How to Photograph the Milky Way in Really Heavy Light Pollution Using ETTR (Expose to the Right)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video will show you how I make photographs of the Milky Way in really heavy light pollution around cities like Los Angeles California. I use a method of exposure called ETTR (Expose To The Right). I'll show you why it's beneficial for astrophotography and also how I process these photos in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

@@userde9436 not a pro, but i think exposure to the right means you adjust your camera exposure (aperture, iso and shutter speed) to receive more lights so that when you view the unedited photo it seems overexposed and the histogram is more towards the highlight (right side of midline).
Ian, as a fellow teacher of night sky photography, I really appreciate your straight forward, easy to understand approach. I will be sending more students your way!
Probably the most informative and straight-to-the-point astro-photo tutorial I've seen. Thanks you for the ETTR tip!
Most epic intro to any tutorial ever, and an amazing tutorial to back it up. Thank you so much.
If I watched this video yesterday before I started my 1st Milky Way shooting, I would definitely get a better result!!! Keep up the work man! Really appreciate your work!
thanks a lot pal! by far the simplest yet most informative tutorial on astrphotography ive seen.
this is by far the most helpful tip i've got for ppl who live in the cities about astrophotography.. thumbs up and i'm subscribing. i like the way u present your videos. NICE!

Long story short, I was unhappy with my first attempt of the Milky (camping trip at Joshua National Park) and after reading this method on a PetaPixel post raced to local spot and nailed my first Milky shot, Thanks for sharing!
Love this video!!! One of the best videos about astrophotography I've watched
Just started astrophotography. It was amazing how much stars i got from the balcony. My city is red colored for light pollution. Didn't expect nikon d3300 and kit lens 18-55mm to work so well. Thank you so much!
That is just insane!!! Mind blowing post processing.
Wow... the video at the end is stunning. It's like sitting in a planetarium - a real one!
I've shared this with members of my camera club since I first found this video in 2015, and I keep sharing it. This is a profound method of recovering images otherwise lost to "normal" human activity that is blind to the beauty of dark skies.
Thank you. That video was so good, I have to rewatch it and take notes.
This is the exact video I need. Going about 40 minutes from the city tonight to shoot conet Neowise and wanted to minimize light pollution issues as much as possible.

@@bt10ant was actually able to get away from the light pollution and didn't need to expose to the right. Successfully got 30+ shots that turned out well!

A+ I can't wait to try this in the west suburbs of Chicago... As soon as it stop raining. Thanks and please keep posting!
I have always had a fascination with the night sky, since laying in our back yard in the Texas Panhandle and seeing the Milky Way. This video has given me the knowledge to try to capture sky images even in light polluted Dallas area. The results are beyond may expectations. I used the same lens and LIghtroom to post-process, and was amazed. Viewing will get better in late fall and winter when the humidity goes down. And then there are those trips to Colorado High Country... Thanks for a great vid!!
Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I have to try it!
In French : magnifique boulot de retouche ! Merci pour ces précieux conseils !

Great vid. This will help people for decades to come.
Awesome video man! Even though you obviously can't get super perfect astrophotography in light pollution, it's nice to know there are methods out there to get a decent photo from your back yard when you can't travel hours to a dark spot.
That's fascinating. Amazing video!
Mind blown 🤯🤯 this is amazing. New photographer here and this hyped me up even more. I was doing it all wrong. Gotta think out the box when it comes to photography 👏🏼👏🏼

I was soooo disappointed with my Galaxy Note 10s "superior" camera when I tried getting pictures of the 2022 full moon eclipse in a light polluted town! THIS explains it! Thanks! 😍
i applied this to one of my raw shots taken in my backyard, it wasn't over exposed to start out like it should have been for this, but applying and tweaking the rest of the setting made 5x more stars show up and even some gas clouds. Thanks for the tutorial. I hope i get a clear night tonight so i can try this properly.
wow stunning
Ian, thanks for the tips on using LR for the processing, especially on the Clarity and Vibrance sliders. I've used Clarity some but not Vibrance that much. Good tip! I'm going to try it on a series of images with comets I have and see what happens. Thanks.
Well - I would never have thought that. MAde me think again about how to approach this . Thanks
Awesome tutorial ***** !! Thank you so much for sharing!
