I like Glynn's cartography so much that I hired him to do maps for both my homebrew world and my newest book on military history, which will be out next year. Great to see him getting love here.

Nice review! It's always cool to see a new and well-done original campaign setting, especially one that's not system-specific.

Yeah. Hyperborea I love, but I understand that the majority of folks prefer a system agnostic setting. This humble little setting really grabbed my attention with its aesthetics and attention to detail... and fun factor. If I was going to run something other then Hyperborea, THIS would be it for sure.

@@captcorajus hmm, there are classes, spells, monsters and magic items that are in S&W Complete not in others like the B/X based games that have more limited lists of these though. More accurate to say it's broadly compatible, not system agnostic.

Welcome to the fold Cap! I love the quirky Monty Python-esque black humor that runs through his work. To me, Glynn Seal is one of the shining lights of gaming and his writing, illustration and cartography is outstanding. I also consider him a good friend and I've had him on Radio Grognard a few times. i also have all the Midderlands material. sent to me by Glynn for review and my one regret is that I can't take advantage of it as I don't get to GM all that often these days. Some day...

Hah! As someone who was born and bred in the real world version that the Midderlands is based on, this had me laughing. Trying to match up the town names on the map with the real world equivalents was fun, but best of all was the dialect guide. Spot on and takes me back to old days and school friends who really spoke like that every day. Not lived there for 30 years now so that was a real nostalgia trip.

Thank you for the informative and intriguing review. I wonder if the author was influenced by Michael Moorcock’s fantasy writing? In Moorcock’s novel “the Warhound and the worlds pain” the protagonist frequently transit between our world and the middle lands. Finally, I know you’re always looking for suggestions on what to review so, have you considered AD&D module N4: Treasure Hunt? It may be unique among dungeons and dragons modules in that it starts characters at level 0, sort of like a DCC funnel.

As someone from the Midlands myself, I'm a big fan of the setting and have been lucky enough to contribute some bits to a couple of later books in a small way - Glynn did a great job of capturing that Blackadder-esque British humour whilst still keeping the setting sinister and serious enough that it feels like a down and dirty RPG setting :)

Good juicy setting that's easily adapted to many rule sets. Probably my favorite OSR setting outside of Dolmenwood (which has a few thematic similarities). Well, better late than never, I suppose.
