In this video, I walk through my method of capturing and processing a photograph of the Milky Way from the window of an airplane. Processing is performed in Adobe Lightroom, After Effects, and Photoshop.

Some next level shit right here. Love the creativity of the overall idea and the knowledge of these programs to make it all work perfectly. Well done dude.
Your videos are fantastic. So well produced and entertaining. Loved following your trip on instagram! Thank you for showing us all how to shoot the milkyway, its been such a favorite thing for me to shoot now!
Crazy! Such a cool technique. Thanks for sharing.
Just amazing
really creative use of after effects for this!!
Brilliant use of after effects to align all the shots!!
Amazing, keep up the great work!
Really awesome!
Duuuuude that was sooo cool now im waiting for A7s iii ... And plz make more videos. Peace from Iran
You are my idol!
wow really great and informative video .. can I do milky way alignment without Adobe after effect.. I mean is it possible to use starstax or deepsky stacker or even PS to align milky way?
Ian you're so cool! ha-ha love your videos man! you've inspired me in so many ways!
Bro. You rock.
Amazing
Cool video! Keep up the great work. Lovely greetings from Vienna.
OMG ! You are an absolute master ! Hope i will get there too! Thanks a lot for the video and I already subscribed!
Excellent - Thank you !!!
That was way cool!
learned something today! thank you!
Hi Ian, amazing photos and videos, absolutely brilliant! Thanks a bunch for sharing the knowledge. I had a question for you. In another video about stacking to reduce the noise, you recommend the use of Median stacking mode, while here you suggest the mean stacking mode. Can you shed light on when to prefer which?
amazing !!!!!!
Great tutorial!
Great video, thank you! By the way, welcome to Hungary! What a surprise! :-) I hope you have some nice days here!
very cool!
Ian, thanks for the great tutorial! I was wondering, do you know if there's any software besides After Effects that can do things like this? (e.g. blackmagic fusion? I'm new to these programs and don't have just the photographer CC subscription)
Great tutorial! Do you think 50mm on and apsc sensor would be too long for this? What focal lengths would you recommend?
Hi, i really liked the video. im having 17mm 1.8 oly which is great. yet ive been thinking about wider 12-32mm panasonic one, for wider shot. but since it doesnt have manual focus option, how should i focus at night? thanks!

talking about pitchblack night!
Nice!
ingenious
Could you mask out the blurred earth to keep the sharp city light details as well? While you lose the feeling of flying on the airplane, it takes out some of the hectic busy nature that the "long exposure" gives
if you have a good suction mount, that should help, right?
Impressive
Welcome to Hungary! While you are here I recommend that you check out the "PARK OF STARS IN ZSELIC" that is one of the least light polluted places in europe(It shoulld be better than an airplane).
Came here from dpreview, really nice! I'm using some stacking as well, not at your high level though and only with stationary cameras ;) I do notice in 19:44 for example some stuttering in the streaks of the clouds. I guess this is due to the "blackout" time of the camera, between the end of one exposure and the start of the next? It is very impressive though how small of a problem that is, as the exposure times are rather short and hence the relative effect of blackout time should be rather large - the A7s must have a really short blackout time!
RAM suction cup mount for the camera: www.amazon.com/RAM-B-166-202AU-Ram-Mount-Universal-4-Inch-20/dp/B003ASPH48/ Lens skirt for glare: www.amazon.com/Lenskirt-Larger-Anti-Reflection-Portable-Flexible/dp/B018WNFLH8 you could take 30s exposures no problem (during times of no turbulence). I've used the ram mount to an airplane window for timelapse and it holds a midsize DSLR no problem. I guess I need to try booking more red-eye flights!
how on earth did you coordinate which flight to choose/where to sit? also, you seemed to have chosen a night with very clear skies.
best place to sit on the airplane? in front, on, or behind wing?
Hey Ian ! Do you think it's possible to stabilize the camera with a tripod or bag of rice ? And is it autorized ? I take a flight for the first time in one month and I have to try this technic ! ^^

Hey, im trying to take a picture of the Milky Way, on the locator, it’s near my home, how do i take a pic of it from my window, and do i have to open the window? Also, im using an iphone with manual camera apps.
Thanks for a great tutorial mate ! But if you allow me I'd like to point something : as soon as you export your sequence into JPEGs you drastically reduce the quality and information of your files, so you should at least export to a PNG sequence, or if your computer can handle it, as a TIFF sequence. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if you chose to export to JPEG at the end of the process, but since you use Photoshop and Lightroom again afterwards, you know...
Top Movie
Hi Ian, probably wrong place to ask, is there a chance you could review the Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG for Milky Way photography?:0)
Any other way/program without using after effects/youtube? cause I don't own after effects Something to try when I have the chance

Maybe try to use DaVinci Fusion 8 or DaVinci Resolve 12.5. It has free version and tracking and stabilizing tools included ;)
Whats the difference between a mean and median filter? (You used a median filter in your other video)
@wandererstraining
8 жыл бұрын
Mean is the average of the values for a given pixel of each image, while median is picking the pixel value that comes up the most within a bunch of images. So if you have a bunch of images and one had something obstructing parts of the image, that obstruction would influence the result of the mean, but not the result of the median as it would be filtered out.

***** Very smart to use mean instead of median, in your case. I don't think I would've thought of it. Or I would've come up with something more complicated, like using median to reduce noise and then layer the lights with brighten only since bright parts of images are usually less noisy looking.
awesome!! can you try taking picture from galaxy s7 edge? it has an awesome camera!! please

Odd, usually they don't take that long to release the update for compatibility. My friend is using his a6300 on LR cc just fine.

Whenever I leave my camera outside at night to time-lapse the lens always ends up with condensation on it. Do you know what I could do to prevent this?

a Metikon f0.95 works well for this.
I just have one question? Were these photos takens hand held? or some form of a suction cupped support to the air planes window?
@XSquibX

that's nuts.

What lens did you use? You said you opened up to 1.8, so that rules out the Rokinon 14mm F2.8. Were you using the 24mm 1.4 or do you have a new favorite lens? :P

3:30 Can someone help me how to do this? I don't really understand it and need it dumbing down 😔😂😂 Thanks
You do realize that you basically just turned this 2 hour flight into a 6 hour post-processing job.
D:
Cool technique! Although, as a non-destructive Photoshop purist this video makes me cringe…
Wow man! Are you still in Hungary? Don't you want a meet and greet? :)
