Suikoden I & II | SD Re(view)master

Ойындар

Let's take a look back at the first two games in a series that seriously needs more love!
An Excerpt from the Diary of 'The Editor':
As I approach the eighth day of editing this accursed video, my mind begins to waver. What will become of me once I am done? Should I succeed in editing That Which Refuses To Be Edited, will I become myself again? No longer trapped at my desk, struggling to decide if I should use a clip from earlier or later in the game? What if I encounter another flashing effect that I must edit frame by frame in the hopes of reducing the problem for those affected who chose to soldier on, despite the warning I placed at the beginning?
Questions, questions, and yet more questions! My mind assails me with questions as the video continues to fail to take shape. What appeared right now seems wrong, lines I spoke with confidence now sound limp and flaccid upon hearing them for the umpteenth time today alone. Sometimes I wonder how much longer it will be until the madness sets in. Then I gaze at the screen and contemplate my decision to combine what should have been two videos into one. In that moment of clarity, I realized the truth of it all: the madness was always with me! Walking beside me, just out of view, the entire journey. I may never sleep soundly again...
On the plus side, I finally figured out which Dave the Barbarian clip to use, so that streak is still alive. Yay me!

    Thanks so much for covering this series. It's an old favorite duology of mine. I loved the cooking game in Suikoden 2 and the sheer collection of characters compared to 1. I'm hoping the remasters will still come out and I'm glad you are a fellow Valeria fan!

    The cooking minigame was one of my favorites too! I heard that spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has its own cooking minigame, so I'm hoping that turns out well (I hope the rest of the game is good too). Especially with Konami being radio silent on the HD remasters lately. I swear, if Konami had anyone in charge who knew what they were doing, they'd be dominating the industry with the library they have.

    Regarding the small rant about the “chose to be a woman” line, I have a theory for it that I’ll admit is baseless since I know nothing of Japanese grammar and how it translates to English. Still, my theory is that the line may have more accurately been “I’ve chosen to be a person, rather than a commander”, meaning that Odessa made the strategically wrong decision of sacrificing herself, the leader of the rebel army, for one unimportant child. By saying that she chose to be a person rather than a commander, it could be her basically saying that she was fallible in that moment and prioritized her own moral compass over what was good for her forces. It would be pretty easy to mistranslate person to woman considering it was spoken from her point of view, especially if Japanese grammar has conjugation which would mean it was conjugated for female pronouns. Anyway, that’s my theory, it could be completely off basis but it at least makes sense in my head. Thanks for making the video, it’s great.

    Or woman = maternal instinct As the leader, she treats her followers like her own children, especially the young ones. In this context, she acted more like a mother would than a leader. Losing a leader can demoralize your army and she was aware of that.

    @@SwannyTheMikeI don't think it needs to be adjusted. I could be wrong but if feels to me like your taking it as women can't be a leader or women is less then a leader but that is not the game. The game is full of female leaders so like what was mentioned above; she chose to act like a woman and put her instincts to protect a child above her cause as a leader. By doing so she knew she was dooming the rebellion but still chose that one life over hundreds.

  • @SwannyTheMike

    @SwannyTheMike

    @@DracoOoOoOo My problem with the line is that it's phrased in a way to sound like it's saying that you can either be a woman or a leader, not both. Which also winds up weirdly implying that no man would ever have similar protective instincts towards a child. (Incredibly ironic when you consider Jowy and Pilika in 2) And I did point out in the video how much this contrasts with the rest of the female cast who have no such issue. It's why I assume that it's a localization mistake rather than a genuine statement on the game's part.

    I don't think any deliberate malice was intended. It's just one of those translated lines that needed a couple people to say it out loud and realize "Oh, that's not what we're going for here!" Considering it's Konami though, I wouldn't be shocked if there was literally no time to do so and the translation team was being made to crunch the whole way.

    The way to keep Pahn alive; From the moment you get him back, do not take him out of your team until after the Teo Mcdohl duel. Ensure he has your best armour equipped, his weapon is fully upgraded with a rune fforged into his fists. And then use defend until Teo kills himself from wild attacking you too much.

    Think your misunderstood the "chose to be a woman" line. Think of it like this... If I am a salesman and you are my greasy boss. You know of a lady who has kids down the street that I could easily trick into buying our product, but its going to negatively affect many things in her kids lives that she would otherwise need the money for. But you dont care and send me and tell me to get the sale at ALL costs. But halfway through the sale, after she has agreed to buy. I realize that this sale is going to totally screw the household over- Its something she doesnt really need and shes giving up things her kids rrally DO need because we tricked her. So right as she is about to sign, I say "You know what? No, forget it" and rip the paper from her and tear it in half and tell her not to buy it. Later you say to me what the hell did I do and I say "I chose to be a man, not a salesman" or maybe replace "man" with "father". Its not me saying men or fathers cant be salespeople, its me saying, essentially, i got my priorities straight. I think this is how the line is meant, if that makes sense

  • @SwannyTheMike

    @SwannyTheMike

    9 ай бұрын

    A lot this comes down to the horrifying abomination of multiple language groups that is English. Saying "I chose to be a man" has multiple meanings because man can be either in reference to gender, or as shorthand for human. Whereas "I chose to be a woman" has a more specific meaning towards gender. I may not have articulated it like I meant to in the video, but I believe this to simply be poor phrasing on the localization's part. It happens. Especially when the team responsible were most likely being forced to crunch.
