Grandia | A Charming Grind

Ойындар

It's back to the classic RPG well for Mike with the adorably charming Grandia! Now if only he hadn't gone with the HD "remaster"...

I just realized that I forgot to credit the song I use at the end this time! It's Industrial by Lee Groves from the Carmageddon soundtrack.

That farewell scene with Sue might be the most emotional farewell scene in JRPGs. At least it was for me...

Grandia is such a masterpiece! And Grandia 2 improved on everything making it even more perfect.

Grandia 2 onwards it no longer took FORVER to lv up the party members exp lvs weapon lv grinding is just as fast from the 2nd onwards games.

If you’re interested in similar “slow start” JRPGs and even similar graphical vibe, Trails in the Sky is an incredible pick. Kind of shows just how wildly ahead of its time Grandia was, considering the amount of vibe-based similarities.

Back in my days of owning a Saturn and doing imports I always had missed this game though I had heard so much about it. Thanks for this vid. I agree this is a glorified emulator, but the game sure is solid. The mid 90s polygon environments look spectacular compared to my memories of, say, SF3. Now there is a game(s) which could use a nice looking upscale such as this. Sadly, my backlog + aversion to grinding games means I'll probably skip over this one. Having never finished SF3 from the Saturn days, the idea that a SRPG has limited, calculated fights makes me more likely to play it. Excellent vid! I hope the best for the channel!

The game itself is gorgeous. Just from the bit I played for the footage, the Saturn version amazed me with how well it handled polygon environments. I love the Saturn, but the old girl doesn't always handle 3D too well. Also, I can totally understand the aversion to grinding. There's only so much of it that I can tolerate myself.

Totally agree on the dub, i prefer the goofy wonky dubs for stuff like this. It just reminds me of watching fandubbed anime when i was a kid. Its case by case tho, im glad panzer dragoon saga didnt have a dub because such melancholic and subtle story would be ruined by cheap english VAs who saw the script for the first time in a recording booth But speaking of grandia, i played grandia 2 first and to be perfectly honest i thought it was aggressively mid (it gains point for pretty funny lines MC says and MGS voice actors that made me feel like Liquid Snake and Colonel are reading me a bed time story) and i hated the gameplay. I havent tried grandia 1 yet but you saying it has grind makes my hair stand on ends...

Oh God, a 90s English dub of Panzer Dragoon Saga would have been awful! That's one of the absolute best RPGs on the Saturn, hell, that whole console generation! Funny enough, you're not the first person to tell me that Grandia II isn't all that, but because I'm a weirdo contrarian, that makes me want to play it more. lol

While I prefer Grandia 2's story and characters over 1 for story to not stretch itself to unfathomable size, I would still call that in my opinion first game has way better world-building and character dynamics than 2. While I like development between Ryudo and Elena, Justin/Feena relationship feels way more developed. Also Ryudo's character arc feels as standard reluctant anime hero, Justin's growth from a little kid to a full-fledged hero feels way more developed. And then there's Grandia 3 that lacks charm of 1 and briefness or characters of 2 and just falls into infinite grind at disc 2... But now on PS2...

The more comments have talked about it, the more curious I am about Grandia II. I played a little bit of it when I first bought it on PC, but got distracted by other games (IIRC it was Trails in the Sky). Now I definitely want to play it to compare and contrast with the first game myself! And because I can't help my own curiosity, I'll probably subject myself to Xtreme and III someday lol.

It is playable at least, I'll give them that. Plus the problems I had with the filter over the sprites might not be as noticeable on the Switch itself, at least in handheld mode.

There are some glitches but I had a big update when I picked that game up and it looks like it fixed some stuff I'm sort of dreading playing the 2 game but I have so many other games to play right now including persona 5 ogre battle N64 the game Boy advance Dragon quest game and hybrid heaven so and I'm working on a Lewis and Clark Superman season 2 review

grinding in this one takes forever sure theirs like LV 40+ enemies in the FINAL DUNGEON but at that point while I had Heaven and Earth cut for Justine usable I didn't even have LV 25 party members since exp lvs take longer to get then weapon/spell lvs do despite that DISC 1 ALONE took me well over 60+ hours before ending doing the disc 1 to disc 2 change.

  • @SwannyTheMike

Yep. Once you get Justin's weapon and spell levels up high enough, XP levels kind of stop mattering with the crazy amount of damage he can do.

  • @veghesther3204

    @veghesther3204

But at at the same time if you have Heaven and Earth cut and are ONLY like at lv 25 against the lv 40+ final dungeon enemies then Justin himself is only going to get 1 use of of Heaven and Earth cut before he has no move SP (MP to spend) on that weapon skill so he kind of needs to be lv 40+ to get like 4 to 5 uses of of it since the final dungeon bosses may actually need that many to kill each one with it.

@@veghesther3204 If you manage to make it through the Soldier's Graveyard, you get a ring that halves SP usage. Give that to Justin and you get closer to 2 or 3 uses of Heaven and Earth before you have to start using the other skills.

About that lv 25 is way too weak to go through that Graveyard dungeon by the time I actually could learn Heaven and Earth cut IN the final dungeon itself you can no longer go to that Graveyard dungeon for the rest of the game.

Well, I'll find out whenever I get around to Grandia II. It might be a bit though. I need a break from the series after I wore myself out on editing this one. No idea how a shorter video was more exhausting than the ginormous Star Trek FPS video, but it was.

Actually the go-to term for "Beastmen" in anime is 獣人, what means... "Beastmen". Demi-human is 亜人, and it mostly refers to goblins, orcs, etc.

Oh, really? Well that's what I get for assuming that I'd picked up any Japanese from games, anime, or Midnight Diner. EDIT: Got to thinking about how that might have sounded like I was implying that I thought I genuinely knew Japanese thanks to such shallow sources. I meant it as a joke about my own ignorance.
