Outcast - A New Beginning | Adelpha Homesick Blues

What chicanery is this!? The retro games guy is covering a (somewhat) new release...AGAIN!? I swear, Mike better have something worthwhile to say about Cutter Slade's big return or I'm unsubscribing...

As someone who went through grieving over my late stepdad by discovering your channel and watching all your hilarious but still insightful reviews/retrospectives, I'm glad you made me discover the Outcast series, especially the original game's moody symphonic soundtrack. Plus, you're the only reviewer on KZread I know who references Dave the Barbarian (a show I'm STILL baffled hasn't been re-released on DVD/Blu-Ray or gotten on Disney Plus by now), so that alone is a plus too. Keep up the fantastic work, Swanny.

I'm happy that my videos could help you through such a tough time. I'm sorry for your loss. And at this point, referencing Dave the Barbarian is as much an editing challenge for me as it is just expressing my love for the show. I want to see how long it takes until I can't find a way to fit a single clip or soundbite into a video.

Thank you for a review. I was worried about the game from trailers since it looked TOO much like Just Cause. But I'm glad to hear that it's a worthy successor to the original Outcast. Now I will have to keep an eye on the discounts to get it.

Yeah, the trailers really make the game look like it's nothing but combat, combat, combat. And, I mean, it DOES have a lot of combat, but I feel that the marketing team missed how much of Outcast's appeal is in the setting and exploration. Thankfully, the devs themselves didn't make the same mistake. I hope you enjoy A New Beginning whenever you give it a shot! And thanks for watching!

A good Review (and I was glad to see you mentioned the Bit of Elex-Trivia). I can definitely agree with all of what you said in the Video, but I personally could have lived with 10% less Humor (the original had quirky Moments, but not quite as constant, I think). And sometimes the Quest-Design felt oddly disjointed to me. I think I would have wished for a few more wholly original Music-Tracks in the original Style, but then again I appreciated how the Score often Times picks up the original Themes and recontextualizes them in a new and different Way. Funny that you mention Avatar The Last Airbender (I mean, at Least the Game has Four-Elements-Stuff, albeit just Coincidence^^), because those round Bison-Sheep kept reminding me of Appa. :)

It's weird, I really thought I was going to get tired of the added humor by the end. Instead it reminded me of that style of humor we got all the time on the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/Dreamcast. I wasn't exactly laughing my ass off all the time, but it got a chuckle out of me more than once. I've been known to have shit taste in comedy though lol. And NGL, I would be all for an Outcast 3 that's all about elemental powers like in Avatar.

It may be a new release, but the gameplay definitely looks retro. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm extremely tired of most modern game design, so it's refreshing to see a game like Outcast come out. Bit much to charge $70 for It. Heck, I saw the 1st being sold digitally for like $2 on PSN recently. $40-$50 would've been better. But hey, no rip off microtransactions like Capcom pulled with Dragon's Dogma 2. So, yay.

I couldn't find the right way to phrase it in the script that didn't sound like I was being condescending to A New Beginning, but it feels a lot like a 360/PS3 game with better graphics. Not exactly retro yet (though its getting closer and closer to twenty years since the 360 launched, fuck the linear march of time) but definitely working off of older design philosophies. And man, I hate how Capcom just had to tank all the goodwill Dragon's Dogma 2 had up to release. The first Dragon's Dogma is one of my favorite games of that whole generation. In fact, I almost covered DD2 instead of A New Beginning, but changed my mind at the last minute since I'd already done the first Outcast. I'm sure once Capcom bleeds the stone dry, 2 will get most of the MTX scrubbed from it, yet it shouldn't have come to that in the first place. Too many businessmen with zero understanding of video games are running video game companies.

I've found that it's fun to keep a balance of old and new. Plus, the old games help with waiting for newer games to get discounted lol
