The powder is way to slow for light projectiles. Needs to be loaded up with something around Varget burn rate.

+1 to James_wingthwong_Banks, it would be very interesting to look at the projectile in flight with a high speed camera, this would answer the question about what the sabot and projectile is actually doing, with the 300WM and a projectile of the weight being used the velocity should be much higher, some time ago I experimented with some loads in my 300WSM and had a 130gn .308 projectile running at 3750 fps, so you should be able to get a 55 or 62 gn projectile going well over 4000 fps, as long as the sabot can hold the gas.

Bruce Coleman the factory 30-06 accelerator list a muzzle velocity of 4080fps. The most likely cause is using powder with the wrong burn rate. There is simply not enough back pressure for slow burning powders.

@joan fortier I actually am doing this too but my results are far higher than anything seen in conventional firearms! The maximum achieved velocity I got was with such an infamous high ex as Astrolite-D!Believe it or not but the 0.8 gram 3.2mm caliber projectile made of fused magnesium oxide approached the earth's escape speed:10.8 kilometers per second!Very interesting thing to consider is that it made it through over 6 inch of AR-680 mil spec steel,a wall made of concrete and bricks behind it and the 2 meters ground row behind all that!

@joan fortier I made quite a bit of this stuff and I believe I will certainly make more at some point! So many ideas about how to use such an insane force!Just imagine an assault rifle that is separately loaded from a tank with astrolite-D and a magazine with 3.2mm bullets-capacity will be several hundred rounds anyway-and such a futuristic weapon firing loads of such tiny bullets and despite the incredible speed and energy the recoil will be about the same as in conventional weapons! And being so fast-these bullets will really just obliterate everything:I suppose that even a modern tank might be vulnerable for these swarms and definitely any armoured vehicle will be nothing but a tin can for it!While I didn't test it on any meat-like objects(there might be quite a serious difference between the results on a piece of meat and ballistic gel due to presence of water in meat and not in gel)but I am sure that the effect will be total devastation of the target due to hydroschock that in this case will not only be from pushing the water out of the bullet's way but it will be vastly improved due to abblation of the water from the wound channel! No,from mass effect!

i would bet money this has to do with load density. .300 WM can shoot some long and heavy projectiles, and has case capacity aplenty. These .22 caliber bullets aren't going to come close to pushing the max OAL, and its safe to assume these were loaded from published data, meaning reasonable charge weights. The real tip off was when the lighter bullets came in at a lower velocity. Assuming they were loaded to the same OAL, the cartridge with the lighter bullet would have a lower load density (takes up less space in the case) and therefore a lower pMax. Id bet switching to a fluffier powder or seating the bullets deeper, if possible, would give you much better velocities

there could be a couple reasons why you're not getting optimal velocities 1) this is the most likely, the sabot shell is letting more gas than normal to go past the bullet 2) because the bullets are so light they accelerating fast enough that you're not getting max pressure by the time it leaves the barrel, a longer barrel would remedy that. 3) the sabot shell has enough friction reduction compared to copper that you're getting essential the same issue as #2. the last option is a combination of all 3.

I read somewhere that, copper fouling causes issues with sabots along with a bad crown. I'd scrub the bore with copper solvent before you fire sabots. Do a break in procedure scrubbing the bore with copper solvent in between shots. Then do a final scrub after you do your cleaning and break in regiment. I'd also have a gunsmith inspect the crown. The sabots probably are not sealing properly to the bore. It is possible that the sabots are melting to the bullet. To varify that I'd shoot them at a paper target. If you have .308 holes as opposed to .224 holes the sabot jacket has melted to the projectile.

I'd like to see one of those sabot out of the case. I'm wondering if the splits in the sabot go so far down the bullet that the gas pressure is blowing them out as they travel down the barrel. Maybe the sabot is too thin where it contacts the base of the bullet, resulting in the sabot being burned through. I'd even go so far as to wonder that the material the sabot is made from is too soft and shreds when it hits the rifling. A lot of variables.... High speed camera would let you see what's going on. These should be haulin' butt.....not down at 3400 fps.

@@WHOTEEWHO I think a faster powder is in order. Also, if you are getting 5000 fps muzzle velocity, out of a gun that is meant for 2500 or so, your twist rate will make the bullet go all squirly, and a tumbling bullet will slow down a lot faster. TAOFLEDERMAUS should do some testing of this with his super-slow-mo cams. ;)

Highly intriguing. High velocity without the associated extreme barrel wear... first question is- Are the sabots holding up to the torque of being twisted through the rifling and are the bullets still accurate at range. Color me interested. Hypervelocity rounds are neat.

@@agator2660 Maybe I don't understand the question. "What's safer about this speed"? Nothing. I was referring to the plastic sabot protecting the barrel. In theory anyway. (I suspected that the plastic boot might just deform under such extreme stress and leave the bullet sans spin, which is why I was hoping for a long range test) Now I'm going to go back and see if this guy did it. Thanks for reminding me.

My bad, forgot to clarify that I didn't mean the sabot but regular bullets. Also maybe I should ask a novice question but I thought most of the motivation of a sabot was to give the mechanical work of a large bore to a small-bore round but maybe that's not the real reason why tanks use sabots but that Mach 6 would destroy the barrel if metal-on-metal?

Got some of these for my 30-30. I wonder what kind of plastic the sabot is made of? Sabots are not legal ammunition where I live, so I have no clue wherever they are injection molded or 3D printed. If printed, my guess is that the plastic is powderized in the barrel due to the pressure.

I have a bag of about 500 of these "remington accelerator" sabot's that I have reloaded in a lot of different .30 cal rifles but not the .300 wm as of yet.. My experience have been that they like to key hole at ranges over 50 yards unless you're using a rifle with 1:10 or tighter rate of twist... You really have to put a fast spin on them so they stabilize properly.. Try them on an organic target like a watermelon.. Its pretty impressive.. 😀👍

Usually at this caliber a round already necked down to burn more powder from the get go was proven way faster than a sabot mod. Easier to get the bullet to accelerate on its own through rifling with a better gas seal against the barrel. A tank Cannon is different since that high speed fin stabilized sabot is gas sealed against a smooth bore or some specialty rifling. The only good use for a sabot is for a rifled shotgun when hunting big game beyond shotgun slug distance.

Interesting guys I was not aware the components were available to load Sabots thats cool. My Dad was a big fan of the 3006 Accelerators when they came out they were like your loading a .30 cal with a .22 in a sabot those were clocked 4020 fps and you guys have a lot more case capacity than an 06, I think you need to look hard at some burn rates of different powders along with some barrel length changes? If you use the 3006 Accelerator as you baseline with what your using as components I would think you should be in the mid to high 4000 FPS range. I think your going to find the biggest variable is going to burn rates of the powders your using, with the case capacity you have the slower the powder burn rate will keep your pressures in check but then your barrel length is going to play a big part in this also. At 4020 fps the bullet was spinning over 100,000 RPM when it left the barrel and Remington said the sabot was shed from the bullet within 12 ft from the muzzle. I could see this being pretty cool experiment but its going to take a whole lot of time to get the optimum loading to make this work effectively enough to make it worth it guys?

What if the bullet is tumbling because it's going down the barrel too fast for the sabot to engage the rifling in any meaningful way? Also likely the reduced bullet mass is reducing bullet's time in the barrel below the threshold needed to burn the powder, creating a "terminal muzzle velocity" for the given barrel length.

Couple issues, the fireball tells me the powder is burning to slow. Could be the sabot leaking but try a faster burn rate powder. Most likely the sabot disintegrate from heat and pressure though. Make a sabot from copper or brass and bet it gets close to the "eargasplitten loudenboomer" look that up, it's a real thing!

Seeing some mistakes here. Years ago I bought a bag of empty accelerator sabots from the Shotgun News. Tried to find loading data for a .308 Win for 55 grainers and for some tungsten that I had turned to .224, with mixed results and success. A co-worker had a friend that worked at Blount, which at the time was the parent company for CCI/Speer/IMR. He worked on loading data. His recommendations to me- you MUST use heavy crimp, otherwise the sabot displaces before you get a burn established. Then the best part was this "fill a case to the neck/shoulder line with IMR-4198, seat, crimp hard, and let her rip"..... he claimed that the burn rate in that size tube, with a sabot and not a bullet could NOT overpressure the gun. I AM NOT saying to try that here, BUT it at least gives you an idea that burn rate matters with a sabot. For the .300 look at IMR 3031 or WW 748.

Slow motion footage at the end of the muzzle. I bet the sabot is exiting the barrel before the bullet from getting pushed past it inside the barrel. If a stronger sabot material was used the speeds would probably be even faster if that is what is happening and I believe that to be the case if the reading seriously dropped by 500 feet per second from the muzzle to 100 yards. Either way it would be interesting to see.
