    Dear Teacher Jennifer, The video lesson of Parts of Speech 2 is incredibly interesting and clear. The way you communicate is kind and friendly attitude. I highly recommend this course to all students of my country. Surely, they will value it. For me, the lesson is a refresh course. I learn some components which I have never been taught before. Of course, they will help me to build strong sentences without any mistakes. By the way, I do hope your summer vacation in South Dakota with your near and dear ones have been a wonderful moment. The photos taken are relevant to the lesson and help us to view some beautiful scenery of Dakota. Thank you so much for all your video lessons ! I enjoy them very much. With best regards, Fazil

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    4 жыл бұрын

    You're welcome. In conversation and casual writing, we can start a sentence with "and" to show it's an addition or continuation. However, in more formal English (professional or academic), we should avoid that pattern. "And" is a coordinating conjunction, so we should use it within a phrase or sentence to combine ideas. This video may help. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6Wmj8Gnna2cZ7Q.html&feature=emb_logo You might also find it helpful to review punctuation with conjunctions. kzread.info/head/PLfQSN9FlyB6Q8MTULKyIHzqKeXpBbxES6

    Masterly..Covers the whole gamut of verbs, adjectives and conjunctions in one breath of 30 mins. It summarizes all her videos on these subjects. Suggest viewers see it in bits of 10 mins. Its dense, it takes time for the full meaning to sink in! (Imagine the work that must have gone into preparing the script, shooting the video with props and then editing it for presentation. and its all done by single hand)

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, definitely watch it in shorter segments. It's very dense, especially if one isn't familiar with the terminology. Thank you for recognizing the time that went into this marathon of a lesson. Part 2 was the longest video I ever made! But the long hours are worth it. The full three-part lesson will hopefully serve as a reference for present and future students and even perhaps teachers in training. :) I'll make a shorter video this week so that we can all catch our breath. Part 3 will come later in the month. Thanks again for your valuable support!

  • @ArunGoyal2007

    @ArunGoyal2007

    No problem with the length, Jennifer. You have to be an artist to handle the long time, the complexity rises exponentially as period lengthens! I saw this part twice, and used pause and replay many times to get the full sense. Even used google to understand some of the terms that were not so clear to me. (At some point in your life, you can consider distilling all this to structure a theory of languages. Like all languages have all parts of speech, but the difference lies in the structure and arrangement. The three part series can be the beginning of this "universal video", the mother. If you master the language theory, you can learn any language... like magic, to use your favourite expression!.)

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Often we use GET + a state: get married, get hurt, get injured, get divorced, get bored, get lost. We can describe people as (being) married, divorced, hurt, lost, etc. These past participles can function as adjectives. A bored expression. A married woman. A lost child. Etc.

  • @sanajaved4996
    @sanajaved49962 жыл бұрын

    Hi ,Jeninifer ! You are doing amazing work🌸 We are told that we used past participle adjective to show someone short period feeling Such as I am interested I am bored And ing form to describe someone or something She is amazing . But I don't understand the past participle adjective in the beolw example . Adjective " based" after linking verbs is not showing someone feeling. Ex: This movie is based on famous novel by Hemingway. Students will have to send regular updates about the status of the tree that they planted, and their degrees will also be based on it. Though , it seems like passive construction but subjects are not recieving action here. So , i don't think it is passive voice.

    Hi, could someone help me please..? in portuguese (my natural language) when we say "homem pobre" (poor man) it means that the man dont have money but when we say "pobre homem" (also translated as poor man) it means a feeling of pity so in portuguese some times the order adjective - noun/noun - adjective modifies the meaning of the sentence... my question is: is there a way to identify the meaning of the sentence (for exemple: he is a poor guy) or is it necessary that it be inserted in a context? (Or am i totally mistaken and both the sentences "poor guy" and "guy poor" exist.) thanks.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    Just FYI - context and intonation would help clarify the meaning of "poor." It has the same meanings in English: (1) little money and (2) pitiful.

    Thank you, Jennifer. So, predicative adjectives are the same as predicate adjectives. With many predicative adjectives the adjective is equal to the subject: He is tall. She is clever. We are excited. The road is long. We can show transition, too: The leaves turn brown in the fall. The activities became more interesting as the weeks went by....Predicative adjectives often have compliments, which give reason for the choice of adjective. I made a lesson on this and wished I had given more examples. I was really just sticking to the simple three and four word sentences like: Cats are nice, English is fun, The road is dangerous, etc.

    Happy New Year! Well, they're not action verbs in the sense that you can picture the action being done, as with RUN, THROW, DANCE, etc. However, causative verbs are transitive and require an object.

    This is a very good lesson, Jennifer. I loved it more than words can say. I wished the order of adjectives was a bit like the acronym we use for the coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). Let's go through them: Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Origin and Material (OSASCOM). How about remembering it like this Osas.com? It might work! No matter how hard I try, I can't fit all seven of these varying adjectives before a noun. I don't think it's possible. In fact, anything over three adjectives before a noun sounds very wordy: Here is an example of a sentence which sounds way too wordy, yet it follows the order correctly: 'The lovely old Victorian oil painting was a joy to behold'...I would write it like this: 'The Victorian oil painting was a joy to behold.' I suppose we could say that an adjective that isn't necessary should be omitted. I call predicative adjectives 'predicate adjectives.' Is that okay?

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, my fellow grammar lover! :) Acronyms are sometimes hard to form. I've seen how some try to use one for the order of adjectives. For me, maybe a little melody would work better. Back in junior high, I memorized the linking verbs to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"! I used another tune when I had to learn all the Confederate states for a U.S. history test. I like your painting example, though it's quite a mouthful! As for the terminology, there's always going to be variation. Even the pronunciation of a single word varies! I heard at least two variations of "predicative" when I was preparing the film. Hope you'll like Part 3.

    Adjectives Modifying Adjectives is the title I'm using for my latest on my adjective series. I will be looking at when commas are needed and when they are not. The order of adjectives acronym may help. 'The big yellow American car was the most impressive one.' A strange and frightening black animal appeared from nowhere. A glorious big apple tree came into view. The classical actor played the part of a sad and lonely man. I spotted a peculiar green, blue and red striped car in the car lot. - The house was impressive, fascinating and enormous..... An opinion, which is optional, followed by the adjective that fits the best will be my advice: An interesting English lesson; A delicious green apple; I bought a black leather jacket yesterday. I improved my English teaching skills. Snooker and pool tables have a smooth green cloth over a heavy slate bed. Oh, it's all good fun, isn't it?

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, showing when a comma is needed is a useful topic. Just be sure to forewarn people to avoid wordiness. A string of adjectives isn't usually the norm. This week I'm going to turn my attention to word parts. That's a pretty big topic, I know. So I'll start really small. ;)

    Hi. That's a complex sentence with the subordinating conjunction "once." It's like saying "when" or "after." First you get equipped. Then you become your own master. The adverb clause (dependent clause) is first. The main clause is second. The meaning is that you must first build a foundation or master the most elementary skills. In which category of clauses we can put correlative conjunctions? Noun, Adjective, Adverb or Independent Clause? I feel these cannot be two independent clauses, even one of the clauses using correlative conjunction doesn't seem to be independent but both seem dependent. For example: He cannot only speak, but also write Japanese. Cannot only speak doesn't make complete sense (as if some contrasting though must follow), but also write means some first thought has been skipped. Kindly guide me.

    Correlative conjunctions belong with all the other conjunctions. They are quite special in their structure, but they're still conjunctions. They can help us combine words, phrases, and even whole clauses. He's not only smart, but also kind. He donated not only money, but also his own labor. Hi. Are you asking about the stative passive? We can break passive verbs into two basic groups: dynamic and passive. Yes, in the dynamic passive, the subject receives the action. In the stative passive, it's just a state. Divided into, known for, related to...are just some examples. We can't rewrite those kinds of sentences with active verbs. Does that make sense?

    You're right that all the examples have a modifier before the head noun (main noun). I was showing compound adjectives or compound modifiers in that segment. The adjectives are formed from more than one word. For example "smoke" is a noun. "Free" is an adjective. The compound word is "smoke-free" (noun + adjective). That compound word modifies "hotel."
