58:27 I love the idea of Sun Wukong and Thor meeting, I don't think it's a matter of who's stronger, it's the fact that Sun is immortal several times over. I just imagine Thor constantly bashing him over the head with Mjolnir, cursing his name all the while, eventually they give up and get drunk and decide to hold and arm wrestling contest that breaks Midgard.

This was also a concept of What if that prophesied son of Zeus destined to overthrow him wasn’t killed. Poseidon was also the god of earthquakes, and historians have theorised that the wooden horse was actually an offering to Poseidon because an earthquake destroyed Troy's walls. From there, Homer...'embellished' the tale because, to quote good old Mr Winston Churchill, history is written by the winners, and it would be far more memorable to have a story of trickery, skill and cunning setting up a nice little sequel for Homer instead of sitting around for ten years before nature did its thing. Something i thought might be interesting

Actually Achilles was supposed to be the son of Zeus and Thetis and the one to actually kill Zeus. The only reason it didn't happen was because Prometheus warned Zeus about the danger in exchange of Zeus freeing him from the mountains of Caucasus. So Zeus and Thetis never actually had a son and Achilles was born as a Mirmidonian prince, way less powerful than he could have been and incapable of killing Zeus. Aristotle was brilliant. But like most people who founded fields of study, he was wrong about almost everything in that field. In the case of Aristotle, he founded many fields of study and got almost everything wrong in almost all of them. But he was still brilliant. I don't blame him for the fact that nobody checked his work for over 1000 years. The scientific method had not been invented yet. They just took authority as accuracy.

  • @GuiSmith

Aristotle was more of a thinker than a practitioner or experimentalist. He theorised based on a few things he saw, his predispositions to preexisting Greek culture and philosophy, and what he found interesting. As you said, he didn’t have a good way of making sure his findings were accurate or even worthwhile.

Sam, well-said. It's hilarious how Aristotle got almost everything wrong, but he still was a brilliant pioneer. PS. My favorite ancient thinker, though, was Archimedes. Now here's a mathematician and engineer whose work barely aged - in fact it was so far ahead of his time, that it didn't get noticed as much as it deserved because we didn't have the tools to appreciate its potential impact for 1500 years or so. He almost invented Calculus!

@@aidan4252 No he didn't. Not at all. He added basoc observation into Plato's reasoning from first principals. And most of those who came after him went back to the previous idea of accempting authority even though he argued against doing so and they just took his word for it. Experimentation as a concept was developed by Alhazen 1300 years later and wasn't popularized in the West until the likes of Kepler, Galileo and Newton 700 years after that. The idea of falsifiability and empirical research was developed primarily by Francis Bacon. Until you had that, you didn't really have the scientific method. So Aristotle first came up with the idea for a method for doing science reliably, but like everything else, his idea for was ultimately wrong. Still brilliant though.

@@jasondoe2596 Almost every founder of a field of study gets almost everything about it wrong. They have so little to build on. Look at Freud, for example. Nobody studies him for his scientific value anymore, just for his historical value. The founders of chemistry were alchemists trying to produce gold and magical items. Along the way, they made real discoveries that ended up being incredobly useful. I can only think of 2 notable exceptions: Einstein and Darwin. But even there, the fields of relativity and evolution by natural selection had so many prrcursors that someone (like Lorentz and Huxley, respectively) would have come up with pretty much the same thing. Still, they both produced works with which very few flaws have been found after over a century of testing and that is an incredibly rare feat.

Eh i always felt that Ares represented martial skill and raw power, rather than 'dumb war'. And Athena is the complete inverse of that, prioritizing planning and tactics over pure martial ability and skill. So, Ares is kind of the average Soldier's god, while Athena is the General's god. In my view at least. Rather than it just being 'dumb war' and 'smart war'. You can't really call focusing on skill and training dumb war because, it is smart in its own way, its just focused on one area to the detriment of another. Intense mental and physical training creates good soldiers. Good soldiers can make a good plan even better. Good soldiers can even save a bad plan. Poor soldiers make a bad plan suicidal, and make the job of the strategist and tacticians much harder and reliant on crafting a really good plan, which is not always possible. Theres also a lot that goes into most forms of battle rather than 'Take pointy thing and poke bad guy' or 'take stick and wack bad guy', it takes thought and good reaction times to adapt to what the enemy are doing as far as individual and formation tactics go.

  • @mondaysinsanity8193

Count Spartula you have to realize the lesson thats being taught in that though, the greeks prized discipline, Fraternity, etc. Over anything. Order meant survival, ares was the god of the bloodlusted badass soldier...and the lesson is hes useless because in reality he was useless and a detriment no matter hiw badass a soldier you are, you are nothing without your shieldbrothers. The greeks saying "martial skill vs. Logistics" makes no sense as they were basically the same thing to them as the greeks hardly ever had to deal with true logistics almost all battles were phalanx vs. Phalanx, there was strategy but that was seem as a continuation of the same spirit

about the whole "ancient hero + army deal i WOULD choose "Siegfried" he is as INVINCIBLE as achiles BUT his weak spots is a "leaf sized" area in the BAck of his back, and UNLIKE ACHILES he EARN it by KILLING A DRAGON, also for army i woulv choose the "romans" as modern as posible

21:50 It absolutely helps! That’s more or less how I’d study at med school. By reading it, then explaining it to another classmate. We’d take turns doing this with the same material, chiming in with insights the other might have missed, and by the end we’d have a pretty solid understanding of the concepts. Also, at 26:10... “If I was a fraud, people would have found me out by now. I don’t think I’m smart enough to fool people about it”. That’s... surprisingly helpful. Thanks, that did contextualize some things for me!
