To anyone who is doing this, please note, you actually closing the mouthpiece + shortening the facing length. With shortening the facing length you actually brake the geometry of the facing curve, so mouthpiece will never play perfect, unless fully refaced. Sometimes the trick can work and you can feel that it became better but with using more reeds you will feel that mouthpiece has some problems. However thanks to this ( old video by Sirvalor) i got myself into refacing so thanks Sirvalor! If you wanna check the table, just take a really flat piece of metal, like feeler or caliper put it on top of the table and look to the light trough it. If you don’t see the lite between table and your tool - it’s flat. Sometimes tables are not concave but convex! And that really brings poor playing experience. Slightly concave table is not SO bad, and the matter of discussion among the refacers. But still, some of the links are flat! ( i have one) and some of the vandorens as well, so things to think about! If you really want to know more - watch Mojobari channel where he puts a lot of instructional videos about refacing.

Good points made here. Keep in mind, if the mouthpiece in question is as bad as this one, you don't really have a lot of options. If it was a very expensive piece, I would just return it. Something like an off the shelf Link however, just go for it.

I’ve had conversations with Fred Lamberson, Ron Coelho, and Dave(JunkDude) who apprenticed with Ralph Morgan. I learned that hard rubber has to cure for weeks before it can be worked. Even after it gets worked, they wait for a period of time to see if any irregularities develop in the precision facing. If a factory is cranking out pieces like crazy, they’re not producing the best mouthpieces. That’s why they have the price point they have. Thus...the higher quality pieces(Vandoren, Selmer, Jody Jazz, Wanne, etc) have more time spent on them, and cost accordingly.

Hi Sirvalorsax I'm a toolmaker and had to resurface my Otto Link Florida . I put an dial indicator on all my mouthpieces to check for table flatness it a geek thing 🤣But this Otto Link was this worst I ever seen, a big belly in the middle so I remachine it and adjusted the rails checking with a reedgeek measurement gauge. Now I have a wonderful playing metal mouthpiece. I would never ever buy another otto link mouthpiece no one should have go through this after paying good money for a mouthpiece. You spend time trying to play that darn thing and it flaw right the factory and this is one the reason we end up with having mouthpiece graveyard🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Peace out

As usual, Sir V. you've convinced some of us you can play 4 octaves using a duck call. My whole life teachers and techs acted like tweaking a mpc should only be performed by God himself, I always flatten reed tables multiple times over its playable life and don't think twice about easing mpc tables, too. Every time you fit a reed you are slowly, very slowly, flattening both. Perfect geometry is mpc specific with symmetry across the tip and matching up the rails the most critical aspects to me. That said, I don't buy a JJ or a TW or equiv. mpc expecting to work it over. For that kind of coin, It should at least look perfect right outa the box. Try rebuilding a chipped tip., folks. That should keep you busy for a while..

I have an Otto Link Tone Edge #7 hard rubber mouthpiece. I needed to flatten the table as it was quite uneven -- I watched your older video of how to do it. I think that was the first time I tuned into your channel.

I did the same thing to a CS Genesis m/p that I bought from a friend. I was surprised how much the table was out of true. I also filed the tip rail to narrow it and make the profile the same as the Legère American cut reeds which I use. The result was an improvement in my sound and a much more responsive mouthpiece.

I have purchased 4 medium priced mouthpieces (60 - 300 $) and all have failed me for ease of tone production and the ease of consistency of tone . I then found SIRVALOR- and your info of adjusting mouthpiece and reeds through sanding .----You Indicating how to adjust the tables and reeds . I have used the 2000 grid sanding on the table and reeds on my stuff and finally --I do not have to struggle for tone and its ease of consistency-- The Mouthpiece industry is disappointing new -young players. They are forcing new sax users to keep buying new and different mouthpieces because they are producing medium priced mouth pieces not with the flat table --but slightly concave -curved. When I sanded and flattened the table of 3 of my purchased mouthpieces my result was instantly pleasing for tone and consistency and ease of use. The Mouthpiece industry Knows how to exploit new users and the are doing it by not flattening mouthpiece tables , not sanding reeds to near perfection-flat . The mouthpiece and reed industry will do better for itself if music people were less frustrated with badly produced equipment. BARISAX BOB

I think for some of them, it's too expensive. Others that have really good quality control, it's really expensive. I'm glad these little tips help people out. I do want to get some higher quality adjustment tools in the future though

Gotta mention..your sound is pretty consistent regardless of the set-up. The difference is when you rated the Berg "new vintage" your sound gained more "presence". Not louder but more "up-front" without being harsh or screechy. The "body" was still there, but more pronounced. You didn't seem to notice the difference, only shrugged, as if to say... "so what?" if I could afford one I'd buy one!.

That Berg that I tried was one of the best. I just needed a larger tip opening to really fully exploit it. I was happier about it than it looked in the video, I was just bummed I got the wrong tip opening 😁

BTW...thx for the tip on the Link. Gonna try that. I've had to go to my hard rubber V16 #7 for some Chicage and EWF stuff I've been participating in, but I prefer the sound of the Link for legit and big band.

Might be better to use water with wet and dry paper - its designed that way, helps cleaner cutting + can be easily washed.

I bought a new Otto Link Vintage HR 7*. Played nice out of the box. After a couple weeks, decided to flatten the table. About 6 passes with a 1200 grit and 4-5 with and 800 grit. I could see high spots on the initial sanding. But after just those few passes, like your comment, playing just felt more comfortable and effortless. Doesn't change the tone quality at all but there is a significant difference in how much easier it is to play.

I can't find the unplated one. I have seen the ones with various plating from rose, dilver and gold, though. The price of the mouthpiece has almost doubled since I posted the video

Flattening a table is just par of the refacing proces. Once the table is flatteng, the tip opening and facing length has been change. The logical process after that is recaculate the curve and work on it till get the original numbers or calculate a better curve than it was. If not probably you are gonna find out that the resisteance has change a lot, probably the facing can lick air and the eveness in betwen registers is gone. Even just fattening a table and do it well is not that easy.

The only thing I don’t quite understand is that if you replated cheep metal mouthpiece because you were concerned about the material it was made of, is removing plating to adjust the table re exposing you to the questionable health risk of the material the mouthpiece was made of? I’m going back to hunt for that episode dealing with the materials that prompted the replaying invade I missed something.

Otto link mouthpieces are crap quality. I’ve seen that concave table, rough surface finish and even a cracked table. I wouldn’t go near such a bad product when there are so many other quality companies making good product.
