Our Next BIG Adventure...PIGS!!! Building Our Pig Pen!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In less than 1 week we will be getting 3 Duroc/Hampshire cross piglets for our farm. We will be raising these for meat for our family and possibly to sell one of them. In this video Kevin is building the pig pen, shelter, waterers and feeders.

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

A little tip from a guy who ran pigs out on his property that works wonders with ours. Whenever we bring the pigs any kind of snack, food, whatever, we shake a little pint paint can with gravel in it. Makes a huge racket and the pigs will come running from down the mountain. It's very handy when one gets out or somewhere you don't want them. A soup can would work too. Best tip I ever learned. Even the cows come to it, lol.

That’s a good idea. Positive reinforcement.
I’m getting pigs 🐷! I’m doing research and I knew you guys would have a playlist 🙌🏻. Seriously you guys are such a blessing to new homesteaders! God bless 💕
good job on the pig pen. GOD BLESS.
This will be awesome for the pork......................great video..................it will be fun to watch them grow.............
Nice pen, Kevin. Our setup is very similiar. For my waterer, identical to yours, I built 3 risers constructed of 3 - 2"x12"x18" that I put between the pedistel and waterer to add height throughout their growth. I also ended up having to strap my waterer to the fence with a tiedown strap as the pigs would try to move it. We love what y'all are doing! It's a shame we don't live closer. Lastly, an addition that saved wear and tear on our fencing is a scratching post in the pen somewhat near their wallow. Just a 6" log 2' in the ground with about 6' above earth.

Trevor Levesque Good idea, scratching post.
Glad you saved the box turtle. I know you're nice to snakes, too. :-) That is one fine looking pig palace! Can't wait to watch them grow.
Raised some. Like the old sayin' goes..."If you have pigs you'll never be broke or hungry"!

Good job! Haha on shirt. Second time to day I've seen the words. Saw an older friend with a hat on with it I thought what?? Till I got close enough to read it!!!

I love spring and summer time. So much 'new' starts happening, especially on a homestead. It's always so exciting!
Yay. Next spring we do pigs here. One more step to self sufficiency

Vegetable Man We will too. What breed are you considering and why?
Piggies have a nice place to live. You did a wonderful job on fixing them their pen. Enjoy your piggies.
Nice job Kevin and now we have more pigs to watch on YT being raised.
You should get some Guinea hens they will take care of all those tics. I live in the country and my neighbor has a flock of about 50. They run loose and make there rounds and go back home at night. It really helped with the tics. And they don't mess with my gardens which is great.
Looks good, can't wait to see them!
Great job
Great job done! Beacon and chops are on the way. Tasty!
Can't wait to see those little piggies. Great job on the pig pen.
A very impressive looking pen especially when taking into account only 8 hours to get it ready. No duct tape, bailer twine, or bubble gum in the build and it shows.
Great Job Kevin , cant wait to see the pigs Im following living traditions homestead every day.
PSSSSST,,,(someone stole your PETA logo)....nice days work there, really enjoy the info you guys provide. thanks
Free range chickens take care of most insects. We live in east Tennessee and the ticks and mosquitoes are bad, our chickens make it possible to go outside in summer!!
Right on Kevin. Nice job!
Guineas are great for getting rid of ticks. Love your videos.
Fun to see them cooked
great going guys, preparing ahead of time is the best way to make sure your ready for the pigs to come !!
“ best way to learn about pigs is to get some “ lol I aim to do just that.
Appreciate the start up information, I’m watching the playlist to learn more! Thank u
Looks like you have it all ready! Great job. Chuck
Awesome video
Lol, I had to take a screen shot and zoom in on your T-Shirt. Then I had to restart the video after I stopped laugh'n...made my day, Kevin!! 😂
Nice job Kevin! can't wait to see y our little piglets
Love the t-shirt!!! I cannot wait to get pigs myself! Thanks for another amazing video!
Ticks and chiggers: An American Homestead swears by guinea hens!

very good job. can't wait to see the piggies
Exciting Pasture Raised Bacon, Ham and Pork Chops don't get better than that. A dozen Guanine Hens will help with the ticks, chiggers and snakes

Eagle Camp Homestead SWFL ...... sounds like 3 good names for the new piglets. “Bacon”, “Ham”, and “Pork Chops”. I always told my kids to never name the future food though. 😂
Thanks! We are working on our pig pen! Found a farmer that has piglets!
clicked "like" at the start of the vid based entirely upon your shirt. Nice hog pen! I like Duroc x hamp or york*shire crosses myself, too. Nice meaty pigs, plenty of bacon. The only change I'd see to make is I'd move your feeder down closer to the t-post where the hog panel will be sturdiest. Mid-panel will have more flex to it and if a pig feels any 'give' to their rooting they will keep at it harder.
How Exciting !! Can't wait to See them ! I Wish we had room for Pigs ! LOVE Pork
Guys thank you so much for sharing your knoledge and for the playlist you're making! i saw the chicken playlist also. But if i may, the pigs playlist, it's in the wrong order xD Thx again for sharing your life style you taught me a lot. i just mooved on my land to start my own homestad and next year chicken will be raised like you raised yours!
We were bless we bought five acres of land with fruit trees and new chicken coop and turkey coop and large pig pen already on the land...we have the chickens already we clean the large pig pen...I'm thinking before this year ends we will have some pigs...
Great job guys. I bury a plastic kiddie pool in the ground, drill a couple holes, fill part way with dirt, and fill with water. This way it holds water and they don't try to wallow elsewhere. They last about two seasons. Thanks for sharing.

That is a nice pen for them We raised pigs American Yorkshire we get them up to 800 to 900 lbs have not raised any in a while. Great video thanks for sharing God Bless
Ours are due today!! I'm so excited 😁😁
Love the shirt!
Next pig waterer you make out of a barrel consider moving the nipple up 1 ft or so, this way there is always a base of water in it that prevents them from tipping it over as they get older. Great channel!
I love your shirt.
I'm with you on the pork burgers! We raised hogs growing up and I miss it!
Oh ya dur. And hamp. Thats what I raised growing up.mmm good. I raise Hampshire and Berkshire mix now. Oh ya soup for free(turtle). Good luck with them, they are a blast
Nice setup 😃
Can't wait to see the wallowers.
I am so happy for you and jealous too! LOL We want pigs soooo bad! We’ve even tried to find a local farmer raising them organically to buy from and no one is! Ughhh I’m not giving up. I’m gonna find SOMEONE! I’d love to buy at least a half of a hog and let them raise it (no room here). Maybe a whole one but till I knew what I was getting I’d start half. Anyway, I’m super excited to see how it goes for you. Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless you all ~Lisa
So want one of those T-Shirst. ;) Great video.
LOVE YOUR T-SHIRT!!... HAHA
Hey thanks for your video. My son has a pig on our land, and Mom has to figure out ways of keeping him. I like your watering can and feeding system. Have a blessed day
I LOVETO WATCH YOU BUILD ON YOUR FARM SINCE I CAN'T DO IT ANY MORE
I used to keep box turtles! They are so fun to watch especially when they fight over strawberries!!!
good deal
Great job looks good. I like pork.
Love your shirt 😆👍
round and round he goes !!!! pigs pigs pigs !! :)
I like your music during your videos
I would love a more detailed explanation of how you built the shelter
They call those turtles Terrapins here in Oklahoma. They are land tortoises. Im told they love lettuce and other garden stuff. Im glad you didnt get him with the mower. :)

I've heard them called that here also...
👍👍
Could you keep them in the pen if you build a three sided shed and electrify the fence, I don’t have a barn. ?
fair
You're lucky to live where you can get free pallets, around here no one just gives them away, they all charge $10 apiece for them.
Everywhere down here in south Arkansas
Wish you'd do a video of how you build that little pig house out if pallets....☺☺☺
Turtles! Crazy
How much feed do you think it will take to get them to butcher size considering their time in the wooded area? What do you expect in terms of veterinary/health care for them? Do you plan to butcher them yourselves? Looking forward to following your journey with the pigs.
I like your shirt brother: PETA. (People Eating Tasting Animals) 😂🤣😅
I am one week out from bringing my pigs home! this video was very helpful! how has the pen held up? any issues with height?
Thanks for showing! I have never made a pen before so I apologise if this is a stupid question....why did you make two t-posts in the dirt for every other one, in the making of the pen?

Living Traditions Homestead LOL, somehow I had the feeling it was a dumb question! But now I know! :D. Thanks!
Love you guys videos. FYI, turtles are struck by cars throughout the warm months, but they are at special risk at this time (May & April) of year, when they are moving around looking for mates and establishing home ranges. Young males are most at risk, just trying to get some turtle butt. Good pig pen, maybe too new/nice. The pigs might be offended. LMAOI Btw, how are you going to explain to the ducks they can't go in the waterhole? I bet they will decide otherwise every time you turn around! So, did you guys build a smoker yet? I will go look, ya probably did. If not though, I bet you will soon!
Lol Peta peaple
Looks like a great setup. Why did you move from Arizona? I did, too, but I’m just curious.
Are you getting new pigs 2019?
Are you guys going to free feed them and pasture rotate them
Great job. Are you going to breed some pigs
Do you worry about predators like coyotes etc?
How many pallets did it take to build that space?

Living Traditions Homestead Real hog farmers raise hamps, spots, York’s, Chesters, landraise but please no Guinean or waddles or any of the waste of money Heritage Breeds which are merely rare... rare for a reason! They are the lowest meat producers for the feed - pure waste and they are high priced on top of it! If you do not believe me ask Aust of HomeSteady or read any of the major University Agriculture web sites

Brian Curwick I have several decades of experience raising livestock of all shapes and sizes. I’ve also encountered the two-legged jackass of your sort a time or two. By guineas, I was referring to guinea FOWL not guinea hogs. From the presentation made in this video, it’s clear that these people have experience in raising pigs, and the choice they make in breeds for their homestead and their needs should be theirs. Incidentally, a duroc cross in a rotational foraging set up for a family’s meat supply is a good choice. LTH, I wish you the best and look forward to watching more.
You should put a plactic pool because pig will get wroms, 🤢 if the play in mud😓🤢😳
lol
Finally a REAL HOMESTEADER intellectual enough to not raise guinea hogs!!! A REAL HOG FARMER!!!
@sqwrrl

Brian Curwick Why wouldn’t you keep American Guinea Hogs?
I can tell you that the duroc hog is extremely hard to keep in a pen also you will need to ring their noses I have seen them root so deep that they killed trees also you need to chain your feeder boxed I have seen a boar move a feeder filled with 500 lb of corn Good luck with them
@LivingTraditionsHomestead
6 жыл бұрын
Our plan after a week or so is to run a strand of electric wire on the inside of the pen to teach them about electric fence. This will hopefully also keep them from rooting out of the pen. I do have the feeders secured to the fence. We've raised Hampshire crosses in the past but never cross with Duroc so we will see if we like them.
@BrianBriCurInTheOC
6 жыл бұрын
Look the Duroc is one of the best domesticated modern day hogs! I raised Chester Whites but friends won many of showmanship classes with Durocs. Any boar is going to be able to move that much weight when they are hungry and excited by some females in heat! Nothing wrong with Durocs!!!
that's a ton of cash in hog panals, I don't buy them they are far to costly I cant afford $87 CND each
Hey guys KZread unsubscribed me! Don't know why they would do that but I resubed,
how we eat animals is how we will be eaten.
The only meat you guys should eat is chicken 🐓🍗 Pig meat will cloge your blood arteries in the long run 🤨😐😳😱
PORK IS THE UNHEALTHIEST MEAT YOU CAN FEED TO YOUR FAMILY !!!! GOD BLESS
