Manjula Pothos Review | 4 Years Later | Is the Manjula Epipremnum worth the hype?

In this video I continue the plant review series, with the Manjula Pothos. The Manjula Pothos is a variety of Epipremnum

Happy Leaf is a name used mostly to sell Manjula, but since Manjula is patented only one nursery can sell them and other rename it Happy Leaf, Harlequin etc... If you find Happy Leaf different it's because Manjula is a slightly unstable variety and Happy Leaf are a propagate of propagate while the original nursery only sell Manjula with very typical leaves and discard the less perfect cuttings. Snow Queen is originally the name used by some australian shops to sell both Marble Queen and N'Joy, regardless of the level of variegation. The Pothos collectors took the name and reused it for highly variegated MQ but since it's unstable and sensitive to environmental conditions I dont think it's a "thing".

Harlequin is actually different from Manjula. Harlequin has even more white than Manjula. I can see some sellers selling Harlequin as Holland Manjula at leas here in the Philippines.

  • @StalkerNaturaliste

It can be an endless discussion because Harlequin is not a patented variety. Many unpatented pothos names are used to sell patented ones without the copyright. And since they are not the original seller they dont select the strands carefully enough to perfectly match the patent. I just bought a 'White Panther'. It's just a 'Pearl & Jade' really, but on 3 branches, one have lost the green speckles and the other is loosing the silver on it's last leaf. The patented pot would have been pruned better. In another shop I have seen pots without a name, what was planted was obliously single node Manjulas but the new stems were looking like Manjula, Harlequin, N'Joy and Marble Queen. Because it's normal for them to switch to one another sometimes and it happened.

Hey from South Africa 👋🇿🇦! Although Monsteras aren't native here, I can tell you that they grow very well here-probably because of our mild winters- I have seen them growing up trees, walls of houses/apartment buildings as well as in a 'flower bed' in an office building- all of wich have MASSIVE leaves! I have yet to see one with variegation 😂. Also ivy grows wild here, but it probably grows like that everywhere 😂. Stay healthy 🤗💚!

I do too find Manjula to be a slow grower. I move my plants outside for the summer. Amazingly, it started growing faster. The plant is sitting in a bright indirect light in very high humidity and a high heat. I think it is just finicky about the conditions it is in. Love your videos! I have my Manjula in an East-facing window in west central Florida, U.S. and it has been a surprisingly prolific grower. I’ve only had it since late winter and I’m pretty sure it’s going to need a repot by the end of this growing season. :)

I bought a manjula pothos in 2020 for £6 from a local nursery. It was labelled Epipremnum Happy leaf. A fellow instagrammer told me it was a Manjula. I found it was extremely slow and it had very short internodal space. Leaves also went crispy. I found it very fussy and eventually gave up on this plant and probably won't buy another. I replaced it with an Njoy this year and I also have Marble queen which I'm glad to say is growing much better than the Manjula.

interesting! My manjula has been totally easy going, I've just had it in an E facing window where it grew happily all summer. Now its in my big fishtank terrarium rooting into sphagnum fer propagation. It's never hinted at rotting or anything else, I have it in my standard aroid mix. A plant I like a lot!! :) And yes ivy - a declared environmental weed in my part of Australia!

I love your idea of this being a resource and I am happy to share my experiences growing indoor and outdoor in FL, USA. This plant is easy to get at big box stores every few months or so. It grows the same as my marble queen. I would say it really sizes down when cut and slower to size up again but a plank helps! I grow in chunky aroid mix no pest pressures. The plant climbing my palm tree outdoors has leaves larger than my hand after 1 year. The indoor plant isn’t on a pole so not sizing up and putting out leaves more slowly. Easy to prop in water. It does revert if not enough light and variegation doesn’t seem to come back again once green in the stem. Thank you for sharing!

Here is some info :Epipremnum Aureum comes in various forms. green with white variegations are marble queen (marbled), manjula (marbled with green on outer), n' joy aka frosty (white and green no marbling), glacier (also no marbling but white, green and light green) and pearls and jade ( like manjula but green spots instead of marbling)

Also these names are country dependent. What we call a Snow Queen in Australia sometimes looks like a NJoy, Pearls & Jade and Glacier (depends on varigation though I've had all three variegations on the one plant 😅 so ours could possibly be a hybrid or something... but yeah our Snow Queen is definitely not a whiter Marble queen - as they're still a marble)

Also half the plant pushed out creamy variegated leaves while the other half had the variegated white and 2 greens. Weird

My Manjula is a bit slow, never suffered from a root rot, and would generally be fine except for one thing: I brought it from the shop with thrips and I can´t get rid of them no matter what I spray it with. Now I have a water propagated cutting growing in pon and all would be fine except for the thrips. Two leaves left... It seems that I´m going to loose the months-long battle with this one 😞

I was of the impression that "Manjula" and "Happy Leaf" were the same. Apparently the names are copyrighted in some countries and growers have to give them new names, like philodendron "Birkin" is called "White Measure" in some countries. I think "Marble Queen" and "Snow Queen" are the same too, I had one bought as a MQ in a south facing window (it was in a corner so not much direct sun) and it was snow white and grew like crazy, placed darker and less white. I semi believe someone is just coming up with new names so they can push more plants on us
