Pairing Garmin Edge with Shimano Steps

Спорт

Video walk through pairing and using a Garmin Edge Display unit with a Shimano Steps E-Bike system. Applies to Garmin Edge 530, Garmin Edge 830, Garmin Edge 1030, Garmin Edge 1030 Plus, Garmin Edge Explore.
Shimano Electric Bike Systems are certainly enhanced by this upgrade and being able to see the dynamics in real time is a great feature.

Thanks for the video! Can you see power output of rider with the Shimano Steps system?

Thanks for the video, it's the clearest example I've seen so far. One question that's been bugging me about the specific data screens with this (and other) eBike integrations is whether the information obtained on the special screen is also then shared on others. For example will the cadence from the eBike feed onto cadence fields on other screens such as a navigation screen. Similarly does it feed into the AVERAGE cadence fields on other screens?

Hi DTSquared. Yes, once the information is "in" your device you are free to display it how you like. I've just double checked this using your example of cadence and I can show my cadence on any screen I select cadence to be on. Hope that helps, and thanks for the feedback. Gareth

I only get 4 data fields on my edge 1030 plus. How can I add additional data fields? I have an Orbea Rise M20, 2022 model.

Great video, thanks. Two questions if you don't mind. I have an Orbea Urrun with the EP8 motor and SC-EM800 display, will the SC-EM800 connect to a suitable Garmin GPS without the d-fly unit? I also have a Garmin Edge 820 which Garmin say is not compatible, it does have an ebike sensor option, I have been unable to get it to connect but have read of others managing to make it work? Thanks.

Hi Sam, I missed this question so sorry for the late reply. Yes absolutely this should connect to a suitable Garmin head unit as it comes, without the need for a d-fly add on. The edge 820, however won't as far as I know. You may well be able to download the "skins" for the e-bike to the system, so it looks like the info will display, but I don't think the unit will actually pair with the bike, so the readings will remain blank. If you have any info on how others have made it work I would love to read it.

@@wecycle384 Thanks for the reply. I only have the other internet based suggestions, none of which I've been able to make work so I guess I'll look into buying an Edge 830 instead.

Another question (I thought I'd asked this before), Can I use cadence and speed from the Shimano Steps on my main screen or will it only show on the ebike screen?

@@sam.spoons7186 Hi Sam, a faster reply this time, and actually a question already asked in the comments by another viewer, so I'll just copy and past my previous answer: Yes, once the information is "in" your device you are free to display it how you like. @@wecycle384 Yes, brilliant thanks. Much of the stuff on the ebike specific screen is stuff I don't want/need available all of the time and I dislike the inefficient use of space on the ebike screen. I'll go ahead and buy a more recent computer then. 👍

Does it have to be paired every time you turn on the Garmin or once done it automatically pairs?

Hi, Good question. After you have paired and set it up as in this video, it should automatically pair each time you turn them on.

Hi Florentino. The Garmin uses either Bluetooth or Ant+ to communicate with other devices, so without either of these it won't be able to talk to the bike. d-fly parts can be fitted and it is quite easy to do, so it should be possible to get your bike talking to your Garmin without too much fuss.

Hi, thanks for the question. Couple of things to check. Does the bike have the d-fly junction as in the video, or does it have a display screen? Have you been able to pair the bike to your phone via the Shimano E-Tube app? Finally, is the bike still plugged into the charger? (if it is, please unplug it).

@@wecycle384 it has the junction, I’m able to pair it with the app without any problems. It’s not charging. It connects to the Garmin randomly. Sometimes it connects, sometimes not. I’m wondering if I should contact Garmin or the LBS where I bought the bike. :)

@@florden It is pairing to your phone so the bike is probably doing it's thing correctly. Getting these things "talking" to each other can often be a bit of a faff. I don't know a definite fix, but if you haven't already I would make sure the Garmin has the latest firmware downloaded. I would then remove anything from the list of sensors that could be the bike. Turn it off and then when you turn the Garmin back on you would be essentially starting afresh, and set then bike up as a new sensor. This has worked for me in the past (I seem to get this problem with HR monitors quite often), but if it doesn't help then take your chances with Garmin support / your LBS. Good luck!

I guess this also uses the LEV profile as the specialized bikes. Doesn't it really provide the (riders input) power? That would be a shame since this is such an interesting parameter during and after riding to analyze the performance. Can any Orbea owner clarify here what really is provided?

  • @wecycle384

    @wecycle384

You are right, it isn't giving you power in watt in the same way a standard power meter would. Probably not a huge bit of development for them to be able to provide this so I wouldn't be surprised if this feature arrived in future software updates.
