Phase 11: Off Grid Living in Remote Interior Alaska: Kitchen, Dining Room & the Frozen Tundra

In phase 11 you get to see more of a peek of our off grid life on weekends when we arrive to a frozen cabin, the struggles we face, and helpful tools we have found to be useful in this lifestyle.
We also add our pantry, stock our kitchen, bring out and assemble our dining room, and most importantly have fun making memories with our children!

Unfortunately the propane wouldn’t flow until the cabin warmed up. Led to a dinner 3.5-4 hours later after arrival for what was planned in the oven.

That would have worked as well, it wasn’t too frozen, as most could be pulled apart, but a few were still pretty solid.

Just a FYI. Cast Iron should never have Coconut Oil added to them for seasoning cold. It is highly recommended that Coconut Oil only be used for seasoning if the Cast Iron is at least 350 degrees Fahrenheit. It should never be used to season Cast Iron Cold!! 🥶 If you’re going to use Coconut Oil to season your Cast Iron, it is recommended Not to use if your heat is higher than the coconut oil’s smoke point. Doing this will you run the risk of breaking down the seasoning bond of the Cast Iron. So for all you Gen Z’ers that think you know better, take a note from Gen X (The Best Generation) don’t mess up your Cast Iron, just because it says it Organic doesn’t mean it’s Organic!! Also, While people think Coconut Oul is a Healthy Option to cook with, it has been documented through the American Medical Association that says; Coconut Oil is Not the Best or Healthier option when it comes to cooking with such oil. Just remember, you can’t get more organic than to go out and catch your own fish, kill your own birds and kill your own; deer, moose, bear, sheep and caribou. Organic Meats, Oil’s, Protein, Chicken, and Food isn’t Always Organic! I know your in Alaska, but here In the lower 48, Trader Joe ‘s the Famous “Organic” grocery store change has been “Shut Down” and what I mean by “Shut Down” is that the Stores across the Lower 48 had Meats, Food and Food Products along with Household Products that were marked as “Organic” and they were Not! They Closed these stores for 2 weeks or more and removed over 90% of their inventory. This has happened more than once too! Over the past 5 years, it has happened more than 25 times during this 5 year period. So I know you Gen Z’ers think you know all about the Organic life and Save the Planet life, but all you need to do is ask a Gen X man or woman and you’ll get the answers your looking for without having to ask “Google” for the answers. Good luck in Alaska as I was stationed there when I was in the U.S. Army for over 6 years. So just remember that before you go off saying I dontmlkk no ow what’s it’s like to live in Alaska. Stay Frost my friends and Keep those American Flags Flying High!!! Remember, those that came before us gave you the “Rights” to be able to live in that awesome Sate of Alaska!! 2A all the Way Baby!! We Will Defend That!! God Bless and Stay Frosty 🥶❄️❄️🥶my friends!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I appreciate your input. 1. Our cast iron is seasoned and we didn’t use coconut oil to do it and it shouldn’t need to constantly be reseasoned. 2. I grew up using cast iron (not a Gen Zer 😉). Coconut oil has only been used on a hot pan as cooking oil itself, which also happens to keep it seasoned during/after use strictly because our other oil there freezes and doesn’t thaw in time to use for cooking which is why we chose a solid based oil for cooking purposes. We rarely cook with it in our primary residence. We don’t eat “organic labeled items” I was born and raised on a farm, I have extensive knowledge with “organic” our version of organic is harvested meats and foraged foods from the land here. We don’t have those stores as you know here in Alaska, and definitely isn’t a trending frenzy here and I’m not familiar with life in the L48 but I imagine it probably is. I’m not in touch with any of what happens there and I prefer it that way. If you are just joining us, I encourage you to check out our prior videos. You’ll learn that the military also brought us here. My husband was infantry for 10 years and got out specifically to stay here. If you’ve watched it all you’ll clearly see that we are very 2A friendly and our children are knowledgeable in proper gun safety, handling and use 😉 I know you are educating others here, thank you, but I want to assure you, we appreciate our freedom, and my husband has contributed to that for our great nation as well as many of our relatives before him and this farm girl knows all about harvesting food and truly organic ☺️

@@Wild-and-Free-Interior-Alaska Hello Again! Looks like I’m the one with egg on his face once again!!!😮 I’m truly sorry I didn’t get to watch your previous videos and I just got caught up in this video and responded in an inappropriate way! I do apologize for the lack of knowledge of you and your family. Sometimes I just get to watching some of these videos and send a little message before I think it through. Tell your husband , thank you sir for your service to this great Nation!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 I was in the Army for 25 years and got out as a Captain. Had to retire due to breaking my back in a training exercise at Fort Campbell, KY. I loved serving my country and would say it was a different military than it is today! I really worry about the Military and its Recruitment of these kids today!! So glad to see you guys teaching your kids blow to be gun safe and engaging in a sport that they’ll love and remember mom and dad teaching them about thenresponsibility that comes with gun safety! I’m an avid component of the 2A. I also believe that every men or women coming out of High School should at least spend 2 years serving our country. It could either be National Guard or Full-Time. The Military was a Great place for me to grow into the man I’ve become thanks to my mom and dad. My dad was in the Military for 28 years. So the Military/Army and Air Force runs deep in my family. I will watch the previous videos of you and your family. Again? I’m so sorry for having jumped the gun about you and your family before actually watching and learning who you guys truly are. I do have a couple of questions for ya?? 1) Are you guys from here in the Lower 48? 2) How long have you lived in AK? 3) Did you say both of you were in the Military? Thank you for your time and I hope you guys say warm up there in AK. I sure do miss it there and would love to move back there one day soon!! Just don’t have the finances to do so at the minute… So Thank You and Again So Sorry for coming off as Rude and Mean. I wish you and your family nothing but happiness and love!!! 😊 Be Happy and Sray Safe!! God Bless you and your family and God Bless the United States of America 🇺🇸!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💯💯💯

No worries, no offense taken, just sharing we aren’t the typical “let’s go to Alaska to create content because we think others will like it” no, we built this cabin first. I didn’t film it with intentions of sharing, it was originally just for us to look back on, but we decided this was a better place for us to “house” our experiences to look back on later with our kids as they grow into men. I recommend watching the “getting to know us” fire side chat, it’ll share a lot about why we are here and doing this. We are originally from the East coast. This is our 7th winter in Alaska. My husband served, and got out in Alaska because we couldn’t imagine living anywhere else and raising our boys. He made that sacrifice to stay here and it’s been the best decision, because as you said, the Military isn’t the same as it used to be. I did not serve. It has been -40 for a few days and anywhere from -25/-30 during the day the past week and next 10 days it’s expected, so it’s too cold to travel to the cabin unfortunately. We’re you stationed at Wainwright, Eielson or JBeR? Thank you for your service.

They aren’t left in the cold, they are traveling with us on the entire journey and wear jackets. Our vehicle has heat, they ride along with us on the snowmachines with jackets and blankets. I’m not sure how you believe they are left in a vehicle unattended.
