Phase 12: Off Grid Living in Remote Interior Alaska: Trouble on the Trails & Kitchen Island

In this phase of our off grid living in remote interior Alaska, we share our struggles and troubles on the trail to the cabin. We also sit down by the fire as the cabin warms up to discuss what happened. Later on, we make progress on another project, the kitchen island!

There really isn’t. The weather and conditions can be detrimental. It’s important to keep a positive attitude and stay focused to get the goal completed. It can be very challenging out there.

You are welcome. I know wind noise is less than ideal. But those are the conditions we are presented with and I prefer to share what’s happening in the moment!

Mark the trail with tape in the trees to mark a trail from tree to tree use florescent orange or green.

Thanks for the idea, we can do that in certain areas, but across the ridges there are not too many visible trees, most are already under the snow depth or it is bare where we can’t determine the direction when at the tops of the ridge. The marked florescent tape doesn’t show up in the white out conditions or get picked up my the headlights when it’s a ways in the distance unfortunately. The tripod we put up did not withstand the 50mph winds.

Yea we always carry it with us and it’s mapped out on it, but still difficult to find the exact location and get back to where the existing trail is buried. But it is crucial to have with us.

Do you not have a GPS for times like that? It is amazing how positive you two stayed during all of it. The cabin is coming together nicely. Enjoy watching your families adventures

We do have our inreach and the trail marked but even referencing that we only knew a general direction to get back on track, which we had already figured out. Finding exactly where the prior trail should be is the challenging part and no markers (think driveway reflectors) were visible anymore as the snow depth was too high. If we don’t travel on exactly where the trail should be we 1. Won’t locate it. 2. Will be even more stuck as it is extremely deep in the valley and you have to remain on the prepacked trail we have set in, even if we can’t see it. Makes for a challenging trip at times. We do try to stay positive through it all. We’ve experienced a great deal of misery trying to make it on that trail that keeping a positive outlook is crucial to survival out there. Thanks for continuing to follow us!

Someone else added those through some tricky parts, but the snow has now covered 95% of them and only a few just the reflector was visible at snow level.

It absolutely can be, which is why we try to be prepared in many different ways and do not recommend anyone unfamiliar with the territory try to ride out there. Definitely could die out there.

We never knew such a thing existed and it is so cool. A tea light burns for about 4 hours of light. It’s super affordable long term and gives off a decent amount of light. Highly recommend. a.co/d/64XbWpi

We never know what to expect, whether it will be good weather, good visibility or difficult weather. It can be very unpredictable in a matter of moments. You can head out in nice weather and it changes instantly. The following trip we did do in the day light so we could navigate the new drifts after additional snowfall. Unfortunately this isn’t our first tough travels, but it certainly helps us to evaluate our gear and preparedness. Having a positive mindset and being ready for anything is essential and a skill we share with our children.
