    Great video as always. Some notes: - MPS and FE are based in Poland. TA Publishing is in France. - I doubt they're going to do anything with the voice acting since there isn't any reference material on Panzerese that could be used to record new dialogue. They'd have to do it all by ear and risk getting words wrong. - As bad as the blue dragon's homing lasers sound, the dark dragon's booming laser attack sounds even wimpier. :\

    Saturn Memories Thanks Mr Memories! Yeah, definitely missing some of those deep, bass heavy sounds in Remake. The location of MPS is confusing. I’m seeing some websites say it’s in France, while others say MPS S.A. is in Poland. FE is for sure in Poland.

    Off all the things I've said, you picked that 🤣🤣🤣 Side note, I know I've recieved a ton of flack from some for my "review", which really isnt even a review. But like I said there, I really do hope they can make this into the very best iteration of Panzer Dragoon to date. Those controls though, no sir...

    You're a legend, Nick. Such a researched and entertaining review, as always, and with the perfect dash of The Walrus to top it off. I agree with the sentiment, though after playing through the remaster and being frustrated with the laggy triggers and the dragon too often obstructing what I'm trying to see on screen, I went back to the Saturn version and I don't think I can go back. The Saturn game, even still, plays so damned well - when you lock on, it registers instantly and fairly with a less precision required than the remaster. Moreover, the camera rotation is quicker and smoother, making it much easier to manage. And as dated as the graphics are on the Saturn, I still think the art direction has more personality and style than the populated but basic worlds in this new one. I'm happy the new one exists, and I'll always support projects that aim to revive SEGA's classic IPs, but the best thing about this remaster was how it reminded me just how good SEGA's original was, and still is, and it's given my Saturn a whole new workout lately going through it all over again.

    PD on the Saturn still looks absolutely gorgeous. An ethereal mix of colors; such as copper, jade and onyx. You can't describe the colors as 'blue, green and brown' because they genuinely feel like beautiful minerals jutting out from the sea bed like a planet abandoned. The PC version especially looks absolutely incredible. So why the fuck does the remake look so awful? Why is it when these remakes come out, they think that upping the polygon count is a replacement for art design? I am not shitting on Sega by the way, Sony are guilty of these also with the abysmal Shadow of the Colossus. Another game remade without any consideration for the original art design. Great art direction will never age and yet it seems to be the thing that is so easily ignored in remakes. I can't think of any remakes that genuinely stay true to the original vision. The only ones that succeed are the ones that try something completely different because they know there is no way to recreate the magic that made the original so good (FF7 for instance). I understand porting a Saturn game is absolutely painful (just look at the cotton rereleases) but PD was released on PC with the Saturn card! Are you telling me you couldn't get a team together to port the PC version with hi-res textures and wide screen to switch? It would have looked glorious if done right. Treasure ported Radient Silvergun to the XBOX360 with enhanced graphics options and it's a fucking masterpiece. They should have given this to them. I'm sad.

    The developers completely fucked up a port of a relatively simple game. They can't be trusted with the superior Panzer Dragoon Zwei. It should be given to M2 or Sumo Digital who we know would do it justice.

  • @acecarrera1
    @acecarrera13 жыл бұрын

    The reality may not be as simple as what I'm about to say, but with classic game remake like this, I just want to see it in modern graphics and leave everything else alone.Honestly, even the original still looks great today, because the developers maximized its potential within the hardware limit.One game I would like to see in current generation console is Road Rash 64, because it's an awfully good game that desperately needs decent graphics.

  • @GhaleonEB

    Thanks for such a great in depth review. As usual your your videos are very thoughtful and well put together. I pre-ordered the physical Switch version of PD Remake from LRG and ended up exchanging it at my local game shop without playing it. I really despise how the remake looks - the colors choices in the first level were not a limitation of the system, it was a decision based on the tone of the game. Panzer Dragoon is a somber series, and painting it with bright colors completely misses that tone. Beyond color I strongly disliked the overall art direction, sound effects, dragon animation and design and overall presentation. I never played it but read a great deal about the controls issues you had with it. I still have my Saturn hooked up and just played the original again instead. I think the developers fundamentally did not understand what made Panzer Dragoon special. Combined with the rushed release (which appeared to tank the sales, and doom the Zwei remake as well) this project was not handled with the care the series deserved.

    My feeling is that the spirit is the same but the vibe is different. It’s difficult for me to articulate but you can’t replicate the atmosphere of Saturn games on new hardware. The limitations of the time give it a unique feel, as well as the era it was born into. If that makes sense

  • @PotbellyPunch
    @PotbellyPunch4 жыл бұрын

    one of the things nobody is talking about is how in the original if you tapped the fire button, it wouldn't just fire a single shot. It was like a burst shot. You got several shots for each button press. The newer game your gun fires slower when tapped and it just feels awful. I wanted to like this but I simply cannot play it. It hurts my head to try to figure out the finicky lock on controls and the rapid fire is so slow no matter how fast you tap the button. The dragon is too large on screen and the reticule makes no sense.

    As a newcomer to the series I was impressed it needs work but I will say the art is very faithful and for a game with its source code having been lost this remake is pretty impressive in that one regard the chapter 1 and 2 definitely could of gotten more work done on them in terms of visuals Chapter 3 and 6 are absolutely beautiful controls work but need refined I also think they could of added a bit more and maybe even make the story make sense for example maybe even make it a separate mode the second level should technically be the first level because the intro leaves off at the desert and the first level should be the 5th one as the ruins are seen closer to the city of chapter 6 The Dragons wings are to stiff in my opinion the dragon could of looked better however the Black Dragon is perfect also I see your a spyro dude a man of culture

    I couldn't stand the modern controls, myself. I switched to classic, immediately. One thing that I found weird is that selecting the classic reticle made aiming an absolute chore. It just isn't accurate. I don't get why the closer camera is the default. I didn't care for having to pull it back at the start of every level. Definitely should have been a menu option. Also, I found the final boss laughably easy. Surprised to hear you say it was even remotely difficult. All you have to do is be extremely aggressive, spamming single shots like crazy in between lock-on beam barrages, and he goes down before he has the chance to drain your health.

    I actually really like the new sound of the arrows of light. But I also have no nostalgia for the original. The remake introduced me to the franchise. Also the infantry on the deck of boss 1 were in the original. They're just sprites, but they're there. The camera rotation is triggered when the button is released, rather than pressed. The dodge roll in Dark Souls works the same way. I imagine this was done to avoid misinputs when rotating the camera 180 degrees by pressing both shoulder buttons. I gotta say I also really like the new compositions. I think that they can stand on there own because of the stylistic differences, and in that way they can match the originals because let's be honest it's very rare that remixes ever replace the originals. I also noticed that the remixes have a more technological feel to them. For example the synth section in "flight" that plays while you're inside the central building right before the boss. I think it works given the technological theme that runs throughout the series. I hope that Saori also composes for the Zwei remake. I'm itching for a new arrangement of "the unexpected enemy". Another thing you forgot to mention is that the new patch added new hit sounds for the arrows of light, and that the dragon's hurt screech was changed. I also think that the opening cutscene replaced one of the camera shots after the rider boards the dragon, and I also think that the cutscene before episode 6 also had a small change. Nevertheless, good review, I'm also anticipating the next few patches. But I wouldn't say the remake is a total loss. The Steam version will probably receive mods that change the visuals and sound, maybe even gameplay changes. Any chance you'll cover the future patches?

    I'll have to strongly disagree with you on art direction. It objectively hits entirely different notes, if you subjectively enjoy that - that's another story. But it carries the shiny glib pastiche vibes of a disney VHS cover rather than any kind of japanese interpretation of franco-belgian art.

    Are you sure the Sonic 2006 team didn't put this together? You know, I completely forgot about this as I was so swept up in gaming on the next generation consoles. That was a hellish undertaking that consumed most of my 2020 (it's a long story). It does however have a great ending as we (fiancee and I) secured both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 *physical at launch. We did it totally on the level through a GameStop hold the scalpers. ;) At any rate, I have always wanted to play this and I'm hoping it's now fixed as it's been a year. By any chance have you played it recently? I'm hoping by now it is fixed.

    @@PandaMoniumReviews Thank you for the excellent reply. I have loved the Panzer Dragoon series since the first time I laid eyes on it. It was quite literally the first game I played to ring in the new 5th generation. I bought a Sega Saturn and PlayStation the day Sony launched their console. When I got them home the only thing I cared about was my Saturn. My brand new launch PlayStation sat on the floor of my bedroom unopened because I wanted to, no needed to finish Panzer Dragoon first. Too me, it was a true tour de force that looked hands down better than anything else out at the time. The music was absolutely sublime and so clear. Panzer Dragoon was such an experience in '95 that I thought Sega was poised to smack everyone around. Yes, their advertisements were batshit insane but this too me was the proof the Sega Saturn had the goods to deliver and that was its starting point. Unfortunately, not many people gave it a chance...

    I've one thing to say: Panzer Dragoon Orta 4K on the Xbox One X. Five seconds of that game put this oversaturated cheap plastic toy looking mess to shame. And that's before considering major problems like the shadows having a seizure at 16:30 or the poor drawing distance. Maybe if Panzer Dragoon had never gotten a sequel I could understand the argument that this is what the world was intended to look like all along without the technical limitations. But it did get sequels, and it did go on into the next generation where they could go all out with their vision, which looks nothing like this.
