    Great video man, really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I did have a question regarding the foreground exposure. Perhaps i missed it, but why the 7 min exposure with the ND filter as opposed to a shorter one without the ND? Was it to give you a smoothed out sky to make the masking and blending easier? Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hey man, so I have gotten that question quite a lot, and I am actually not using an ND filter, I am just using photopills to calculate a longer exposure but to do that in an exposure calculator, and wanting to make a brighter foreground you "trick" the calculator into thinking youre stopping down by 1 or two stops, so If I want my foreground 1 to 2 stops brighter than in the sky exposures I would calculate that in to get an equivalent exposure. Hope that makes sense!

    When taking long exposures for foreground (like your 7 minute exposure for foreground) how important do you think it is to use the ND filter? (and did you chose to do this because of the white snow?) Would you say it's generally useful to use an ND filter for most night scape foregrounds? I am trying to work on improving my foregrounds.... Thanks!

    Thanks for the video. The technique is incredible. Why did you shoot 13 frames? Was there some sort of calculation that went into that? I'm just wondering how many images I should take in the field to try this for myself. And I assumed the only difference between each shot was the time it was shot, correct? A little more detail on your setup for this would be very helpful. Thanks again.

    I would think by shooting 10 seconds you can get a really sharp image. At 30 seconds exposure, you will start to get some trails, even if you use the 500 rule at 14mm. Then, he ups the iso to get the right exposure and since he's shooting lots of images, that will eliminate the noise. I think 10 shots is just arbitrary. The more you take, the better the noise control can be?

  • @JSnowPhotography

    PsytastikTunes you're right, actually as I've refined this technique I find that 8 frames at ISO10000, f/2.8. Ten seconds stacked is cleaner or as clean as 10,13, or even 20 frames

    Nice video ! Can you explain the camera settings? 14mm 10 sec exp ISO 10k? With a 14mm lens you can easy push 20-30 sec exp without getting star trails. 500 rule / focal length = exp time Maybe ISO 1600-3200 30 sec exp?

  • @PsytastikTunes

    @PsytastikTunes

    7 жыл бұрын

    I think he did it to just get his stars as sharp as possible and since this process is all about removing noise, the iso could be pushed to get the equivalent of a 30 sec @ iso 3200. Even at 30 secs you start to see trails, especially at the edges (coma) with a 14mm. I'm gonna try this technique next time I'm out .

    Eddie Ed sure if I wanted to shoot a single exposure and deal with the noise. I can eliminate noise in an ISO 10k image as easily as a 3400iso image. Ten seconds eliminates any trailing whatsoever which is the goal because I like to print HUGE

    In fact, the 500 rule on my d810 sensor is completely wrong. I see star trailing at exposures at 18 seconds. This is due to the sensors pixel density. I use the rule of 250. Therefor I need to ramp the ISO in order to get perfectly sharp stars.

    Duo you think is it possible to do three 10 sec pics and stack them instead of one 30sec and make fluent Timelapse this way? The noise is a real problem for me, and I can't get satisfying ressulsts nor with my 5dMk2 nor A7s and now with my new a7r2 the same...the noise with ISO 3200 is killing me. I do not see any difference between a7s2 and a7r2. I would say that 5Dmk2 is best from that three.

    You want to update your Camera Raw, and if LR asks you if you want to "Open Anyway" or "Render Using Lightroom" then render using lightroom. What that does is it creates a new .TIFF file from your edit that then opens in PS.

    If I'm stacking star photos, can I leave long exposure noise reduction on my camera off? On my camera long exposure noise reduction takes a second exposure every exposure I take to get ride of hot pixels. Is it necessary to have this on if I'm stacking anyways? Thanks!

    kevin you'll definitely want to have that off so that there is minimal time between frames. SLS will have a much harder time aligning if you don't. You can take a dark frame to add to your stack that will help with hot/deadpixels

    SiouLfr I’m doing neither of those things but demonstrating how to calculate an exposure got your foreground that is brighter than the sky exposures also this video is very dated

  • @SiouLfr

    @SiouLfr

    6 жыл бұрын

    Talking about your foreground 7 minutes exposure. If I understand you well, you used a 2 stops ND filter, to go from 10,000 ISO + 10 sec to 1200 ISO + 415 sec. The ND4 filter is useless as you could have done the same thing by dropping your ISO to 300, resulting in less noise and maybe vignetting added by the filter. (Light = incoming * shutter speed * ISO / (ND^2) )

  • @JSnowPhotography

    @JSnowPhotography

    6 жыл бұрын

    SiouLfr you COMPLETELY misunderstood the entire lesson of this tutorial. I DIDNT ACTUALLY USE AN ND...I used PhotoPills exposure calculator to calculate an exposure at iso 1200, but expose two stops brighter...the only way to do that in the exposure calculator is to tell it you’re using a two stop ND...I teach photography for a living, if never use an ND at night...ever, that’s just ridiculous. Maybe gander at my website to see my portfolio, and see the techniques in action.

  • @SiouLfr

    @SiouLfr

    6 жыл бұрын

    Wow, and you went to all this process to calculate that by decreasing your ISO 10 times, and addind two stops (leading to 2^2*10=40 times), you had to go from 10 secs to ~400 secs. All this mess to multiply 10 by 40 holy crap ! But sorry for misunderstanding the lesson dad, should be my bad of course. Anyway, if I found it highly unclear, I probably wasn't the only one. Peace !

    Why shoot 12 photos at 10 seconds consecutively, instead of processing 12 photos of the SAME time frame, 12 different ways? That way you have no star trails. Or am I on crack?

  • @JSnowPhotography

    @JSnowPhotography

    7 жыл бұрын

    You're in crack LOL, just kidding. The idea of stacking is based on the fact that noise is random. So by stacking multiple frames your averaging out the noise resulting in a more detailed, noiseless image. You aren't processing the files differently but the same collectively. You sync the edits you've made in acr or Lightroom across all the images you intend to stack and then export them to a third party software like starry landscape stacker which will align and compensate for the earths rotation between frames.
