50 BMG necked-down to shoot a stay pin. You load the powder through the flash hole as the neck is too narrow. It's an old gag article from the Handloader magazine about 30 years ago.

You're brave using a suppressor. The US army concluded in .50bmg necked down to .22 tests that the M193 projectile comes apart shreading it's jacket at roughly 6000 FPS due to the rotational force.

It's only that fast near the muzzel, the low BC of the small bullet causes it to decelerate rapidly. A little .223 from this isnt even supersonic at 400 yards. Whereas a 200g high BC (above .7) bullet going about 3000 fps is supersonic out to 2300 yards more or less. In reality this Sabot round wont even make it to a mile.

@@philippefrater2000 Rifling compresses the bullet/sabot combo. The moment it leaves the barrel it begins to expand against the air pressure that's inside of the silencer. Not only that, baffle apertures are marginally bigger than the bore of the rifle in which they are made. I'd be willing to bet that with the first shot, that sabot began to open and he had baffle contact. Not only that, his spread was way, way too far apart. Could be to round not being stable, but could also very well be due to baffle contact.

The .30-378 Weatherby Magnum was able to attain over 5,000 ft/s (1,500 m/s). Chad Klaren You have a source for this 9000FPS claim? I haven’t actually found a source. I wonder if you could “lace” gunpowder with a bit of explosive material. Not a lot-like 1% starting point and maybe a bit above-to boost the burn rate and thus muzzle velocity. It’d probably be the best way to try and boost muzzle velocity, if it actually worked (some explosives are more insensitive than others). You’d need tougher barrels and chambers, but it could work...maybe.

@@bigbluebuttonman1137 I personally had record velocity with a very light 1.07 gram ball bearing fired as a sabot from a Mosin rifle-with the regular load I had 7100 fps and with the load laced with PETN I got a whopping 8200 fps!So here you go! By the way using an HE as propellant can increase the velocity so much that you will get around 1st and 2nd cosmic speeds but you will have to significantly alter your gun so that it will be able to fire this!I used to experiment with just a barrel, bullet and explosion chamber filled with about a milliliter of Astrolite-D and the 0.8 gram 3.2mm bullet was getting 10800 meters per second which is just nuts!Interesting concept though:just imagine how cool it will be if the gun will be made around this concept:the propellant will be loaded from a tank in the buttstock because it is a liquid, the tiny bullets will be loaded from the magazine which will contain hundreds of them while being half the size of an AR-15 mags and the electric current will set off the charge in any rate you want..Meanwhile the huge velocity will result in Herlich effect that will enable it to pierce a very thick armour perhaps even a tank and also the other effect such as ablative hydroshock will result in unbelievable lethality because when it will hit the living target it will really result in a serious explosion that will obviously be enough to permanently disable an insurgent if hitting limbs by tearing those off and will likely wound or kill by the fragments of the said body part..Must be a really scary one!

Scaling up what it takes to even feel warmth very little is gonna be happening at 3500kmh , maybe 100°c tops . wouldn't even bother alloy , 100°c is lower then the working temperature of a hdpe plastic kettle. I did this 30 years ago with 300 Weatherby. It was fun. Terrible accuracy(4"). Not much for terminal ballistics either. I found that 30 cal 110g HP at 4000 was very accurate (.5) and explosive on varmints. Good video.

My Dad loaded some .30 Carbine FMJs in his Weatherby years ago. 4200fps is the highest I recall. Some were coming apart right out of the muzzle though, peppering the chronograph. OK, it actually blasted the Chrony pretty good. That thing is still ticking though. I may have to experiment with some better bullets. Copper solids should be awesome.

when massively changing projectile weight you need to change powder burn rates as well. "rumor" has it, a 50ish grain projectile out of a bull barrel(safety)50. cal running upwards of 72-78kpsi got real close to 7000ft/sec.the sabot was 3d printed 30%glass fiber mix. and ya this guy needs to eat some soap Big time.

No doubt, I honestly thought it was a typo when i read the title so I can only imagine being behind the rifle the first time you broke a shot was tense to say the least. As long as you are not getting any pressure spike indications on your brass though I hope you get a great load developed and keep making videos with it.

Good science. Can is not safe. Older folks have tried this before. Can and muzzle breaks get damaged. And you will notice a change in the pattern at the target. And you need to watch for pressure problems. Case deform. Bolt having a hard time unlocking. Bolt face damage. Some advice. Check and clean your bolt face after every shot. Pieces of powered and brass can cause real problems and dangers at such high pressures. Luck to you.

Glen Butler Thats true. But id bet that a 1in 10" twist will make a 69 grain hpbt flay straight. I think my 308 is 1 in 12" the 69's didn't keyhole but 75's did when they even hit the paper. They were bad. Id like to try some seirra 60grain hp's. They shot excellent out of a 22-250 i had. With a 1in14" twist. That would be a great bullet to try in the win mag case.

Plastics of the sabo probably weren’t surviving the pressure. So with that in mind the bullet was just bouncing around. The pressure provided by the bullet was not enough which probably left some un burnt powder. You may get high speed but unless it’s with a proper shouldered and crimped case with the right amount of powder you’ll never get the the round to function properly. Sabots are for shotguns only for a reason

I had some in .30-06 in Africa, I did some rotten shots on baboons with them, either I’m a rubbish shot but the shots were all over the place where I thought I aimed carefully, nonetheless I bagged 4 and must have wounded half a dozen or so, did the whole box in less than a minute, load one shoot one, I was like a robot on speed. Looking at this vid and your shooting, it confirms that my rounds were definitely off or I am a shite shot.

Sabots DO NOT peel away from the projectile at the muzzle because the air in front of the bullet is being forced to travel at the same speed. A short distance from the muzzle, that changes and resistance from non moving air peels off the sabot. I know I didn’t use the correct scientific words but.....you get my drift...right ? Super high speed film confirms it.

I wish someone would neck a 50 g down to .22” or .172”. If he can get 5,000 FPS I bet with the right powder (and only solid brass bullets) they could achieve Mach 5. Maybe even start hitting the 6,000 FPS. I do wish he could test these loads with a lab radar or something anything a bit more reliable than a chronograph. There’s too many wired ways that could be off. Jacketed billets can’t really survive past 4200 FPS from what I’ve heard. I bet those bullet weren’t in good shape. I wish he had captured one in some sort of soft medium!!!

This makes a 5.56 round comparable to 308 at the muzzle with energy another way to see the increase is it's more then doubles ( over 2.5 times) the energy compared to the normal 55 grain 5.56mm......yikes I've always wondered why this hasn't been done more with the bigger rifle cartridges, now imagine a 50BMG round necked down to 30 caliber.......that cartridges pushes a 700+ grain pill to 2600-2800 fps now cut that weight down below 250gr. aka less then half it's original payload it would be a laser I would guesstimate somewhere around 4500+ which would be ridiculous

Most of the issues with hyper velocity sabot rounds come from inadequate rifling as .22 rounds are not meant to be fired out of a barrel optimized for longer .30 caliber projectiles as many 30 cal rifles are offered in a 1 to 12 twist rate. HOWEVER: Most 30 caliber rifles such those in the 30-06 are now also offered in 1 in 10 twist rate nowadays which is closer to the optimal 1 in 9 twist rate for 62 grain rounds like MK-318 and M855A1. While Accuracy is not guaranteed to be as good as a normal longer 30 caliber bullet (Around 2.8-3.5 MOA depending on how the round was loaded which frankly is more than good enough for most varmints save for the smallest ones) it is acceptable for the velocity the bullets are going, as the faster bullets travel the less effective spin becomes at stabilizing the round without a corresponding increase in Length to diameter ratio. However, I do have an interesting proposition. Instead of .223 rounds why not load 5.45 russian rounds (Actual diameter 5.6mm)? An 80 grain round for the caliber exists and it is a longer bullet, and the optimal twist rate is also 1 in 10. This gives it the perfect combination theoretically for: -A high muzzle velocity in excess of 4800 feet/sec and likely in the ballpark of 5000+ with 300WM cases -A stable projectile with the optimal length to diameter ratio that has a twist rate that matches those of most 30 caliber bullets -Good energy retention as that 80 grain round is rather heavy for its caliber. -Accuracy as a fast and stable round = less drift and drop. To give you an idea of how accurate the 80 grain 5.45 7U1 projectiles were, they achieved a 1.04 inch R50 group at 100 meters, or roughly a 2 inch group in American standards. This gives it a mechanical accuracy of 2 MOA.

It's not the bullet velocity that burns out the barrel, but extreme pressure needed to get the standard weight bullet up to Extreme Velocity and that causes extreme heat. There's a reason why they call it "burning out" a barrel. Too much heat at the throat acts like a blowtorch. With so light a load he doesn't need high pressure to go fast so there's no extreme heat to burn out the barrel. Ever see a 22 caliber pellet fired out of a 22 long rifle with a blank cartridge? Not a lot of pressure and not a lot of powder but those light little pellets come out screaming fast, and the barrel does not get burned out. Also the barrel doesn't get burnt out it's the throat that gets burnt out, you know that part right in front of the chamber where maximum pressure and maximum heat are generated before the bullet goes out the barrel.
