Pedraza vs Davis FULL FIGHT: January 14, 2017

On January 14, 2017, Gervonta Davis overpowered 130-pound world champion Jose Pedraza, winning his first title by seventh-round TKO.
Gervonta Davis predicted he would knock out 130-pound champion Jose Pedraza, but was noncommittal on when the stoppage would occur, suggesting it could happen in “the eighth, nine or 10th round.” In the end, the 5-foot-6 “Tank” sold himself a little short.
After overpowering Pedraza (22-1, 12 KOs) for much of the fight, Davis (17-0, 16 KOs) finished off the Puerto Rican champion with a vicious right hook to the jaw late in the seventh round, earning a TKO victory.
By picking up his eight eight consecutive stoppage victory, the 22-year-old Davis claimed a world title in his first-ever championship opportunity. And while he more than earned that title with a dominant performance, he also got a lot of help from his opponent, who employed an odd strategy from the get-go in his third title defense.
Despite having a significant height and reach advantage, the 5-foot-8½ Pedraza chose to come out and pressure his smaller-but-stronger opponent with a come-forward style rather than box from the outside. Making matters worse, Pedraza-a naturally orthodox fighter who has the ability to switch-hit-decided to fight almost exclusively from a southpaw stance.
That game plan completely backfired, as Davis immediately took advantage of Pedraza’s aggression, repeatedly piercing his defense with pinpoint body shots and uppercuts with either hand as well as his overhand left.
Composed beyond his years, Davis flat-out punished Pedraza in the first three rounds, which the challenger swept on all three scorecards. Then in the fourth, when Pedraza raised both hands to his head, Davis went downstairs and hammered the body.
The undefeated champion did manage to gain some momentum toward the end of the fourth and carried it over to the fifth, when he increased his punch output significantly. But whatever momentum Davis lost he regained with a single punch early in the sixth: a left hook to the liver that caused Pedraza to double over.
Knowing he had his man hurt, Davis went on the attack while Pedraza went into survival mode, dropping his right arm to guard against another body shot. Somehow, Pedraza managed to get through the sixth, but it would be the last round he would finish.
Back firmly in control of the fight, Davis unleashed a vicious right hand to the jaw late in Round 7 that put Pedraza on his backside in a corner of the ring. Knocked down for the first time as a pro, Pedraza sat on the canvas until referee Ricky Gonzalez reached the count of nine, then made it to his feet.
However, Gonzalez quickly deemed Pedraza unfit to continue, waving an end to the fight-and Pedraza’s reign as champion-at the 2:36 mark.

Davis' body attack was brutal in this fight. When Pedraza starts that weird breathing/ "cuckoo'ing" in round 4, it means he's tired as hell and running on the spirit of his ancestors. He fought til he had nothing left and then kept going, respect.

I dont quite think so. Tank is the shorter fighter in most cases so hes going to have to take some heat to give some no matter what. I think it's a combination of believing in his power and just being at a height disadvantage from the start. The question is, can he take the heat from Teo and Garcia?

This is still the best Tank we've seen till this point. Absolutely relentless and brutal in his attacks while also being defensively sound. When I saw him in this fight he really reminded me much of Pretty Boy Floyd

Yea I totally agree this was his best performance to date and I have to think him being the challenger has something to do with that. Your mentality is different. This was the only fight tank has ever fought where he wasn't the betting favorite going in. He was hungry!

Clearly Floyd is (GENUINELY) happy for tank/fighters. To the point that he was crying on here After the win. Tank even said in a interview that when they asked Floyd was Tank the future of boxing that it surprised him when Floyd say YEA he is the future of boxing and if you look when Floyd answered that question you’ll see the look of surprise on Tank face when Floyd said it. Genuinely happy for him and many other fighters. A good dude the part that most people don’t talk about.

Watching Tank is like watching Iron Mike Sweet Pea and Floyd all at the same time.
This is not just a boxing match but a beautiful dancing. Pedraza is so underrated.
This was the best version of Pedraza too. A unbeaten confidence flowing champion and tank flat lined him in 7. He has never been the same since this loss and has never been beaten as badly as he was in this fight. Literally took years off his life.

When people going to give Tank credit he beat an undefeated fighter in his prime for the IBF World Title. Pedraza also defended that beat several times before this fight. Tank beat him convincingly you could see it in the first round Tank just different bro!
Never try showing a heavy puncher how well you can take a punch!!! As Pedraza went down, he could have thrown the left uppercut but stopped midswing, sportsmanship, business only!!

Yeah I ask myself the same thing how Jose a champ 🤷♂️ but did you notice something and yeah tanks career is just starting even though he’s almost 27 but he has a huge huge huge flaw he wants to be like Floyd and thats not going to work for him down the road for now Tank is good as long as he keeps fighting people like Jose but he better start making adjustments to his game cuz if not he going to get laid watch write it down somewhere

Present Day Tank is still that dude. My only problem is that his defense needs to be tightened up. Even in the Santa Cruz fight his defense was laxed. Could be because he determines during the fights that the opponent can’t hurt him but I’d like to see him focus on defense a little more because the offense is clearly there

But he also broke him down to the body. Performing well doesn’t mean you’re going to hold up well to the punishment. Y’all lack logic when talking about these things. Stop being so bias. It’s funny how all of tanks weight drained opponents all went up after fighting him but you’re saying he wasn’t drained. Ryan came in twice and got punished for it both times. Same with Rolly And I’m pretty sure that was in rounds…. Oh yeah the first half of the fight where you claim he’s inactive at 😂😂 tank doesn’t have many late stoppages guy. I watched him coming up. @@PremierBoxingChampions me and my friends judge fights by round and not over all damage, so we actually all 5 of us had a draw. Though we were the minority in the house, and I rewatched it but it didn't score it, I do agree with the decision.
