PIAT Bits

Ғылым және технология

Just parts that belong to the PIAT that no one talks about much. Put them all in the video to let people see what they are.

Great to see these parts, most examples in museum collections don't have them so people generally have no clue how it worked!

That is part of the reason I appreciate collectors even though often they make me jealous when I see their toys. I have learned more from collectors in terms of military hardware than I have learned from museums. Not the fault of the museums, but they have to think about the general public. Collectors have a passion for their collection and will try to tell everything about it to anyone willing to listen.

Glad you appreciate the videos. I'm not cool though. I just buy interesting trinkets and like to try to document it for others to find info on it when they need it. I have a few short show and tell videos to put up along with video on a new to me fuze once I make the pull pin for it. Since I dont think it exists on KZread yet I'm sort of happy that I get to document it in video. Wish I had the mine it went into though.

These were airdropped to resistance fighters from time to time. Since they were essentially spigot mortars with a recoil system they were used as mortars sometimes by the fighters against Axis troops. I guess they had a pretty good range for a mortar firing a comparable sized bomb. I do not have a reference though.

They were set up for about 320 yards. Although good against buildings being shaped charges they made rather bad mortar bombs and the 2 inch projectiles tended to be more useful. I have documents where they talk about tests with different ammo for the indirect fire role and have pictures of modified 2 inch mortar rounds that were made to test on the piat. The no.425 fuze was also horrible for indirect fire and had a lot of failures. Once the 426 came out it fixed that issue. Due to the spring "wear" they also seem to have disliked allowing it to be used for indirect fire.
