I worked at Poplar Creek music theater in Illinois for a couple of summers. One summer Chapman played & I'll never forget seeing her walking her dog way up high in the lawn seats while we were cleaning up all the beer puke vomit in the seated section from the night before in preparation for her concert that night. Being only 17 at the time I had no nerve to try to interact with her but I'm so glad I seen her IRL even if only for a couple minutes.

NEVER GIVE UP Upon waking, alone in my apartment, feeling down about my health and wondering what I should do...I thought it a good idea to take a walk but, after a cup of coffee and a slice of toast. It was a cold September day and the sky was blue. After leaving my apartment and coming to the main sidewalk, where I usually take a right, I took a left. A mile or so, I rested, took a few deep breaths, looked to the blue sky, and longed for the long-ago' spring in my step. A bit later, the coo of a Mourning Dove, alight on a branch and high above, got my attention. I looked and smiled, “Good morning, Mourning Dove”. I, then, let my gaze fall to a lower branch, where I beheld a single fading green stem and turning leaf, touched by a ray of sunlight. I walked over to the branch, and gently with thumb and forefinger, touched the 'holding on'. I felt a warmth, a determination, and on my walk back home, with the image of stem and leaf in mind, I felt a spring in my step; The leaf won't let go and neither shall I.theimage of that golden leaf, held me steadfast in the belief to never give up, always catch the sun.*

When peter first introduced tracy chapman in 1990 I immediately took to her style and thought she was awesome.This is one of my favorite renditions for sure.

Don't get me wrong, Kate Bush will always be a goddess and the queen of this song. (Even though Peter originally wanted Dolly Parton to sing her part) but Tracy brings a beautiful new energy to this song. Absolutely beautiful.

I remember seeing/hearing Sledgehammer on MTV back when it first came out. It really saddened me because the artist I had loved since the 70s was now going to be a megastar. He was like my musical secret until then.
