I also didn't realize they want to be kept moist. Mine is struggling and I couldn't figure out why. I've been treating her like a regular philo and letting her dry out. Thank you for this video!!

Awww, no problem, that was my experience, it kinda enjoyed not fully drying our, which kinda makes sense with the thin roots 😊💚🌿

Thankyou for talking about the issues this plant is prone to. I got a P.V in 2020 via fb. It was an unrooted single leaf cutting. Its had a lot if issues, root rot, thrip and not bearing more than 2 leaves at a time. This year for the first time it has several leaves, I put this down to it now living in a converted fish tank terrarium. Also I have it in orchid bark.

Hello, I'm so happy I found you. You've probably heard this before but I'll offer it anywho. I have found that a mixture of neem oil & castile soup, sprayed on mealy bugs, maybe 3 or 4 times over a few weeks works like a charm. If they come back, just do it again. Luv you

Thank you for your honest reviews. I always try to find before you buy videos about a plant before buying it but at the time everyone said "yay the Verrucosum is so beautiful and grows so fast". That has really been a problem with the plant community for a while - i think it's getting better now - that plants, especially rare plants got so hyped that people see through it and just perfected the plants as soooo great. Only later I found out that it's a pest magnet. Now I feel forced to keep mine in constant isolation.

Awww glad you appreciate the honesty, I was like you never finding truly honest reviews past the look how pretty it is, so I thought let's try reviews. But yeah they is definately a plant that should come with a pest warning 😬😬😬

I bought a Verrucosum wet stick 3 months ago and it yielded 2 plants which are both doing really well in Leca pot and saucer method. They seem to get just enough moisture from keeping the saucer toped with nutrient solution . I have a small 'jungle set up in a room with 3 aquariums , the humidity in summer stays between 68% and 77% and all my philodendrons are doing great in Leca. The only pests I've encountered are fungus gnats which I assume come from a couple of soil potted plants, they don't bother the leca grown stuff. Love your videos.

Concerning Alocasias in Pon: I wouldn't put them in normal Pon because often the mixtures of the substrates are too fine. I really struggled with my Alos in aroid mixes or other substrates until I mixed my mineral substrate by myself with very chunky zeolite, lava and pumice (8-16 mm) and put them in self-watering systems. And now they are literally thriving. Root rot is history now and they are very fine with low humidity and general household conditions Concerning the review: Thanks a lot! I really wanted to buy the Verrucosum but for me it would obviously not be possible to keep that plant happy because I only have household conditions. So it was very necessary for me to see that video and stop dreaming of that plant for now😅

I wish I would have watched your verrocosum videos THREE DAYS AGO… 😅 Picked up 3 p. Ecuadors for $15 each, new growth like crazy and gorgeous leaves. I said WHY NOT? Looks like I have some fun times ahead of me. The seller said “Just treat it like a calathea. Moist, but no wet feet! Or misting… You’ll be fine.” I must have been the only buyer. Wish me luck everyone!!! 😂

Thank you for pointing out the tip for changing substrate on mature/established plants. I never put two and two together. Sometimes I mix some of the old peat into my orchid bark and that helps. Always learning something new from your videos! Thanks

Ohhh no problem Jane, yeah I learned that one the hard way, but I do something similar to you now, I leave some of the old soil mix in too, so as to not shock the plant id I absolutely have to.

Oh you are right about the fine root system! I just repotted my first Verrucosum to put her on a moss pole. She had been grown in moss to that point and I could not even tell the moss from her roots, they were so fine! I ended up plopping the whole sphagnum moss root ball in the airoid mix b/c I was afraid of snapping the roots off with the moss.

It's great to have a planty person that's honest and has weather conditions just as rubbish as me lol. Iam in uk too 🙂

Super useful video & warning on this plant. I heard from Kaylee from the Rare Plant Shop and other growers too that it's a spider mite magnet. After hearing all this and you confirming it, I am definitely not going to get it. Such a pity though - Verrucosum is so beautiful. However, I would get Philadendron El Choco Red instead - it has quite similar look and is said to be easy to take care of.

Mine took a few months to established (got it as a one leaf established cutting). I would say it's a but if a slow grower in my environment. However, I haven't had it for a full year yet so we shall see. If you want to see that plabt with massive leaves and roots, check out the Sydney plant guy and you will see how insane he grows them indoors, beauty! Thanks for the video!

I have 2verrucosuns and zero issues. I just use permetrine 1x month to prevent pests. I use aroid mix and they seem very happy

I've just got several verrucosum cuttings a few months ago and they seem to really love damp sphagnum moss with a bit of perlite on the bottom, in fact the root structure is insane already! I do treat them with bonide pyrethrin every monthly (they havent had pests since I got them) but I only do this to ensure no pests build on them and they don't seem to be affected at all by this so far.

It might still be ok, I think the secret of keeping spidermites down is knowing to always check it and address it early 😊💚🌿

I have a baby verrucosum and I've already given up on using anything but the aggressive chemicals for pest management. For mealybugs I don't even bother with cotton swabs. I just put isopropyl alcohol into a sprayer and spray the whole thing down. Don't have a pest problem anymore. Pretty sure the alcohol bath is doing the job but Captain Jack's dead bug is used on the rare occasion Have to rinse it after every spray down but man I have zero issues.

@@Houseplantygoodness I only have one and a half leaves plus one coming out, but I think it's a really pretty plant when mature so I want to at least try. I might try one of the hybrids at some point if I can't keep it in a passable state. I think it's probably the prettiest of the velvet philodendron so I guess I'm going to try. I'm probably going to get a philodendron glorious and a more mature gigas (if I find one) at some point so I predict I'm probably going to grow out of verrucosum but I'm treating it like a crash course in pest management while I have it. I've never had anything but a hoya bella get any serious pests and I only recently got new clean growth on her

Since it likes to stay moist... do you think the philodendron spelndid would also have the same type of need for the substrate? I wast hinking since its a hybrid from melo and vero, it may liek the semi drying out of the first few inches before a watering again.

I finally found this plant about a month ago (but not your video) and got it. I'm looking at it and my heart hurts, I don't think it has any pests, but it struggles and I think it'll be on its way in less than a month 😭

I hope I have better experience with mine. Knock on wood but no drama yet but I will go and check it right after this

I have not found it easy to propagate at all! Two cuttings have rotted on me(multiple tries and in multiple substrates). I've managed to keep one alive but still growing very very slowly and has only two or three leaves at a time. I have tried moving it's location. It is in a perlite/stratum mix in a greenhouse tent with grow lights. No pest issues. 🤷‍♀️

Maybe I have one with bad genetics but I know the seller and don't believe that's the case. I've heard of a lot of other people having issues with this plant being difficult. Wish me luck...I'm close to throwing in the towel lol

Ohhh bless ya I know the feeling. If you couldn't tell I pretty much already threw the towel out the window with this one 😅😅😅😅😅 if you really want to make it work, some people have found good success with terrariums from what I hear

I just saw this 1 plant cutting on sale yesterday and was very attempted to buy it, but I think I will on hold for now till I do more research on veru. I also watched another vid where the owner grows it in a no-drainage setup to keep its bottom root system moist at all times, and he said it was no fuss even with 30%+ humility at his area. And he let it trail instead of climbing so that the leaves stays palm sized :) Would you like to try a no-drainage setup, for experiment hah.

I adore this plant, much easily and cheaper to buy here in NZ now thank goodness! Colours are stunning. Also... I can't NOT mention that gold bling on your ring finger 🤷 celebrations?

Hey hey hey, ahhh nice that is really good, I know from some of my viewers that sometimes in NZ and AUS it can be a bit pricey. Is it easy to keep there? Ahhhhhh eagle eyed!!! 👀👀👀👀 no sadly no celebrations, just a ring my mum gave me from an old set of earrings, which was kinds like an inheritance. I know a bit weird, but a great way to remember her by. I try to wear it on the right hand to avoid mix ups, but realised recently that different countries wear engagement rings on different hands 😜

Ya, I did my vericosum in aroid mix... never had bugs, but I did release the ladies (bugs), but only cuz spider mites on my alocasias.... though, my is just starting to get the fuzzy petioles, so will see.

I propagated three cuttings in water but added pon once they started rooting.

The clips when you mention mealybugs doesn't look like one but like a predatory one (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri , the young of a ladybug). It is moving to fast. I got mine as an unrooted cutting and rooted it on water.

I thought so too, but that was the best clip close up (tagged as mealybugs) that I found online as I struggle to get a good shot of them. But yeah I think you are right it looks like the predator

Ahhh nooo, sorry if it put you off it, I am not so sure everyone experiences mealybugs on this, but I know loads of peeps have spidermite issues for sure 😅😅😅

I also dont like this plant but not for the same reasons. I dont have any pest issue with this one, maybe because I have isolated it in my bedroom with my more succulent plants that get spidermites but not the same species. I find the leaves beautifull in a sense but it would be more beautifull on my green wall with the other vines but I am too afraid to move it there and see it catching and incubating for everyone spidermites. It also in a sort of uncanny valley of hardiness. It grow well in my cold and dry winter air (unheated Paris since it's with my cacti) and the new leaves are small but pristine. But the old ones irritate me. They are ugly since I bought it, but the refuse to die. I had to cut them to give it a "decent" look and I hate cutting still usefull leaves. As a result the plant is a broom of pristine leaves on a very leggy plant. My brandtianum had very hard times but look better. It's not horrible but it's taking precious space in an unharmonic way. It was one of two plant I bought not because I wanted it but to try more difficult/trendy plants and I regret. I seriously plan to getting rid of it, I will either trade with people or with my local botanical garden. They also struggle to keep it decent looking and I'm kind of proud to have a better looking than their's. If you want it, my advise is to buy a small plant and acclimate it to your setup. It's very unique looking even with the huge Philodendron diversity. And with all the different cultivars it's highly collectible if you manage to keep it happy. Interesting thing: this Philodendron dont seems to need support to keep large leaves and Kunzo grow them successfully as hanging plants.

Ahhh love Kunzo!!!! yeah I find that true for most Philodendron too. but yeah the smaller one i started and acclimated in my conditions did give me less grief, not sure what happened to that one 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 but yeah definitely weirdly hardy here too i found, in the conservatory it was leaning against a cold window at some point and it seemed to love it.

Stop buying clothes and jewelry and going out and build your plants a decent constant home!
