Our Cabbage Harvest was Pitiful but Family Camaraderie and Sweet Popsicles Brightened Our Day
We finally faced the dreaded chore of uncovering the cabbage to see if it actually made anything. Disappointed at what we found, but really enjoyed spending the day in the garden with our girls here in the mountains of Appalachia.

I love watching Matt he just sits there listening to all girls talk. He pipes in every now and then. What a happy family.
I like what Corey is saying about wasting food. I think when you work close to the earth with gardens and raising animals you become very aware of how much work is involved to get food to the table. You do not want to waste.

I am a retired teacher (middle school and elementary). I love Tipper's remembrance of Corie's teacher saying she was the kind of student who made her want to be a teacher. Then Matt chimes in with Katie's the kind that makes a teacher want to retire! Lol. I have had plenty of both types! I honestly don't think Katie would make me want to retire, however! My very first public school teaching experience was not the best. I was assigned two groups of kids in middle school who had been identified as "potential dropouts" and I literally went home and cried every day!
Katie & Corrie’s banter during popsicle time was my favorite. You can tell they are the BEST of friends. Makes me wish I had twins! What a special connection.

@@CelebratingAppalachia I remember when I was in first grade my teacher was Mrs. Louise Terry. It was nap time one day and we had some new headphones with padding on them. Mrs. Terry was out of the room, and I had it in my head that I wanted to try on them headphones just to see what they felt like. I was so scared of getting caught that I hemmed and hawed and waited; finally got up the nerve and put them on. . .not listening to music or nothin', when in walks Mrs. Terry. I got my hand whipped with her ruler [this was the early 70s] something fierce while everybody else was out to recess. When my mama got her teacher's aide certification and started working at my elementary school, guess whose room she was assigned to? Mrs. Louise Terry's.

I see a good ole fashioned bean breakin in the future. When I was growing up in Tennessee we had cornshuckins, pea hullin, pea hull jelly. Picking, peeling, cutting apples from the orchard around our chicken coop and then drying them in the sun on screens we made our own souse meat between Thanksgiving and Christmas. All kinds of things most folks today wouldn't begin to understand or undertake. Neighbor ladies from out the road would visit one another and just sit down and start helping like it was their own garden being worked up. Sure do miss my grandma 👵😔
Katie cracks me up ! She's so silly I just love it !

Loved this video of your sweet family working and laughing together, sharing good memories with one another. It cracks me up that Corie and Katie loved their teachers when they were little but hated school. LOL. I can just imagine what little stinkers they were. It sounds like they got it honestly from their Daddy who took all his clothes off and ran around the room in Kindergarten resulting in him getting sent home. Lol And speaking of the disappointments of gardening, my cucumbers were growing like gang busters with blooms galore. Then I notice some the of the leaves started to turn yellow, curl up and some were even getting spots. Being new to gardening, I didn’t realize how devastating the moldy mildew can be to cucumbers. Fortunately, I have been able to have plenty to eat with our meals and I have put up several jars of pickles. I will know what to do next year and will get on it at the first sign. I hope your family enjoys the Labor Day weekend. Thanks for always making me smile.
Those kindergarten stories are hilarious
Lol, I think that was the funniest Popsicle session I've seen yet, Matt getting thrown out of kindergarten, lol.

We used to sing a song in school glee club called memories. One line was memories, pressed between the pages of my mind. Now I know what that means. At 13 not so much.

Its been so hot this summer i welcome fall and winter, i love the changing of the season, ..
Corie, when I was raising my family, any leftover veggies from supper were drained and when at room temperature, I would dump them into a ziplock bag in my freezer. Even tomatoes that were getting overly ripe, I would cut up and add in. Potatoes that were getting too old, anything like that. Because there were 5 of us, I used a gallon sized bag, but now that it is just me, I use a half gallon bag. When I am ready for vegetable soup, I just cook my stew meat and dump in my bag of mixed vegetables and nothing goes to waste. Sometimes, there would just be a serving spoon of corn or Lima beans or pintos, but it all adds up. You can do the same with fruit. Then use it for smoothies.

Some Woodpeckers bang on objects to attract a mate. I also had a Woodpecker that would visit my home each morning and bang on the siding outside my bedroom - luckily, after a few days of banging, he found his loved one, and they moved to raise a family of Woodpeckers in the woods behind my house.

Talking about a way to preserve food. When I was a boy my grandmother that lived in Kentucky used to use all of her stuff up that was in the refrigerator to make a soup and it was called burgoo. Yeah extra chicken that was left over shredded up extra hamburger if it was in it would be ground up along with all the vegetables and stuff that she needed to do and put it all together and make a big soup out of it and it was darn tasty and you could also freeze it just a part of my childhood that I don’t get anymore. My grandmother passed on she lived to be 103 years old.
This reminds me of childhood. I love when you mentioned the surprise Lillie's. My mom had them in her yard. Thanks for sharing

Sorry about the cabbage! Still so much good bounty, though, well done! Fun family times together and sharing over the popsicles.. I agree, I think that Pop company needs to sponsor you, you are a good "influencer", people are buying them up 🙂 My brother and I reminisce alot about school days too.. One of my embarrassing memories as a 1st grader was the day I was just 'over" being at school, so I faked a "stomache ache" and went to the sick room. The lady Principal came in and was on to me and questioned me if I was really "sick".. Well I stuck by my bold face lie and they called my Mom, who came and took me home. My conscience starting really bothering me and I remember walking out of school with my head down in shame. I don't remember if I ever came clean, but my Mom was no dummy either, so I may have been punished, I don't remember, lol.. Your chickens will be eating "high on the hog" as my Mom used to say with all the greens from the garden! Hoping we'll see another video with you down at Corie''s soon harvesting her garden! God bless you all and have a great week!
It was nice spending time with your family today! Thanks.

I ended up going to a local farmer and bought a case of them. I really wanted to can Danish Christmas Cabbage and so that’s what I’m doing this week. Hope you have a nice day 🤗
Sorry about your cabbages Tipper. It seems like there’s always some heartbreak in gardening. I went to harvest my beets last week and some rodent had taken a few nibbles out of every single one. I didn’t know whether to curse or cry, so I just fed the beet greens to the chickens and picked beans instead. I very much enjoy the quiet talks with you and Hubby, but your girls certainly liven things up! What a joy and treasure they are!
