Our Town is ON FIRE!

This week we focus on making a change to the original house design plans by adding a full loft to Ellie's bedroom. The floor joists that we temporarily installed with the intention of only being a platform to raise the ridge beam and rafters, will now need to be permanently installed. High wind gusts kick up as we lay the subfloor and little do we know, those high winds are causing downed trees in our little town resulting in sparks flying from powerlines and wildfires kicking up. Before long our county and others around us are ablaze with fire. Local volunteer fire departments are overwhelmed and call in the community to help.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and the buiness/work related side of our life can be found on our secondary channel "Josh and Erin- The After Show". Here you will see us renovating our Cafe, opening/operating the Cafe with goods from our farm, building/furnishing/running our short term rentals, finding/operating our other real estate investments and more. One thing volunteer departments across the country need is volunteers. I served as a volunteer firefighter for many years. The one thing we always need was and still is people. If you have the time and desire, please volunteer. Training is provided. It's a wonderful feeling to help your community.

While I agree, and am a volunteer myself, the problem, at least here, is that the volunteer departments are asking and expecting too much out of their members. They expect high availability and attendance, with seemingly little understanding for the fact that the members have families, jobs and lives outside of the hall. It's creating a culture where it's really hard to keep members

Ellie is such a natural with all of the animals she has come in contact with starting back when she was a toddler and you started recording your family's life and journey to create your homestead while building your forever home. All of the animals and especially the mommas and their new babies as well as each set of new chicks or ducklings. She is definitely an animal whisperer. She gets those gifts from both you and Josh because we have all seen your connection with all of your animals and babies both human and other species. We can't forget Josh's amazing connections with every type of animal you are raising to provide for your family. It is literally incredible to see how each type of animal goes to him seeking love and affection and how they return it to him. Watching how he can love on them and they feel so secure with him and will then fall asleep in his arms or cuddled up against him. Leon has always been such a giant puppy dog around Josh which has created endless content for your videos which is both endearing and hilarious at the same time especially when they insist on supervising whatever you are working on and they forget that they weigh over 300pounds. I still remember how that one bull you had that wanted nothing more than to follow Josh around demanding hugs, cuddles and would put it's head on Josh's shoulder and would fall asleep. Just like he could make the turkey fall asleep. I love how your community came together to help contain and put out the fire. Praying for all who were affected.

Josh, what I am about to say is not meant in any derogatory manner, but you have a pair of brass ones. LOL! You and Erin putting down the floor for Ellie's loft in that wind was scary but you held onto Erin when needed and lowered yourself to get the ladder that was blown down to get your precious wife down. When you turned the sound the howling wind was indeed scary for me. Additionally love the community spirit in helping out with all that you were able to fight the fire that helped greatly to help get it stopped. True spirit of early pioneers in the early days of our Republic. Also your parenting skills show in that your two young men found the little sheep abandoned by its mom and they did the correct to maintain it alive. Ellie is a wonderful care giver of animals and bottle feed the little sheep herself. Glad that all the prayers and thoughts and efforts were answered by the Good Lord and as a result the land is safe and you and your animals. BTW it seems like a Zoo on your property I vaguely remember that you only had chickens and lambs and now there are donkeys, bovines and what will be next? LOL! Until the next one be safe and prosper.

I have been in Hospital for six days, so wasn't able to watch your video. What was heartfelt watching you all get together to fight the forest fire. Looks like you will have another young lamb to look after, Ellie is going to enjoy that. - Good to see the build progressing a bit more, when you asked Josh are you going to help me down, if Josh didn't we all would. Keep well all of you love from Mike. ❤

I'm so glad that rain finally came. Four or five years ago our little town had a big scare with a forest fire out here in Oregon. So, I'm happy that the flames are out. God bless our fire departments.

Well done. Having lost our home to wildfire last month in Oklahoma, I can say we are truly in awe of the community around us. The help and support we received has helped us bounce back, beyond what I could have imagined. The folks around you... your community... these are the people that are and will be there for you in your time of need. Never take that for granted.

As a retired Firefighter/EMS Medical First Responder (volunteer and paid-on-call) with over 30yrs service in southern West Virginia, I've helped fight a lot of wild fire. The most fear I've ever faced was having a wildfire roaring up the hill in honeysuckle and being 50'-60' feet above our crew. As a lifelong Mountaineer (West Virginian), I'm used to seeing the outpouring of support from our small communities. Y'all were fantastic is helping out!! The equipment and people power definitely helps. As a Fire Service Instructor, I've helped teach classes in Hardy, Mineral and Pendleton counties back in the 90's.

I know that I'm just one of 1.08 million subscribers, but I want you to know that your vlog is a bright and heartwarming spot in my life. You're good people. You're doing good work. And you're doing it in a way that is accessible to anyone in America. If we could all remember that the values that bind us all are stronger than those that divide us ... what a lovely thing that would be. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for being a light in your (and our) community.

Like you, we jumped in to help with a wildfire in our area last year and, God forbid, will be ready and able if the need arises again. We helped rescue many farm animals and, in one case, saved a mans livelihood by doing so. The community support and outpouring of compassion from so many is why we love living in this rural community. We watch each other's backs. The fire is long since past, but, the recovery for loss will be years in future, if ever. God blessed you with the ability to help your community and neighbors. Thanks for stepping up!

It’s in their blood to provide help during extreme conditions, 24 hrs day or night. God bless them, and supper proud. So glade it turned out good. Love from Texas

This reminds me of what happened here in South Dakota 2 years ago when we had a terrible derecho storm that hit us. So many lost roofs, windows, homes, trees,, building, siding. Everyone came together weeks after to help each other cut trees & do clean up around each others homes. I had never seen anything like it let alone be the one blessed by others helping others in this way. My husband & I not only felt so blessed to help neighbors but have others help us!!
