    Hello Hilal. Thank you for the support. I do try to pay attention to details as much as possible. No one is perfect. When I tackle a sizable lesson like this, sometimes little things escape notice until later. I think at one point I mentioned a combination of focus adverb with a noun, but I didn't mean to imply that restrictive adverbs only focus on nouns. Well, hopefully, if there are questions, people will ask! Thanks again for sharing this experience with me.

    I found in a grammar book that adverbs can also modify noun phrases, prepositional phrases, particles, numerals, and measurements: - modifier of noun phrase: 'It came as quite a surprise,' said one. - modifier of pronoun: Almost nobody, it seemed, could eat what they were given. - modifier of predeterminer: I've done about half a side. - modifier of prepositional phrase: But there's a hell of a lot - well into their seventies. - modifier of particle of phrasal verb: It's really filled the room right up. - modifier of numeral: It is still not clear whether the approximately 250 people still listed as missing include those whom ex-detainees say were still alive in May. - modifier of other measurement expressions: Tosi estimates that roughly one-quarter to one-third of the total surface area of four sites in 'prehistoric Turan' was devoted to different craft activities. Is this also correct?

    I debated teaching other points. There wasn't enough agreement about adverbs modifying noun/pronoun phrases for me to move forward. QUITE A + noun was the only example I could find in everyday American English. I think if I make another lesson on adverbs in the future, I'll explore the different uses of each kind. Adverbs of degree can pair with pronouns and measurements as you wrote.

    What an informative and totally enjoyable lesson this is. Jennifer. I got to this one at long last. This wasn't a lesson that could have been watched in a casual manner, so I ensured I made time to take it all in. Despite teaching all these subjects, I still found myself learning new things. The categorization of adverbs was interesting. I just lump them into four main categories as I do have that broad-brush approach as you know. I let the more advanced teachers, like yourself, get into the subject in greater detail.

    Thanks for taking the time to watch all this and digest it. It's a marathon of a lesson. :) The video could have been even longer, but there has to be a limit, right? I like breaking a topic down and showing how grammar works, but I also think there comes a time to put terminology aside.

    It was a total joy to watch. It even beat the Carol Burnett show. I think it is acceptable to generalize in some instances. I really aimed my adverb lessons at those who were learning about them for the first time and openly admit my lessons won't make students experts, but they will teach them the basics. I personally prefer very detailed lessons and love knowing what all the confusing terminology means. Many don't share my passion though. .

    We have to know how far to take students at any given time. It's easier to judge in a live lesson with specific students in front of you. Then we have a better feel for how much is enough. The video is more like an invitation for those who want to take a journey deeper into grammar. :)

    Very true, Jennifer. I just wished our Internet students could interact a bit more. It's all very well showing what we know, but are the learners understanding the lessons? Just like you, I also reply to comments. Sadly, very few of them are questions about my lessons. Maybe a video inviting students to ask questions on English language topics would achieve this. Mmm, I wonder...

    Yes, language is certainly interesting. When I think of "thou" and "thee," I think of old poems and plays. Here's a well-known one with a lot of uses of "thee." www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/how-do-i-love-thee-sonnet-43 I don't think we'll be changing pronouns again anytime soon. We also borrow words from other languages. Try to catch "verboten" in this clip. It's a German word, as I understand. This adjective is in the first minute. Later in the clip you'll hear this bit of slang: "Missy is bank." (subject + verb + complement) The speaker was very impressed with Missy and considered her valuable. Back in 2000, perhaps that's how teens talked. Not sure if that word is used today. Teen movies are great for hearing how open those major word classes are. There's a lot of slang used by youth. In this clip, you'll hear, "I must give her snaps." Which means to give her praise and respect. Again, not sure how many people use "snaps" as a noun with this meaning today. How fun to look at how language changes!

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi. :) Note - Compliment - nice words people say. Example: Your comment about my mole. Complement - grammar term for what can define or identify a word (noun, adjective). Subject + linking verb + complement (The subject complement can be a noun or anything that behaves like a noun OR an adjective. There are other possibilities, but nouns and adjectives are the most common subject complements.) Example - You are kind. ("Kind" is the complement.) Example - You are a good student. ("A good student" is the complement. It's a noun phase.) Follow the links in the video description for more grammar lessons, particularly the one on sentence types.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Good question. The basic sentence is: She is afraid. Then you have information about how or why she's afraid. Adverbs/adverbials can answer those questions. Adjectives only answer "Which one?" or "What kind?" So "of a spider" is functioning like an adverb because it modifies "afraid." Remember: Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

    Dear Jennifer, Can time adverb like "sometimes" be used to modify verb inside a time adverb (WHEN) dependent clause? For example - is below sentence grammatically and logically correct? I am concerned about correctness of presence and placement of the adverb "sometimes". Sentence: John fails his school exams when the discussions in his house about cricket tournament games in his town sometimes distract him from studying.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi. I wouldn't say the sentence is incorrect, but unusual. I think "sometimes" is the only adverb of time that could work in that position. It's more logical to omit "sometimes" and use "whenever." Or you could rephrase it: Family discussions about local cricket games sometimes distract John from studying, and that's when he's more likely to fail a test at school.

    I'm happy you're able to follow this grammar overview. There are two kinds of objects: direct and indirect. Direct objects follow verb: I see YOU. I love HIM. I like PIZZA. I bought MILK. Indirect objects can have two positions. They can be part of a prepositional phrase: to THE PARK, with ME, for YOU, under THE TREE. They can appear without a preposition before a direct object: I told HIM my name. I gave MARY my phone number. So in the example "We went to the park" the prepositional phrase is an adverbial. It just give more information, but it could be left out. The main idea is WE WENT (subject + verb). The verb "go" can be intransitive = without an object. "Park" is the object of the preposition "to."

Dear Jennifer, Can you look at above sentence and tell me the role of modifier phrase "up from less than 1% in 2007". Hi. I see a reduced adjective (relative) clause: According to Mortgage Bankers Association, about 5% of loans are in foreclosure, [which are] up from less than 1% in 2007. > So, you're left with a modifier. It's a phrase that modifies that last fact. Relative clauses can refer back to a single noun or pronoun or to a whole idea.

    I am sorry mam , I don't want to disturb you again and again. but I believe I am not able to ask you what I wanted to ask . whenever we use pronoun we know from context the reference that it make . Also note that we don't have article before it. Most people like to go to northern area, but most don't like to go ... ( from context we are able to understand that most people don't like. But this example isn't clear . I have the most to gain. ( it isn't making any reference, also you could see definite article before a pronoun but in every grammar book explain that we can't use the before pronoun. It would be really helpful if you explain.

    Most people = determiner + noun = Which people? - Most people. (The majority) I have the most to gain. >> "The most" is a pronoun or noun phrase. Different dictionaries label it differently. I don't think the terminology matters as much as understanding the function. It's the object of "have." View "the most" as a unit.
