Finally an old truck where the owner is keeping the old 13 speed shifter knob. Dad owned one just like it with a 350 cummins. Love the old cabin overs

Good lookin ride. I had a 77 with the NTA420, 13, with 4:11’s and 24.5 high profiles. Right from the factory it would rev to 2500, which tickled the underside of 95 mph. Loved it.

You're the "Lucky Dawg" getting to drive your "Big Dawg", Dane. Love how you've kept the Her mostly original. Many years ago I drove a 1968 Pete COE, Model 351 hauling produce out of California to the mid-west. The then almost new rig had a 318 Detroit with 4x4 trannies. It was a great truck as long as you were on flat ground. My first cross-country experience at the tender age of 23. Wonderful memories of the Pete COE so similar to your gorgeous machine. Looking forward to your future videos. :) PS: The first commercial truck I drove was a 1958 Pete COE, Model 281 (no tilt), with an NH 220 Cummins (175 HP), in front of a 5 speed main box with a 2 speed air shift rear end, and wedge brakes. This was a dual drive (3-axle) tractor with rubber belts that powered the rear (tag) axle. No air seat, no power steering, no Jakes, etc.. The air conditioning was "roll down the windows and go 55 mph". Old school days. :)

I had owned a '79 Freightliner c.o.e. with my best friend many moons ago. We bought the truck around '81 or '82. The big cam 290 was rebuilt by my friend and his brother who were both certified diesel mechanics before going on the road.It was turned up just a little bit and ran fine. From your other vid on the trucking co., I forgot to mention the I-H conventional cabover CONCO looked strange w/ the cab offset to the driver's side like the old Hayes & Pacific logging trucks. This was because the engines took up the passenger space. If I remember correct- ly, the short nose lifted up, and the cab tilted forward like a c.o.e. for servicing.

The main reason, as I recall, for changing out those original type shift knobs was the noise! Those things had check balls in them that were plastic I believe and after a bit of wear they would rattle constantly, a kind of buzzing sound that would drive you nuts!
