Excellent video, man 👍
Thanks. for the. video. I really enjoyed the content. Nice reel.
Thanks for the review, your sarcasm and wit are entertaining :) You sold me on the slammer, I am one who can't or would not be able to tell the difference between the 2, plus I like the black and gold color better LOL
Fantastic intro
your videos should have a lot more views great video
NowI know! Thanks a lot really helped

I lost a 100# snook and I can’t help but think of I just had one more sealed bearing installed in my thumb I would’ve landed that beast!

One more sealed bearing definitely would've landed that snook. Though a 100Lb snook....thats a lot of fish for any rig haha.

World record snook was 53 pounds. Nice try tho
I think the washer material difference might have to do with the softer material acting as a thrust bushing. If it was brass on brass or steel on steel there might be a welding or oxidation issue.
a man who knows more than he talks , straight to the subject , great review as always Q if ur time miight allows , lately i was playing with my two reels shimano stella 6000hgc n penn authority 4500 handle power knob , i noticed the shimano power knob would run alot longer than that of authority , which i relate it to bbs tighter seals of authority ! i hope to have it confirmed by you.

The authority has a ridiculous amount of seals and is likely dragging down the smoothness/increasing the friction. Haha it has so many small seals, it concerns me for the long haul.
ah, the slammer.. good reels for sure
I love the nod to Garand Thumb! I have a Battle III DX 5000 that I'm probably going to give to my son. I'm thinking of replacing it with the Slammer IV DX. Thanks for the review!

I was lucky enough to play around with the DX line at my local shop. I couldn't tell a difference between the DX and non-DX at all while playing with them in a shop. I doubt I could tell a difference in use either. You have to be buying it for knowledge that the stainless steel gears are "better" and the extra bearing helps somehow....or just looks. But I did like the lower end of the drag. My Slammer III 4500 on the low end is a bit stiff.

Agree on all, you nailed it. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your insight, glad you were able to put hands on one. Yeah I think 9.9 out of 10 folks would never know the difference between the two.
Thank you for your detailed videos. I am a Slammer guuy through and through with III's and IV's and 3 DX's -I have been looking at the authority 4500HS and wondering if you have thoughts on the HS v regular?
It is possible that Penn could have placed a wide needle bearing in there. Would certainly be an upgrade.
i got a 2500dx here in Australia , now I can't bring myself to use it , so I bought a spinfisher vi 2500
Hello and thank you for your very informative videos! After watching several of your videos, I decided to buy a Penn Slammer (DX) but still need to order it. I have two questions that I hope you can answer. So far, Shimano 4000 reels have been ideal for my purposes. Penn has the reputation of being significantly heavier, but after thorough research, this no longer seems to be the case to me. According to Penn, a Penn Slammer IV 2500 has a line capacity of 160 m / 0.28 mm. According to Shimano, a Shimano Stradic FL 4000 has a line capacity of 120 m / 0.30 mm. When i normalize those numbers to a 0.30 mm line i get the following values: Penn Slammer 2500: Capacity for 0.30 mm line: approx. 139.38 meters. Shimano Stradic 4000: Capacity for 0.30 mm line: 120 meters. According to this calculation, the Penn Slammer 2500 even has about 20 metres more line capacity when using the same line than the Shimano 4000. The Slammer in the 2500 size weighs only 50 grams more than the Stradic 4000, which I would overlook in my choice if I get a more water proofed reel in return. The only difference then is the drag power, which is 3 kg higher in the Stradic compared to the Slammer, but I can also overlook this. Question 1: Does this mean that a Shimano 4000 corresponds more closely to a Penn 2500 than lets say a 3500 or even 4000, or have I overlooked something important? Question 2: Do you now have an impression of the durability of the Slammer DX compared to the standard Slammer? I would greatly appreciate a brief response. Best regards from Switzerland!
Can you do a check up on both of the gears now?

I would take the battle iii dx over the regular since it has a brass gears over the aluminum
First of thank you for the information that you put out jere. It truly is helpful. In your honest opinion opinion. I am a Penn man all the way. I have 4 4500 HS Authority, and kove them. But I wanted to expand my arsenal with the SLammer IV. I have 4 Slammer III, and 57 of the old Slammmer the original that only had 5 and 6 bearings. Do you think that the Slammer IV DX is a good choice? As I love the 3.

Thanks for stopping by and glad to hear the info is helpful! I think you can’t go wrong with the Slammer 4. The 4DX is slightly more durable in theory. If you run a charter boat, the DX may give you a longer service life. However, for the average Joe, the regular Slammer 4 is all you need.
How can I order the line roller bearing for a slammer 4500dx? what size is it?
So how the gear wearing after 1 year? Still in good shape? Thanks
any update on the main gear its been 2 years now
I landed a 86 pound stingray from shore on my penn battle 3 dx 8000

Hi Guy's help req'd... one of those req'd features google won't find.... I am fishing for Sea Bass from a high cliff 100 meters (110 yards) with no access down... I gotta reel them all the way up, dead weight n all. I know most reels will reel up the fish but here's the deal... when reeling in water and reeling a dead weight (2- 2.5kg - 4lb)... that's a whole different league of power, smoothness and build quality. Kinda the ultimate test of a reel quality you could say. I am hoping some of you Guy's know which reels stand out for this? An open faced reel weighing around 485-500grams (1pound or just over) to match my rod and allow other uses. Thank You Guy's in advance.
Which one will be better for Salmon fishing rivers rod up to 100 gram lures up to 40 gr compered with daiwa bg mq thanks

Hard to beat a 3500 for salmon. I personally use 4500, but a tad overkill.
I think I wouldn't even consider getting the Authority 8500 HS if this DX was all metal body and came in a high speed model.

Yeah, really no need at all going beyond the Slammers. Even the slammers are excessive. The Battles and Spinfishers are incredible reels.

Yes the Battle 3 was a big upgrade compared to the Battle 2 starting with the line lay. My Spin Fisher V is still working great but I wish it had a brass main gear like the SF VI however the V's drag system is better. Despite having a zinc main gear it is holding up pretty well in my V.
How are the gears on the DX today? Still smooth or worn out?

That would be a beast of a reel!
What size do you recommend for bigger pier fish?
@CastFromTheHip
Жыл бұрын
I think a 5500 would be a good pier fishing rig for bigger fish. Maybe 6500 if you’re picking fights with big snook, king macks, tarpon or wahoo.
@CastFromTheHip
Жыл бұрын
For grouper or big snook near structures, I’d go for 8500 with max combat drag set.
Do you know if the bail arm is metal or plastic?

I have the 2500 standard slammer with 15 lb braid and it’s notorious for making wind knots. I have Shimanos too and they NEVER have wind knots. I love the concept that Penn has but it does not seem to work.

@@ioijiopjkiopjkp thanks. I tried that. 40 lb line worked though.
too much grease on the gears will increase resistance and thus the reel wont be butter smooth anymore
I have Penn slammer 3 5500 and it has line roller bearing issue. What do I do to get it change?
