Back in the 80s and 99s I used to work in merchant banking in the city of London, all trader phone (and other voice circuits) were continuously recorded during the working day, so there were many entire racks filled with this sort of recorder, and although I never came across these particular units, devices using vhs tape were common. It was someone’s job to change the tapes daily on these dozens of recorders. As noted elsewhere in the comments, that’s an RJ21 on the back, up to 25 x balanced 600 ohm line level feeds per connector, using a 25 twisted pair cable. Of course these machines are all ancient history with hard disk recording rapidly becoming the norm, the real advantage of which was not the end of swapping and storing a months worth of tapes, but same day playback, rather than having to wait for swapsies to recover the wanted tape.

Interesting experiment! Regarding the S/PDIF input the following. The Copy Prohibit flag is always high when this input is used. A digital copy is only possible with a source that allows digital copying. The digital output of a consumer CD player always has that flag high. The digital output of the CD player can be modified. But it is also possible to modify the digital input of the 601, allowing unlimited digital copying. I once did that to one of my 601s and it worked fine. It is recommended to connect the video transmitter to the Copy output of the 601. Then the best result is obtained. When a tape without copy prohibition is played and the Copy key is pressed, a stable and error-corrected video signal is presented to the copy output.

90 whole days warranty on the video heads! You're spoiling us, Technicolor!! Far too generous! 😂. Completely unrelated, but my first job was with Technicolor - "Technicolor Videocassette" - a huge VHS tape duplication plant in the UK. Probably most of the pre-recorded tapes sold/rented in the UK were produced at that plant. No Technicolor equipment, of course, aside from a broken "Showcase" that sat on a shelf of junk. Mostly JVC BR-7000 and some Panasonic AG-6810 duplicators, for the geeks who care about such things 😊

I was kind of hoping you'd stretch the link a lot further. What would be interesting now that you've put the vid onto KZread, can we take the YT video and feed it back into the F1 and decode the audio, as in finally HiFi sound via KZread.

Nice setup, I have a few of these 2.4GHz video senders, the biggest problem is that radio band has mostly been taken over by WiFi making them kind of useless. I setup one to transmit the output of a computer, and received it by a handheld receiver/LCD monitor, boy does the picture break up as I move away from the transmitter. I shut down my WiFi, but it was not much better as everyone around me, neighbours etc, all have WiFi.

Its a shame Teac didn't develop further in this unit in to like 10 track stereo recorder that could be used as a home studio recording system or even 20 track like you mentioned. instead we had only four or eight track availability. To use at the time video tape was just excellent idea witch was available globally everywhere all sizes and types of it including High end tapes like mastering types. Tape Speed of the unit could be much higher with different speed variety you could choose from for different quality or tape types. Anyway i just fought to make a point here cos this TEAC seems very interesting little unit that got stuck only to record low quality voice . Thank you for showing and explaining, must say never seen it before 🙂

The tape label and the sleeve give a copyright date of 1996, but this comment prompted me to look at the tape a bit more closely. I'm now sure this is actually an American re-release of the original UK release, and they have just converted the UK PAL version to NTSC, which goes some way to explaining the awful quality. The original release date of 1988 also explains the 1980s home computer graphics. How this American tape made its way to the UK to be found among a batch of UK PAL tapes I don't know.

Thank you for sharing such a detailed repair video. In fact, the mechanics and circuits are more optimized and simpler than the old VHS recorders. The rewind speed is really fast. I believe the head is also wear-resistant. In fact, the 10v electrolytic capacitor replaced is a 5v filter capacitor in the stand by circuit. Because the machine is not disconnected from the power plug and the power supply is in standby state for a long time, it is a capacitor that is easy to fail.

This device was first seen. Although it used VHS tapes, the playback and recording methods were cassette tapes. Because it only recorded 3Khz human voice audio, the sound quality requirements were not high. So he designed to reduce the tape speed to achieve the goal of using a VHS tape to record 10 channels of audio at the same time for a long time (10 heads working at the same time).

I would try to use some Ampex 102 1/2" heads, thicker capstan rod, etc to have at least 3 3/4 ips. This is very sad that tons of VHS will be recycled at a time they could play some analogue music. Or this will be interesting to speed it x10 up to 4.96cm/s, because these heads seem to be very promising in terms of a gap width. If they are able to record 3kHz at 0.5cm/s than this must be 30kHz at 5 cm/s
