Start small and then build. Make sure he can write clear sentences. Then teach him ways to organize sentences: by time, by order of importance, by comparing/contrasting, etc. Watch audio books/stories on YT together and talk about the elements of a story: characters, setting, plot, climax, resolution. Talk out short, simple stories together before you ask him to write one. You can also take turns building a story, each contributing a line or two. :) Make it fun! Good luck.

Very well done, Jennifer. The complexity of syntax in English organised in a simple and easy to understand video. "words have a function", and "syntax is ordering of words". The narrations and captions, and the flow diagrams are perfect. We are so lucky to get all this free! (For me, it is a revisit to school days many decades ago. As of now, the lessons provide the frame to me for understanding languages. My current passion is Persian). Looking forward to the remaining two parts.

Hi Claire. I know there are some grammar nuts out there like me. :) I guess you're one of them. But as much as I like grammar, I do believe it's possible to be successful without knowing all the terminology. Learners are different. You may like the live session I offer on Patreon. We have 2+ Zoom sessions every month and one YT livestream where I allows Q&A. I could talk more about the parts of speech. The short explanation is that direct objects are object of verbs. They follow the verb. (see YOU, eat FOOD, drink WATER, learn ENGLISH, etc.) Indirect objects are objects of prepositions. (give a letter to YOU, buy some flowers for YOU) More examples: www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/indirect-object

Some words can belong to more than one category. For example, "another." hi Jennifer, watching your video because I'm re-learning grammar for my Tefl course. Love your calm demeanour and easy to understand explanations. I'm a bit confused about possessive determiners though as they seem the same as pronouns. What actually is the difference?
@Englishwithjennifer
3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Possessive adjectives come before a noun: my, your, his, her, our, their >> my car, your book, etc. Possessive pronouns replace a noun: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs >> This is my pencil. That's YOURS. (yours = your pencil) Pronouns can function as subjects or objects. MINE is yellow. YOURS is white.
Hi,Jennifer. We normally use "more" with adjectives and adverbs...Can we also use it with nouns as in "I would have cooked more food if i had known you are coming"?
@Englishwithjennifer
2 ай бұрын
Yes, it can help us quantify things: a lot of people/more people, many ideas/more ideas. www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/more We use "less" in similar ways: a) worry less (adverb) b) not much time/less time, very little stress/less stress

Hello. First of all, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Second of all, I have some questions: - What is the difference between a noun and a subject? - What is the difference between a phrase and a clause? - Do demonstrative adjectives and demostrative pronouns belong to DETERMINERS? Thanks.
@Englishwithjennifer
5 жыл бұрын
Hello Juan. The subject is what the sentence is about. It can be a person or thing. Nouns are often our subjects, but we can also use pronouns, gerunds, infinitives, and noun clauses as our subject.
@juanfelix5200

@@Englishwithjennifer Ok. Can you tell me if demonstrative adjectives and demostrative pronouns belong to DETERMINERS, please ?
@Englishwithjennifer
5 жыл бұрын
I put demonstrative adjectives in the category of determiners because they go before a noun and they help us identify or determine what or who we're talking about. See 14:31 in this video. However, any kind of pronoun functions like a noun. So pronouns can't be determiners.

Yes, that's true. It could be used with -es, but I feel the irregular form is used more often in American English. When I was in school, we learned "buffalo" as the singular and plural form. Learn a small set of phrasal verbs at one time. Learn in which situations they are often used. Pay attention to the grammar and review regularly. Reading helps pull everything together.
Ma'm kindly give me one or two examples of Verb+determinative = verb phrase

Did you mean a phrase with a determiner? I would see that as VERB + OBJECT. The object can be a noun phrase with a determiner: see the man write a letter try a few tasks

Thank you very much Jennifer,but I have a question: Adjectives possessivs are not determinars ? Because in my opinion I can say my book , not yours . This is her book not your book or his book. I mean here we determine. Thank you again.

Possessive adjectives = possessive determiners: my, you, his, her, its, our, their Yes, they are all determiners. However, possessive pronouns are different: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. They can stand alone in place of a noun. 1) my book = possessive adjective + noun 2) yours = possessive pronoun
I know these topics. I was a teacher myself.basics

Ma'm what's the difference between determiner and determinative?
@Englishwithjennifer

Same thing, I think. I use "determiner." It gets confusing because different sources use different terms.
"1. Do you ever think about living there?" "2. PTV's latest drama serial is about keeping traditions alive." Kindly tell me the part of speech of the word "about" in both the sentences ..
@Englishwithjennifer

ABOUT is always a preposition. I'd say the first prepositional phrase functions more as an adverb ("think") and the second is more like an adjective ("series").
Ma'am u said buffalo are large animals is this sentence is correct. Can we say lion are dangerous animals or we should put s after lion so we can make it a correct sentence.
@Englishwithjennifer
4 жыл бұрын
"Buffalo" can be singular and plural. "Lion" is a regular noun, so you must use -s to form the plural. Some people use "buffaloes," but I personally don't.
Dear teacher Jennifer, why did you say buffalo was a irregular noun? Dictionary says its plural form is buffaloes or buffalo
@Englishwithjennifer
4 жыл бұрын
That's right. It does have a regular form, but the irregular form is used more often in American English.

Hello, is it correct or not? Please explain me( not some people? Can we use pronoun some in negative sentence?
@Englishwithjennifer
4 жыл бұрын
You can use "some people" and a negative verb: Some people don't like to read. Some people aren't interested in history. Etc. This contrasts with "others." >> Some people don't like to read. Others can't live without books.

Hi. It's not incorrect really, just potentially unclear. An English teacher could be one who teaches English literature or English as a second/foreign language.

A good learner's dictionary will give helpful examples. www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/perhaps www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/possibly dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/probably "Perhaps" is less conversational than "maybe." "Probably" is more certain that "possibly." If you can join the KZread member-only live stream on Friday, I'd be happy to talk more about these words. Later in the month, I'll also likely try Hallo for the first time. You can download the app and be ready for that event. :) hallo.tv/

Hi!! Mam I have a question Generally before a proper noun any article is not place but when a proper noun is used as the common noun then article "the" is placed before that proper noun. Plz give an example

Names of people normally don't require articles: Jennifer, George Washington. Some places do: the Philippines, the United States. Is that what you're asking?
Hi Jennifer, Can an infinitive phrase be an antecedant for a pronoun? Example is there a mistake in the following sentence. John loves to bake, and he is an expert at it.
@Englishwithjennifer
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the object pronoun "it" can refer back to baking ("to bake").
Ma'm I have a question, it may sound non-sense but still I'll ask. I am studying one word used as different part of speech. Today a question arose in my mind and that is "can we use a pronoun form as a noun, or can we use a noun form as a pronoun?" For example we can use ing form as verb, as adjective and as a noun/gerund. Can same be the case with Nouns and pronouns?
@Englishwithjennifer
5 жыл бұрын
Pronouns and nouns are completely different parts of speech, but they can function the same way. They can both be subjects or objects. The -ing form of a verb can be a gerund (which behaves like a noun) or a present participle. Does that make sense?
