I'm 61 and just starting out, I want to be able to paint portraits of my family. You make this appear so simple and straightforward; are there any tips you can give an absolute novice? My main problem with faces is proportion and angle to the light. Don't seem able to get both correct, one of them maybe. but not both.

The easiesg way to start portraits is to drop an image into an online image editor and use colorize mode to reduce the image to color shapes. I purchased an opaque projector to put images on canvas

Kirb .o Colors that are complimentary should create the color brown. Yellow and purple, blue and orange, and green and red. You want to use richer colors like blue since it’s a cooler color, you can use it to make the color brown look darker. But make sure it’s the desired color you want.

You just described exactly-what took me 20 years to learn.. your paintings are bright and fresh. I love that about them!
Love how you simplify the theories, makes me feel much less overwhelmed starting new pieces ♡
whenever you roll the background it gives me huge anxiety but I love it
Best advice ever, especially the last one. I never feel that I’m done. There’s always ONE more thing to do. Your suggestion that if “another brush stroke doesn’t enhance, but just makes a change, then it’s probably time to stop” (paraphrased) will be my new mantra.

BRILLIANT!!! Thank you for this video! I’ve recently started painting again (I tattoo for a living) and this is probably the most informative video I’ve seen to get me back into my flow.
Painting complex areas first makes perfect sense seeing as you're energy and focus are sharp in the beginning and can take a small break being loose while filling out bigger areas
Thanks so much for articulating the process extremely well!
Brilliant content once again Alpay, I appreciate all this free content its amazing. While it’s still coming can you maybe do a video of your palette? how you mix your colours and keep them so clean and mudless.
Love the eyes, specifically the white of the eye. Looks like glossy effect. Really cool
I enjoyed this tutorial a lot. Thank you! I struggle with knowing when to blend and when not to, and listening to you say "loose but convincing" gave me direction!
subtle but varied palette..i love your portrait painting! thank you. blessings
This was great. I've been struggling with black and white underpaintings (portraiture is not my comfort zone) but this feels much more intuitive. Also I love what you do with deconstruction!
All the videos i have watched have all diff techniques but they all make sense. I love how this is broken down into steps. The technique used is what works best for the artist. ❤️❤️
You were spot on. Your tip made a huge difference. Until I tried your method I was saving eyes, nose and mouth till the end which caused me to paint them in a very loose impressionistic manner. This lead to I could only paint males up until I tried your idea. I drew a quick sketch of a gal on a small canvas pad and within one hour I completed a wonderfully done female image that had all the soft features I had not been able to pull off prior to the change. Thanks a ton.... Mike
I agree with each step! Very well said! 👌👌👌
It's refreshing to watch you painting oh my this so beautiful .. thanks for sharing your art and knowledge with us
Thank you so much. When I paint a portrait in graphite, I like to do the eyes, nose and mouth first so I can see the likeness in those areas in great detail and the person in the portrait begins to pop out in 3-D. Now that I want to paint portraits in oils, I see that most tutorials don't do that, and the chaos in the early stages makes me uncomfortable. Sooooo a thousand thank you's for showing me I can paint an area and almost finish it as I go along, to tweak it later. What a relief!
Wow...You made it look so simple and your commentary was specific, short and to the point even with adding in the personal discretions you use to bring everything full circle, Bravo good job
Watching you paint all the skin tones was soooo satisfying. I’m trying to figure out how to do that myself. You made it look so easy. Unfortunately the medium I work with doesn’t blend well. If you blend it too much with too many colors it will look muddy, I have to find a way to see where my painting is going in layers instead of being able to blend everything at once. I work in nails with gel polish that needs to be cured. I’ve painted faces but I want to learn how to paint more realistically.
Yea I’m going to experiment with oil paint soon. I love how smooth the application is, unlike acrylic paint

The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... eyes often times say more then words can...
