    Apologies if my voice sounds off at any point in the video. The last couple weeks have been rough for me personally (nothing serious, just made it hard to get motivated) and it may have come through in my tone in a few spots.

    "Name any other game where you can suplex chickens" Final Fantasy 6 (technically 3 on the SNES in US). Sabin can Suplex some enemies (including a god damned TRAIN), and there are a few chicken styled enemies.

    This was on Sega Channel for a while, I loved it. Cant remember if it was a demo or never got very far since no saving on Sega Channel, but either way I just played the first bit over and over. Never found it to rent or buy either. Nice video.

    It's so wild to me that Sega essentially had their own form of Game Pass in the 90s. Shame that my hometown didn't get anything better than dial-up internet until about 2000. Thanks for watching!

    Sega Channel is one of those examples of Sega having a really forward-thinking concept that would have worked if the infrastructure had been there for it. Hell, in the Japan the Mega Drive had online multiplayer! The connection was atrocious from what I understand, but it was functional, damn it! It really makes me wonder how much of an industry leader Sega would be today if the execs at the top weren't colossal morons.

    Loved this game. Cool unique atmosphere and the spirits were kind of like pokemon to young me who didn't have a gameboy at the time when Pokemon was exploding in popularity. Funny thing I always remember about the Pal version is the manual specifically telling you not to use the 6 button controller and that it wouldn't work, which is completely wrong as the extra buttons and mode button act as hot keys for stuff you otherwise have to open up the menu for with a 3 button pad.

    I’m of the opinion that Centy is the more engaging ”Zelda-like” (as if Zelda wasn’t taking ideas from even older games like Hydlide and Dragon Slayer etc.). It has a nice combination of problem-solving and action in it, with an unconventional animal-assist system to spice things up long-term. It just has the better world, soundtrack and fun sense of child-like exploration, not to mention better platforming. Thor/Oasis strikes me as a tad bit vanilla for the genre.

  • @SwannyTheMike

    @SwannyTheMike

    I actually talked about the influence Hydlide and Dragon Slayer had in my Ys video (cheap plug!). I mainly call them Zeldalikes because I feel it gets the idea of what I'm talking about quickly, similar to Metroidvania. Metroid wasn't the first sidescrolling game to have exploration and gated progression (Brain Breaker on the X1 came out a year prior), but it is the most famous. There isn't really a genre that I feel these kinds of games fit neatly into so I call them Zeldalikes until someone comes up with a better term. Centy does certainly have a charming vibe from what I've played thus far and I can't disagree on the platforming. Though I don't think I would go so far as to call Beyond Oasis vanilla myself. If nothing else, the beat 'em up aspects and Arabian mythology angle helps it stand out from others at this time. I doubt I'd put it in my top 10 Zeldalikes, but I still enjoyed it and thing Oasis is a great game.

    Exile is even more overt in the original version as XZR II on Japanese PCs. There your character is outright a member of the Hashashin fighting against the Crusaders. Then somehow, it ends with your character time traveling to the 80s and fighting Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev. Oh, and all the healing and stat boosting items are hard drugs. Truly an insane game that I would love to talk about some day. And I've never actually played enough of either Sparkster or Rocket Knight to think to compare the soundtracks before. I'll have to check that out, thanks!
