Part 8.5 - UPDATED INFORMATION: Multitrack Recorder & MIDI - Casiotone CT-S1000V In Depth Review

Музыка

Part 8.5 of a series of CT-S1000V review videos.
This is an update video to re-examine the use of MIDI files with the S1000V as new information has come to light since uploading Parts 6 & 7. In those previous episodes I ran into issues with using and recording MIDI, mainly in connection with recording Layers (I incorrectly stated that Layers could not be recorded via MIDI), and also with the MIDI not playing back the Tones correctly when exported into a DAW. It turned out that my specific DAW was the issue and NOT the S1000V, so I want to address the incorrect information I gave out and also demonstrate that the S1000V CAN record layers over MIDI, and you CAN export an S1000V recorded MIDI file, modify/ edit it externally, and then re-import it back into the S1000V for playback (with one caveat). I also demonstrate the issue of ACT DSPs not functioning over MIDI.
TIME STAMPS:

I wish someone would just do a tutorial on how to do a basic multitrack recording to a metronome sound instead of all this esoteric stuff.

I'm a bit disappointed with the recording features... ...could you explain in multitrack mode : what is the interest to copy a track to another track or copy a multitrack to another multitrack? I want to create my own rythm, i brake my teeth on this subject, it seems to be impossible, but I don't know why, the ct-s1000v let the possibility to add rythms on ac7 or ctk file instead of "no data" slot rythm. have you got some tips on these subjects?

I might have a tough question for you. Is it possible to sync the MIDI clocks between my guitar pedal rig and the Casio ct-s1000v without having a computer installed in the mix. Looking for a live looping setup that doesn’t require a computer

thx for the video. in a different video you show how you can map the knobs, k1, k2, k3 using midi to a DAW . are those 3 the only programmable parameters that can be mapped. for example can the expression pedal be mapped to a filter in an arturia vst, or any of the menu buttons on the CT to be mapped to MIDI program changes? thx

Thanks for the compliment! You can also map the pitch bend wheel to a DAW as well as the K1 to K3 knobs. Looking on page 11 of the CT-S1000V MIDI implementation guide, sections 7.7 and 7.8, it appears that when an Expression Controller and/ or Damper Pedal are connected, these will transmit MIDI. Therefore you should be able to map those to a DAW as well. Then on page 353 of the User Guide there is a list of Control Change MIDI parameters that the S1000V can send and receive, and some of these are related to menu buttons. However, these MIDI CCs might only be sent when activating these functions through the S1000V's menu, rather than the buttons themselves sending out MIDI data. My S1000V is currently out of my studio so at present so I can't 100% confirm whether the buttons can be mapped to DAW. Hope this helps!

I personally don't understand the sense or nonsense of the midi standard. I mean presumably each instrument has an ID. Let's take a bass drum as an example is MIDI id #10. Are all compliant midi devices obligated to provide a same or similarly sounding bass drum sound at id #10? What also blew my mind is that I downloaded some midi files and uploaded them to my CTS1000 and they sound like a studio recording. For example, I downloaded the Bladerunner theme by Vangelis midi file, and it sounded exactly like on the movie. Didn't Vangelis use a rather expensive analogue synth for that? How does the Casio replicate that so well? It's not a Synth

Likely the MIDI files you downloaded used the GM MIDI (General MIDI) sound set. This was/ is a standard that goes right back to the 90s, and meant that MIDI files created on one manufacturer's device will play back on a different manufacturer's device with the same sounds, as all GM compatible devices had the same style of Tones in the same patch slots. If the MIDI files used Tones unique to a particular device rather than GM Tones, they won't play back the same way in another manufacturer's device. The Casiotone has the bank of GM sounds among its 800 Tones, but it also has its own unique Tones. Yes, Vangelis used the flagship Yamaha CS80 synthesizer for the Blade Runner soundtrack (he also used it for a lot of the Chariots of Fire soundtrack too). And though the S1000V (and S500) aren't synths in the traditional sense, they have a lot of powerful synth style sounds onboard that can get close to the sound of traditional synths. Plus there are Tone shaping options available thanks to the envelopes, filter and also the Active DSPs.
