Painting better gouache portraits + I made brushes!

Watching you paint portraits really encourages me to push through the ugly phase in my paintings. Because you reach this point so many times in your painting that I would personally give up on and tell myself it's not going well. But you just keep going and end up make beautiful paintings.

gouache is a major "trust the process" medium for sure. I abandoned so many paintings before finally accepting it and pushing through. eventually I realized most of my paintings won't start looking right until about halfway through and the base layer only needs to be semi accurate colors/values

I'm really glad my videos encourage you to push through the ugly phase! 😄 I completely agree with the other commenter that gouache is a "trust the process" medium. In my opinion, the 'ugly stage' is a necessary part of the process. The layers underneath serve as a foundation for the layers on top, making the ugly stage an intentional step in the process. I hope that makes sense! ❤️
I am so happy you got your own brushes Emily. 😊❤ I recently got into Gouache because of your channel. I appreciate you for making all the amazing videos that are very helpful to me. Thank you. 🥹❤

Thank you so so much 💗 Your comment really made my day!
How you use values in your paintings is incredible! I really love how you create blocky shapes first before defining the portrait 💓
I love how you use colour in your work; I find myself constantly inspired by you, and learn so much from your videos! Your brushes are also gorgeous! Will they be available internationally? Thanks :)

Thank you so much!! So happy to hear that you learn from my videos 💖 My brushes with Craftamo will ship internationally 😄
Omg I don't know how can you manage with the value change of dry vs wet gouache!! It drives me nuts!! I think I'll stick to acrylics even if I don't like the glossy finish 😅
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
It used to drive me crazy as well! You seriously do get used to it though. I find I barely notice it now, I can kinda predict the value shifts! I totally understand going back to acrylics though. Maybe you can try adding matte mediums to your acrylics to reduce shine? 👀

@@emhuesart I'll keep on trying, I can't let my Holbein tubes go dry... But I'll look into the matte medium just in case lmao 😭🙏
I’ve just recently started painting with gouache, I’m 3 paintings in and I’m already realizing there’s a lot to learn. Everytime I watch one of your videos I learn a lil something new with each one. Thanks for posting these.

That's so great to hear! I'm glad gouache hasn't scared you off yet. It can be tricky at first, but it's such an amazing medium 💛
I‘m so excited for these brushes. And i love your way of Using „Boxy“ Shapes to create volume. Thats so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your Art and knowledge with us🥰
Lovely video Emily!!!! 💖💖💖✨✨ I used the second's drawing reference for an oil pastel painting this week, it's very nice to see more experienced artists use the same reference and learn from you!!!

I also used the same reference that you did for the second portrait! Lol I recognized the reference in the thumbnail and I'm like, it's a small world in the world of Pinterest references for portrait painting/sketching 🤣 I also used gouache which by the way, you are the whole reason I started painting portraits in the first place. For some reason, I felt really inspired to start painting recently after watching your videos, which hasn't been something I felt for a long time! I think I already commented on this before, but I was searching for someone with a similar art style that I would like to have. And you've been that person for me! Thank you for inspiring me & congrats on your new brush set Emily! 💙
I’ve never tried using a watercolor pencil to sketch before painting. I’m definitely giving it a try!

I always enjoy watching your videos, particularly the gouache studies. I'm excited about your brushes - how cool is that?? I'll be looking out for them. You spoke of "Imposter Syndrome" and I think that probably plagues most of us sometimes. And not trying to tell it to "shut up" but listening to to what might be beneath it - that's good advice. There was an episode on Hidden Brain podcast that talked about that sort of thing - fascinating. Anyway - love your gouache heads - I've got much to learn! Thank you!
I am always more then happy to encourage a Canadian artist. Please let me know how they work with oil painting. Love the look of the brushes. Already on the list. BTW.... You ARE a very good artist with intelligent projects in my opinion. Regards.
I don’t know if you can change much about the brushes but if it’s possible to have longer handles that would be amazing 😭 i know a lot of people prefer short handles but for something like gouache I feel like there’s a shortage of good longer handle brushes on the market. I don’t mean brushes that have a foot long handle but just an extra inch or two would make them better for painting on an easel and stuff they way people paint with acrylic and oil. I hope other people agree with me :,)
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
I hear you! 🩷 I prefer this handle length for gouache, as I tend to sit down to use this medium. I prefer longer handles for oils though! I find you can still hold these brushes at the end to get loose brushwork, but I could see how they're on the shorter end for standing up 😊 Hamrib's Craftamo brushes have longer handles and are lovely!
@artelisx
Ай бұрын
Watercolor and gouache brushes usually have denser bristles so they could hold more water. It’s for this same reason that’s why they’re handles are usually shorter. Watercolor and gouache are usually painted on a flat table due to their watery nature. If it’s at an angle like on an easel, the water would drip down. Gouache can also be painted thickly, and you can paint on an easel. In that case, you can use a synthetic acrylic brush for that purpose. The bristles are less dense, but you don’t need that density anyway because you’re painting thickly. Another note, it’s not good to paint too thickly with gouache because they’re more prone to cracking in thick layers than acrylic.
I love the way the brushes perform! I would love to know when the brushes come out to your online store, it would be great to have them❤

My ma likes to watch your videos with me, and she and I have a question: what would you call the style of painting you use? (I hate to sound like one of those ai losers lol) I'm trying to use acrylic gouache to get back into painting but don't know where to look for styles such as yours 🥺 It really inspires me since I struggle w/ perfectionism and the way your marks aren't finnicky- but rather intentional- is so satisfying to watch !! 🧡🧡
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
It's so lovely to hear that you watch my videos with your mom! 💖Unfortunately, I'm not sure what this style would be called. I'm very inspired by John Singer Sargent and Zorn though, I love the way they used minimal brushstrokes to capture features. I also took a class by Greg Manchess, and I learned a lot from him about how to be more intentional with my brushstrokes. My goal is always to be loose and painterly, but intentional and structural at the same time. I have a gouache portrait painting class coming out with Etchr Studio on April 30th if you're interested!
These are excellent. I’ve recently started painting portraits with gouache too. How do you get the sketchbook to hold the paint? Do the pages not get warpy?
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I don't prep my sketchbook pages at all. This is a Moleskine art sketchbook and I find the paper handles gouache really well with minimal warping. I think if you wanted to use more watery techniques, priming the pages would be the way to go though!

Awesome paintings. Also you don't use round brushes for gouache? I guess they are used more for watercolor
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
I use the 6, 4, and 2 round brushes, but I do prefer using flat brushes to block in larger shapes in gouache 😄
Can you teach me how to mix your colors palette ?
What type of gouache paint do you use?
@emhuesart
Ай бұрын
I use Winsor & Newton, Holbien, and Turner Designer gouache! Holbien is my favorite gouache brand, but can be pretty pricey. Turner is very affordable where I am, but their color selection isn't very large. There are also certain colors that only Winsor & Newton carries, like Linden green. 😊
Wonderful art pieces, please do a video of to do draw faces, im good with florals and landscape but people, definitely translate how I'm with them.....iffy 😂 The brushes worked very well, one question though, because they work for you, are they beginner friendly also
@emhuesart

That is a video I've been really wanting to make for a while now! 🫣 I promise it will happen! To answer your question about the brushes, I think they would be a great set to learn how to paint with. I know I'm biased, but out of all of the brushes I have tried with gouache, they are my favourite! I'd say they're perfect for beginners to advanced 💖
