Panasonic S-VHS Deck NV-SV121 Power Supply Fix and 43-second Jet Rewind Test

Ғылым және технология

I bought this deck on eBay as Faulty; the seller said it doesn't power on, and sure enough it was completely dead. No signs of life at all.
Luckily, the fault was very obvious to spot and relatively easy to fix.
In this video I also test Panasonic's claim that the machine can rewind an E-180 cassette in just 43 seconds.
Thanks to Retro Electrical Repair for his superb video on a very similar deck:

Thank you for sharing such a detailed repair video. In fact, the mechanics and circuits are more optimized and simpler than the old VHS recorders. The rewind speed is really fast. I believe the head is also wear-resistant. In fact, the 10v electrolytic capacitor replaced is a 5v filter capacitor in the stand by circuit. Because the machine is not disconnected from the power plug and the power supply is in standby state for a long time, it is a capacitor that is easy to fail.

I found the Australian variant of this same VCR and the same capacitor was blown. Love an easy fix!

Cool video. Subscribed. I recently bought a Japanese version of this machine, the NV-SB150B. It has a really good picture, perhaps the best I've seen, including some very expensive pro VHS editing decks. One thing I discovered is the transport will not work if any stray light hits the sensors, and that happens pretty much whenever the cover is off. If you run it with the cover off, it will try to play the tape without wrapping it around the drum! (My video suite has a lot of natural daylight during the day, that may be why mine did that and yours did not.)

Thanks. Yes a lot of video recorders have problems with ambient light. It can make troubleshooting difficult because you sometimes need to observe what the mechanism is doing, but it then behaves erratically due to the ambient light.
