introduced, especially abilities. Gen 3 is closer to gen 9 than gen 1; that I'd agree with. Honestly, the point is still solid even if I'd move the line just a bit. I just wanted to talk about this because you brought it to mind.

The backgrounds in this game do look bad…. But they would surely make better graphics in a 2023 game on a console that has proven to work with big open worlds…. Oh this series doesn’t evolve?
