Our FAIL turned into "new bike day" for a lucky kid!

Спорт

Parts bin upgrades are when we take someone's mountain bike, go through the parts bin, and do as many upgrades as we can. Kevin mentioned a kid at the summer camp he worked at, Hugo, was pushing his bike beyond its capabilities. I said, "bring it in!".
Unfortunately, we failed miserably! The cassette, fork, and several other parts just didn't fit, and finding replacements wasn't possible to do that day. So instead of upgrading Hugo's bike, we gave him a totally new one!
Stay tuned for when we DO get the right parts in, so we can finish upgrading that old hardtail as a Berm Peak project bike.

Underbiking rules! Great way to learn how to roll in the dirt. I'm so old we rode trail on road bikes back in the ' 70s& '80s before MTBs became a big deal. Touring bikes ride dirt well too. The funniest part was hiker's reactions way back when! They'd look at us like we were aliens. After a few years it wasn't so funny anymore! My favorite bikes these days are fixed geared or singlespeed 'cross bikes. More fun than should be legal. Especially on some rocky singletrack.

They changed their business model to sell direct to consumer like Canyon, and showed that they could manufacture some really quality product while they revitalized their brand. I love these parts bin upgrades. I have a 2012 Trek Marlin GF that I've been riding for 4 years. It began life as a 3x8 with a junky front fork and cheap rims running 2.2 inch 29'rs. Now its a 1x10 with a Manitou air sprung fork with good 29x2.4 tubeless tires on nice DT swiss rims. Lotsa people said I'm wasting money. I didn't. It taught me a lot, I got to trade parts with friends and I have a lot of nostalgia. I think its a great lesson to teach the kids on our NICA team that I coach too... to not just run to the store and buy new everytime a new fad comes along. Sometimes it makes sense, but a lot of times it doesn't.
