Thanks, great playing and sound on any of them! To my ears the Super Tone Master sounds more homogeneous across all registers, but the New York sounds kind of more interesting ... as if it had more tonal possibilities...

After a lot of time spent, I agree with you. What makes the NY a more difficult piece for me was that I find mine to be pretty reed finicky. Thanks so much for watching!

No kidding. I was so hooked up by the Tone Master. It has a sound of a begging lady (sorry I can't put out a word).

I also have both bot the STM has a smaller tip opening 7 the NY a 7*. Both are very particular about reeds. (they need to be prepared) To me your altissimo is better on the STM and that is also my experience. The NY is better for tone shaping, but you need to watch your air. Even with the same reed the STM is more resistant nut the benefit is it is more even in all reguster. I really need to send it to be refaced. I feel the table is not as flat. I like the idea of medium chamber. One thing the NY does is you can start a subtone on Bb really low volume and has very minimal edge and not as breathy. With the STM, to do that I have to come down from a non bell note like D or Eb, otherwise it will have an edge or bark. But it is more even and won't punish you if your breath support is lacking, Great playing BTW @4:56 is when you switched to the STM for reference for future viewers so that the A-B is easier.

Thank you for sharing your set-up! To my ears, there's not much of a difference in the sound, both pieces sound great! My question would be how do they "feel" for you? Do you have to work harder on one than another? Do you deliberately change from one to the other based on some specific criteria? Please keep sharing your perspectives, thanks again!

Feel is a weird thing because each mouthpiece has something to offer. The STM was a lot easier to produce a note right away, but backed up as soon as you got on the gig, which made it difficult. The NY was a little harder to start the note, but ultimately easier on the gig because it had more room. However it is very reed finicky.

@@jimcsax excellent information here!.........between finicky reeds and neck cork, I am about to switch to the EWI! 😂 i am finally starting to realize that my horns inconsistency, has been compressed neck cork leaks and cropped out reeds! I play 8 and 10 star links !

I have throat issues from an old injury, so my physical conditioning changes and different ones feel better at different times. I will say that the NY feels better to me more often. I really like the quick response I get on the STM though. I jst can't play it as often.

Interesting that you sounded so good on the old version of the Vandoren V16 piece(kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqmLtNN_hZmplNI.html) and moved away from it because it was too small. Now moving to Otto Link, did you try the new metal V16's?

Bob Doherty Thanks Brad. I loved that mouthpiece. Interesting thing about the video you linked is that this show was the first time I really noticed myself being cramped on it. I honestly have yet to be truly as comfortable on a mouthpiece as I was on that thing. I have tried the newer Vandorens. They’re not the same. Theirs more metal. They’re heavy and as a result I swear they don’t vibrate the same if blow as freely, even on the one that’s closest to the older one.

@@jimcsax Are you still playing the NY Link? I just got one. definitely a different feel from the HR V16 I was one. More resistance, tough for me to tune. The low end seems flat if the high end is in tune but if I push in the low end is in tune and upper is sharp. I find the throat has a LOT to do with this.

Bob Doherty I have found that I get the issues you mention when the mouthpiece is a little big for me. What size NY did you get? I’m actually on a super tone master 7 right now because my throat got tired playing the 7 and 7*NY’s. I’m going to eventually get a 6*NY to see if I can go back to the NY and not have the throat issues. I needed to go small again to get my pitch, and articulation together again.

James Calandrella I’m actually playing a 6*NY. It’s getting better. When I first started on it I had to push it all the way on the cork to play in tune down low. After long tones and over tones I now have a half inch of cork showing. Also I found a Rovner lig helps with intonation and resistance.
