Well today was my first day and the big mistake a saw was that she used the c anchor method which is incorrect and she used 2 hands to put the protective cover on the needle when she was done. She could’ve poke herself it was made for one hand closure

Errors (for anyone wondering): She should not have said the patient's name at the start of the procedure. Her glove size is too large, which will make it difficult to palpate. The tourniquet should be 3-4 inches above the puncture site. She should have instructed the patient NOT to pump their fist. C hold anchoring is the old school way, but thumb anchoring is safer. Leads to less needlestick injuries. Order of draw should be Gold to Lav to prevent contamination of tube additives. She should have used her thumb to swiftly secure the needle and dropped it into the sharps container asap. Source: I'm a phlebotomist.

Here is another things that should happen. Some people like to have their hand held while blood is drawn. A friend or relative should always be allowed to be with the person. if that is not possible, then the phlebotomist should have someone available for this purpose. Just because someone is an adult doesn't mean they aren't scared.

@@samuellinares2001 phlebotomy jobs do not pay very well. So, if you are needing a job to be your primary income, I do not recommend doing phlebotomy for that. But, do not take my word for it, do your research for your area before jumping into it is what I would suggest. I have been a phlebotomist for 11 years and I love it, but I do have another source of income other than mine the one I have for phlebotomy. I wish you luck on your phlebotomy journey.

I got certified as a phlebotomist, and found a job within 3 months. It is pretty low pay compared to other healthcare jobs, but it is steady work you can do anywhere in the world. Also, if you go on to be a nurse, it looks good on a resume that you have experience working in healthcare drawing blood.

No, I live on the east coast in the US. Here we have a variety of technical schools that offer phlebotomy training. I am sure they have similar programs in the UK. Most courses are only 4-6 weeks.

depends on where you live. For example, I'm in el paso and I'm currently going to vista college. It's a 2.5 week course, so it's a lot of reading. Class is from 2-6:30. I dont know how it is for others, but for vista, you have to have some form of prior medical training/experience. I myself was in the army and NREMT/medic. Comming from experience, it is a lot of detailed info, especially the order of draw and the additives/tests that go with each tube. The course itself was 500 bucks, but it's more of a refresher course for me. Good luck!@

good video. The only problem I have with this is that the phlebotomist uses the "C" hold technique. This is where the thumb and forefinger straddle the needle entry point, with the thumb below, and the index finger above. This is not recommended for safety reasons; a reflex reaction could cause the needle to recoil as it comes out of the arm, and stick into the index finger. The "L" hold technique (thumb 1-2 inches below and slightly to the side of puncture site, and fingers grasping underneath the arm) is the proper way to anchor the vein and secure the patient's arm.

I think she did a wonderful job in explaining the procedure, but the order of draw should have been gold then lavender.

She made a mistake. We never use our finger to lock the needle u can accidentally stick urself. We always lock it against a surface not our hand.

We were.taught to use the thumb because blood can splatter. You can use the table for an IM needle though no problem

no it's not. this is a terrible video! Wrong order of draw, closed the safety with her thumb, the proper angle of insertion is 30 degrees or less NOT 15 degrees, DO NOT pump the fist with the tourniquet on. This didn't follow CLSI or ASCP guidelines AT ALL!!!!! And this is from a college that focuses on health education?

we also tell our patients to drink a glass or two of H2O before their blood draw, and we do not encourage to anchor the vein above where you're going to stick the needle. (this is especially true for newbies)!

why safety glasses?? you are only drawing blood.../never uncap the needle, unless injecting- even for demonstration (that bothered me so much)../never pump the fist../injecting looked a little different (like she was jabbing it in the arm)/wrong order of draw (correct way - Yellow.Blue.Red.SST.Green.Lavender.Gray)- gold should of been before lavender .. some of the things i noticed. I am currently in a MA program in Michigan, and we were taught differently.

1:41 The patient signals to the MA because she already vocally identified the patient by name instead of simply introducing herself and asking for verification. We do not call the patient by name with procedures like this.

Nice video!! It's easy to make an order of draw mistake so don't let the gremlins get you down. I think I wrote the textbook that you used as a narrative guide to make this video (Bonewit-West). I sure know how hard it is to make a video as we did videos for all the procedures in the textbook--can't count the number of retakes.0

Problem one, the patient should never pump their fist. This causes hemoconcentration which will result in a bad sample. Two. Never anchor the vein in the C position. Your needle is directly in front of your finger and can result in accidental stick. Three. Never use cotton to stop the bleeding. The fibers can stick to the site and cause bleeding again. Four. Never is a band aid. This can cause skin irritation or tear the skin with people who have thin skin. Also, always put the tubes in with the label up so you can see the blood flow.

I had a lab test and when I put the needle in my vein, the nurse used the syringe and no blood came out, I got air and gave me an injection (I never took the needle out of the vein), moved the needle from side to side and finally, draw blood from the vein. Is that air bad to inject it? Should the needle be moved like this to find the vein?

wrong order of draw.... the reason we have to follow the recommended order of draw is because addivites can carry over from one tube to the next and u might be risking the patients life

Can these needles be reused?

I don't think the order of draw was used in this video I know this is just a video for demonstration but I always draw the gel barrier tube before the EDTA tube

yes, it's a very bad practice to "inject" air inside. meanwhile, the moving of the needle is called probing, it is to blindly search for the vein if the phleb wasn't able to hit it the first time. possible, but totally not recommended as it may cause hematoma and other injuries

never seen so many NO NO mistakes! finger placement,gloves too big which can cause traction problems, anchoring the artery above the puncture site.. order of draw, touching the needle, (even for educational purposes, at least specify it was for that use), also she took off the needle cap fast and when you do that, the body can have a natural reaction to go back and hit the needle accidentally. Also, that sharps container is way too full. PLEASE go find a credible source to learn phlebotomy!

Kyle Bell you are incorrect...you should be drawing a vein not an artery but she anchored the vein properly, I am certified and have been doing phlebotomy for quite some time and that is how to anchor a vein although you can also anchor only below it doesn't hold the vein as well, doesn't matter how fast she took the cap off that's up to her

gwynn nippert It does so matter how fast she took the cap off of the needle. It was disgusting how fast she took it off. It should be at a much slower pace to ensure everyone's safety. If this was a real patient and she did that it would scare the patient. And if she had accidently stuck herself the patient would be questioning rather he or she would let that lady draw her blood. Stop trolling unless you have the facts and its obvious that you don't.

Nina Morris I am not incorrect this is how we were taught in our class. You should be anchoring far enough away from the puncture spot to not be risking an accidental needle stick

I'm still in school for med lab assistant. If anyone in the industry could answer this, I would greatly appreciate your wisdom. We do full inversions for all tubes. For example a lavender would be inverted 8-10 times, and additional tubes require invasions as per the additive. In the "real world" do phlebotomists do full inversions? I find that beyond three tubes, my tourniquet time far exceeds one minute. Maybe I'm still a slow newbie:) Any thoughts?

I think it's just b/c you're new. Probably not anymore...but at the time of your comment. I'm new right now. Have 3 classes left out of 2 months. You'll get faster naturally,just don't rush it. I don't need to tell you what to do though. I am just a student still. I'd ask a pro just to be safe. Good luck!!

Someone told me that if you're afraid to hurt people then you're in the wrong field because you're going to hurt people. Not on purpose or because of negligence,of course. I don't want to hurt folks either. My main problem was the stick itself. I believe you can train your nerves. It's difficult,but it can be done. I had a slight shaking problem at first. After doing 30 sticks,I'm happy to report that's not an issue anymore. Please don't let anchoring cause you a problem. If I can get over my fear,I believe you can defeat yours. I believe in you & I don't even know you. Best of luck to you! :) Maybe it'd be helpful to know that anchoring actually helps the procedure be less painful? I read that in the "Ten Commandments of Phlebotomy".

I have just finished a 3 day course in phlebotomy at the maxis healthcare, certificate of competence, certificate of attendance, plus 23 live blood draws from patience in London, experience in vacutainer and monevette system,and butterfly technic just need a chance I am good at this job and know I would make a great phlebotomist" I will also be able to send you my references to and any other information you need I would also be willing to volunteer to show you my skills, as I am very impressed with myself meaning I have never done this before

Yeah certain people make certain mistakes when it comes to patient contacts.There is like 3-4 mistakes i''ve seen so far on this instruction video.

Most Importantly, never anchor the skin above the puncture site. If the patient moves as the needle enters the skin, the needle could puncture the finger anchoring above.

kuhataparunks palpate with a tourniquet on, you'll feel it. It'll take a couple tries but you'll get it

I wondered the same thing about the glasses. Different institutions teach different techniques though. I'd love to know because I'm interested in learning all I can. Even though I just graduated from my training course, I'm sure I've got a lot more to learn.

+Fritz Araeb yes depends on where you go, we were taught to wear the glasses because blood can splatter. our order of draw is , blue, yellow which are the blood cultures, tiger top, blue top, lavender top then gray top. before becoming a phlebotomist I was a MA and before we pcsed to hawaii we were in Georgia and we were taught the lavender top was the(ptptt) but in hawaii the blue top is the ptptt and the lavender top is the k2edta I was all confused hahahaha.

Depends on the tests that the blood will be ran through. Typically you will at least use the lavender vacutainer. Lavender is typically plain, yellow, red, blue, or orange will typically be used to test for specific elements in the blood. The lab rec sheet should indicate color and order of vacutainers. For example: LYRB would be Lavender, followed byYellow, Red, and then Blue.

The correct order of draw would indicate drawing the yellow first. This looks like a dated video hence why the draw was not followed. The order of draw is supposed to be always followed and you should not deviate from that order or you risk ruining the test because the additives in the tube can mix with each other if they are drawn out of order. Order of draw should be: Blue, Red, SST(Gold/red tiger, Green, Lavender, Gray)

order of draw is not correct gloves too big and cotton ball should never be used, she should have used gauze pads to prevent cotton fibers from adhering to the needle puncture.

Tourniquet do not stay wrapped during the procedure it should have been popped at the flow of blood so that the red blood cells do not break.

tourniquet should be placed 3 inches above the crease of the are and as soon as blood starts to draw untie tourniquet, if tourniquet is left on over 1 min that can result in inaccurate test results. #medicalassistant
