as a fener fan im routing for panathinaikos (obviously behind fener). although most fener fans hate ergin ataman, i do not. i appreciate him and pana is my favourite team in greece anyway.

Firstly, Pana is at +41 in total + - points comparing to Barcelona and in the 3 upcoming fixtures its quite imposibble for Barca to close the gap. So its like Pana took the difference that they wanted, even if they just tied the first's game difference. Yes, Ataman needs money (like almost all big name coaches) but Pana has lower budget than Armani Milan, Partizan and the same with Efes. All these teams are fighting for a position in play in. Also, Pana is above all euroleague teams that they have same or bigger budget at this moment except Real Madrid that has a huge budget, close to 35mil. They are 6th in team budget but 2nd in Euroleague right now. Its not just about having money. We all have seen teams with huge budget fail at the end of the season or at the end of their overall project. All these, in just 6 months, with a whole new team (11-12 new players). Money helps, expertise wins.

You talk like Panathinaikos isnt a team that has 6 euroleagues, only Real and CSKA has more..one of the most historic clubs in europe, Barchelona has 2 for example..

I'm starting to think you believe ΠΑΝΑΘΗΝΑΙΚΟΣ to be a newly found club and not a 6 times euroleague winner, with the last being 2011. Ataman came and made a team out of nothing and this year wasn't even supposed to be a team fighting for an advantage but rather simply managing to be in the top 10 and surpassed that. I think you have a bitter taste about ataman, but what it works works and right now this playstyle makes the number 2 team in europe. Don't forget guys, euroleague isn't 10 years old and pao and oly are traditional powerhouses.

@@Gerschy terrible spelling but I'll answer. Pana the last 3 years was terrible, bottom 4 team and had an issue with euroleague (euroleague mafia). The owner decides to revive the team and build a new roster and restore the former glory of the club hiring the most successful coach of the last seasons. With the exception of sloukas, who was the torch in order to attract more "big names", the other big names before Nunn are hernagomez and vildoza. We imagined that the former 2 would be much better, but 3 games before the playoffs have the least an underwhelming performance and receiving rumors about trading with Mario for juancho and releasing the contract for Luca. If money could make a team, we wouldn't have examples like cska Moscow and the other Russian teams, last 2 years efes and Armani, and of course Barcelona. The coach build a team he wanted, and if juancho and vildoza where up to their normal standards the addition of Nunn might not have happened at all. All things considered for a first year the team has performed exceptionally, more than thought but again... what works works and right now pana is 2nd. (OH yeah don't forget the hostile referees behaviour, e.g. : half court violation with barca, overtime loss against maccabi and so go on).

The last time PAO made it to play offs was not in Xavi Pascual era but in first season of Pitino who took over from Pascual somewhere in the end of November in season 2018-2019.

Ι could name a few teams, more expensive than PAO. Besides Real and Barca, Armani and Monaco's budgets currently are definitely higher. Maccabi and Fener are close if not slightly lower than PAO in those terms. Partizan and Oly are lower but just 3-4 mil behind and by no means, financially weak. So how do we attribute PAO's success this year solely to their budget? Why are we acting as if 20mil is something we have never seen in the League? It might be a record for PAO, but they didn't break the game. Real, Barca, CSKA, Fener have been inflating the League this past decade and a hald with their wages. Don't make it sound otherwise. We get it, you don't like PAO, but it's ok. The one responsible for the greens' success in coach Ataman and none other.

You have to understand that the Urbonus podcast is about basketball in general, not about Panathinaikos or Greek basketball. Even though the guys doing this podcast are Lithuanians, the time devoted to Zalgiris isn't even close to one-tenth of the time devoted to Greek teams. I am also Greek and supporter of Panathinaikos, like you are, but I don't think that the world revolves around me, my team or my country (like you and those who liked your comment do).

So even with small budget Yugoslavia teams had a best Europe players.Partizan wining in 1992 were not big surprise. After that in spain, italy, Greece he played with biggest stars and budget.

Ataman ended up having huge budget in his final years with Efes because several players’ value skyrocketed under him. For example, how much were Misic and Larkin getting paid when they first signed with Efes and how much did they end up getting AFTER they had won under Ataman??

Money plays the roll, of course it does. Last year he didnt have that much luck, this year there are clubs that have rubber pockets (Milano, Serbian teams) that possibly will be left outside the play in. What does it say: some luck is needed, being able to manage egos too, as well as chosing right egos pre season and get the right people during the season if needed. All good, its a professional basketball. Compare it with 100meters running where the last and the first place is half a second apart, little details that matter. Zalgiris when they took a 3rd place in Euroleage had private flights and Saras said that it will give them couple victories extra. Little things. Or big. Ataman wouldnt have been a champ with alba, he needs money. He might have been champ with Armani though or Monaco

We all put Pao in 6-10 positions before they sign Nun who changed their season . Plus Pao and Real are the only teams that are better from previous year. Teams from 2nd to 6th are really close and Pao had all the luck .The foull called on Davis in the last seconds againt the home team is so rare to see and i wont even talk about the Okombo free throw who failed to hit the rim even if he doesnt even need to miss . Fener are playing really well right now with Saras but the same team last year started playing great and suddenly stopped .Will they have a breakdown again? i believe Saras is more skilled than Itoudis but im a little bit skeptical. Partizan manage to replace the fantastic Exum with Dozier who is ok, but Cabolco and Kaminski are so bad defensively that makes them look like they missed Gobert not Lessort .

Itouidis represents his skills in play-off’s, f4 or on final, on the other hand Saras is a great season coach. I prefer Itouidis as a Fenerbahce fan but lets see Saras in play-off series or in f4.

PAO is definitely not lucky. I have to remind you the 3 games they lost on OT even though they were better than their opponents in all of them and they choked in the 4th quarters and also the games against Baskonia and Efes that they lost by one shot.

If Llul had stepped into his shoes and slipped we would have been lucky that day . Im not using it in a disrespectfull way , i wish my team have all the luck . Teams from 2nd to 6th may end up with the same record or a win + - . Details will determine the home court adv and luck is very important . Second place for me is 95% guaranteed f4 and now you have it in your hands .

@@ogerousiastis1898 I understand, but you're using that Monaco game as an example while you could also mention the game against Maccabi in Athens were in the last seconds there were 2 wrong calls in favor of Maccabi that were extremely crucial. You can go back and check it yourself If you don't believe me. And then, how about Olympiacos home game against Partizan and those bad calls in favor of your team in the last minutes of the game? Wasn't that a decisive factor as well?

I would love the Olympics to be at 16 teams, since the average international level is now so high. If not, the old 6-team format was better than this thing with three groups.

I have no problem with your Panathinaikos hate, but i have problem with your ignorance. Vildoza was injured for more than a month and he had just one practice. You don't know the criteria for teams that they have the same wins and the same points in theirs games? This is embarrassing. Bad show bad level of knowledge.

They gained the tie breaker cause they are 41 points better than Barca

augustas is always to the point. part of Pao's big success is kendrick nunn. without him pao would have been fighting in the play in spots. of course ataman has made a very good job to absorb him in his playing style. He has also built a team that is playing very good defense(especially in the home games) that is really surprising and is also indicative of what coach ataman is capable of as a coach. of course we cant defy the luck factor since Pao has been able to get away with some wins against the odds(Monaco-Valencia away matches)and some some gifts from other teams (monaco loosing to Milano, Real playing indiferently). these facts cant really cancel the great work of Ataman. one thing is yet to be seen is the limited rotation and how and if this will affect them in the playoffs qnd the greek league.

They give credit where credit is due. Panathinaikos went from 17th to the second place of euroleague. You are just used to your team being favored by the greek media because the team and the media have the same owner. Also in Greece only the cup is decided not the league. For someone who claims to have deep knowledge and experience in the game, you sure seem to luck info.

Panathinaikos has a very good team but how can this team survive with so limited rotation? Ataman had at least in efes up to 8 players and now things got even worse. I want to play with them so badly this year like 96-97 season.

Ataman is more into narrow rotations as well as he played with 8 players in Efes, each player had 35 minutes per match and he had the title 2 years in a row. A several injuries may end the season for Pao.
