Painting the Widened Steelies

It's amazing how widened painted steelies can look so good, on such a not good looking vehicle.

In the past, on custom rims, I have balanced just the rim by itself by either grinding the rim, or adding a spot of weld. This gets the rim, perfectly balanced. Then you only have to worry about the tire.

I've even gone so far as to re-balance brake drums and rotors.

Heard good things about Del-Fleet, nice to see you using epoxy primer. From one automotive teacher to another using equipment after hours is not mooching, it's a fringe benefit. Offsets your not so great salary, just south of the Rainy River here you can't find a "shop teacher", so no, use the equipment to offset a teacher's salary in this time of hyper inflation. Another good video and they make that car look much better which wheels and tires often do.

I think the mooching after hours offsets the work I do at home for the school. It sucks when your hobby is what you teach (grin). I painted my entire '61 Apache in DelFleet.

I put a hinge on the glass panel frame so I can flip it up and tape a clear plastic liner on the inside. Cheaper and easier than changing the glass. And its easier to load the parts too. Love the wheels.

That little miller mask is my go to. Fits under my welding hood without issue and higher quality protection.👍

The only suggestion I could add is if you would seam seal the wheel centre to the ring after epoxy. I have found they last much longer and the rust and or rusty water does not climb out of that area. I have also used silicone to do this as well on the cheep white trailer rims. It worked well

The wheels came out real nice. They certainly do fill out the wheel wells when on the car. I don't know if I could wait until spring to try them out though!

It sucks that all the snow is rapidly melting - I want to put the wheels on this weekend, but I know that as soon as I do, there will be another dump of snow.

Hey bud this is Cousin Eddie (aka Tx Firefighter). You might consider some of those window liners from TP Tools to protect your blast cabinet windows. I use my cabinets a lot so and get many years out of a window. The protectors have self adhesive strips around the edges to adhere them to the glass lens. Works good. You can even seal them to the lens better with painters tape around the perimeter. Eh.

I've used those in the past, but I found the inevitable collection of debris inbetween annoying. I never thought to double tape them - I'm going to try that!

I have a powder coating gun and oven, but I'm not convinced I am in love with powder coating. I've seen too many instances where the coating is compromized and it all rusts out from underneath. Paint is relatively easy for me to deal with after the fact.

You lined up the dot on the tire what is the deal with those dots?

Tire manufacturer determines the dot to be the best spot to place on wheel/tire orientation for balancing. Less time, less weight in theory.

@@GregWellwood The good news I suppose is that you're actually 6mm closer to proper offset than the banded 14s if I've done the math right in my head. I'm still pondering wheel choices for that 5lug brake swap so this is good info, thanks.
