I would love it if the first winner just went up and said, "Apparently we need to speed this up. Thank you," and just walked off. And after that, every winner who went up simply said "Thank you" and walked off.

Lin’s actually won the Pulitzer too, so he’s on the brink of being a PEGOT winner and a MacArthur Genius Grant Recipient. Unreal talent.

I don’t care about the Oscar’s. But I definitely care about how much Dan cares about the Oscar’s.

Best Picture is not decided by best average score. Here is how it works. All the number one choices are counted. If no movie receives 50%, then whatever movie receives the least first place votes is eliminated. For all the ballots cast for that last place film, the second choice on those ballots are then counted. If that doesn't result in a film receiving 50%, then the ninth place film is eliminated, and all those ballots move to their next choice. And so on, and so on, until one film receives 50% of the vote. That film wins.

This is exactly correct, Scott. I was about to type all this up when I got to that point in the video but thankfully decided to go through the comments to see if someone had already done so. This preferential voting system is much, much better than the first past the post voting system which is otherwise used most commonly. It allows for people to genuinely vote for their favourite among the field rather than strategically vote for the one they like more among the 2 or 3 early favourites to win.

@@solanki_iitgn6422 While the system's a lot more resistant to tactical voting, there are still scenarios where voting insincerely can give a preferred result - if there are three camps of voters: A>B>C, B>A>C and C>B>A, at, say, 40%, 31%, 29% respectively, then if everyone votes honestly, C will be eliminated in the first round and their supporters will push B to victory (40, 60, - ). If B and C voters vote honestly, but one in every ten in the A>B>C camp votes C>A>B instead, that would shift the first round percentages to 36, 31, 33 and eliminate B, giving A the victory (67, -, 33). On the other hand, the only way to completely prevent any possibility of insincere votes being beneficial is to have a single voter who can freely determine the outcome of the election (they will benefit by voting their favourite since whoever they vote for will win, while no-one else can do better - or worse - however they vote).

Yep, standard Alternative Vote. And what it means is that when it boils down to an obvious 'top two', instead of it being whichever happened to have the most first preferences, it's a straight race between the two, which is how it should be :) It should also eliminate first past the post in one-seat political situations too...

Love the Airplane! reference at the end. I unfortunately haven't seen many movies this year, so I can't really comment too much on who will be the winners this year, but always enjoy your takes on the subject.

I thought there were lots of great movies this year, but the one that absolutely had my jaw agape in enjoyment in the theater was Dune. The score, the cinematography, the scale...man, THAT was a film!

For as much of a disaster The Academy seems to be trying to make this years show, it’s nice to have a year where there’s actual competition.

Congrats Dan on predicting 20 out of 23 Oscar categories correct! That’s a pretty good record. Especially as he guessed correctly on all the major categories. The only three he got wrong are animated short film, short film, and best song. Clearly James Bond intro songs have maybe a bit more cache with Academy voters than most Oscar prognosticators would believe.

The shorts are indeed notoriously hard to predict. They actually killed a perfect run for the 2013 ceremony. I literally got all but one of the awards right: Animated Short. 23/24 is still my best record. Haven't gotten anywhere close since.

Going for Tick Tick Boom for editing thought the editing was fantastic, in fact just want tick tick boom to win something as it was one of my favourite movies from last year.

I’m trying to pick super safe almost everywhere this year, namely because I can’t not pick Garfield for Actor, so I’m trying hard to get enough right elsewhere to make up for that if (and quite possibly when) he loses.

Great video Dan! Mental faculties clearly at full power here! Windscreen wipers are, of course, required for those glasses, in case of stormy weather. We must take precautions in the event of possible hard times, it's only rational in this day and age.

My personal pick for editing would be tick, tick…BOOM!, but I wouldn’t be mad to see Dune win.

22:52 holy crap that's a hilariously good point. Dune is the most "mainstream" of the potential oscar winners (besides encanto/spiderman's couple categories) and audiences were familiar with it long before nominations. I'd never want them to rig awards for viewership, but Dune's awards NOT being spread out across the night is worse for retaining viewership than a regular schedule could've provided. Also I really don't wanna sound annoyingly repetitive but 11:46 you SHOULD definitely be shocked if Worst Person won the International Film award. Cuz it wouldn't make sense. Drive My Car has already won, by virtue of being named one of the top 10 films of the year, across any genre. Therefore even if DMC ranks 10th place, the other International nominees rank lower as films in the academy's eyes, regardless of the other non-genre specialty awards those films pick up. I'm excited for Lin-Manuel to get his EGOT! The song they nominated may not be the most catchy viral piece, but I'm actually glad the voters didn't seem to be influenced by the outside world's karaoke playlists (or were voting prior to popularity surge) and went with the "feelsy" track, which imo was quite good.

Just a small correction, Disney actually picked the song as their submission before a specific deadline, after which Bruno blew up. If they'd known the popularity of the song, they'd have submitted that one instead. Big Disney blunder.

@@kingofthesharks Yeah, you're right that they're allowed to submit two songs, but most studios now only submit one to avoid vote-splitting. Apparently it happened a bunch in the early 2010's where a multiple-nominated film in Best Song ended up losing to some underdog. Just looked it up and it seems Disney only chose to submit Dos Oruguitas.

Man, I wish this was out yesterday. I had to put my Oscar ballot before 5 on Friday 😩

In terms of the will wins, Dan and I are 98% aligned. Hoping this is good for my stats!

Really like your channel. Cutting out categories is a terrible idea. My favourite for the best film is Dune too.

I would imagine that if "Dos Oruguitas" wins, it would probably be either to give Lin-Manuel Miranda his EGOT or to indirectly award "We Don't Talk About Bruno" - but regardless of the reason, it would not be undeserved, anyone who speaks spanish knows how beautiful those lyrics are

The lead actress Renate Reinsve looks so much like Dakota Johnson that they could seriously pass for twins.

LMM won't be at the Oscar's either. So if he completes his EGOT he won't be there in person. His wife has covid.

The Academy always leans sentimental in the final stretch - _Power Of The Dog_ won't win BP. Two months ago, I would've said _Belfast_ - today, it looks like _Coda._ Fingers crossed for _Dune,_ either way.

@@samazwe Nah they released the 2021 Nightmare Alley in Darkness and Light. I highly recommend watching it, a lot of people told me it felt like better than color.

I’ve seen The Power of the Dog, CODA, King Richard and Don’t Look Up so my knowledge on who I think will win best picture isn’t great but if I had to bet I would go with CODA

I’d be happy with Drive My Car, Dune, Belfast or CODA winning, but happiest with CODA.

I was intrigued by the handful of anonymous ballots we've seen - a LOT of love for Penelope Cruz. Most voted for her. Another surprise was how much love for Worst Person in the World in original screenplay. And for Director there was upset about Jane's remarks - and some people shifting, mostly to Spielberg. Also a few that said things like "Well Jane will win, but I voted for Spielberg. It's a tiny sample, but still interesting. The ranked voting will certainly affect the Best Film - agree with your assessment.

The only category I'm looking forward to at this point is Best Actress, really pulling for Kristen Stewart, been saying for the last few years that I think she's one of the best actors of her generation.

Dune's an interesting film, in terms of category. I would not have thought to predict it have so many wins, ala "sci-fi" "big budget" almost "YA" type genre. But I guess it could be considered something of a "Mad Max." My predictions lean more towards "Power of the Dog" - mostly just based on how seriously the Academy takes themselves haha. We'll see tonight!

I cannot tell you how bitterly disappointed I am that Dan is not wearing the tuxedo from the thumbnail😡

Basically the Academy was put in a no-win situation for that. If the Academy didn't include a performance of "We Don't Talk About Bruno," they would've been accused by critics of not doing enough to acknowledge general audiences who've loved the song for months on end.

Interesting how Best Picture goes to Netflix vs. Apple. Harvey Weinstein showed you can influence voters. Apple has a lot of influence, they made computers that made the movies, they made Pixar, they have deeper connections in the film industry. Therefore, Coda is your winner.

It is absolutely insane that some of the categories are not live. What is even more insane is that Original score is in those categories. I put the score at the same level as the screen play and it is insane how much music is getting f*ed here.

Also they handed out Best Picture to No Country for Old Men, another de-mythologized western. And that won in '08 and Unforgiven won in '93. Oh no, it's been nearly 15 years since No Country, and the trend suggest every 15 years they give one out to a western. And this would also "fix" the mistake of snubbing Brokeback Mountain. I have a sneaking suspicion that Power of the Dog might win, I don't want it to but it has a chance.

Yeah, I commented elsewhere that, while I enjoyed TPotD, the story actually feels a lot like "been there, done that" which makes sense given it is based on a book written in the 50s I believe.

If it wins, it would literally be the first Best Picture winner in 90 years to win without both a directing and editing nomination. Even films that lacked one of those nominations usually had the other. For example, Green Book and Argo won Best Picture without Best Director nominations, but they did have a Best Film Editing nomination though.

Dune is absolutely the best film of the year. Amazing that it somehow managed to direct itself and still likely walk away with the most wins.

ABC is forcing the Academy to cut those awards. They threatened to cancel the show if they don't.

I'm going to ashamedly admit this, I don't care about these movies, I watched a Best Picture compilation and nothing pulled me in, I will probably never see any of these. I have seen Dune, Nightmare Alley and Licorice Pizza though. I still love Dan and still watched the entire video haha :)

Belfast is incredible. Jamie Dornan proves he actually is a good actor when given a good script, and Jude Hill will steal your heart as the central character Buddy. For a kid with no professional experience, he demonstrated a lot range and emotion even actors twice his age are not capable of. Adam Sandler will never give a performance as good as Jude Hill did here. In a few decades from now, his performance will be considered among the greatest child actor performances of all time, mark my words.

I think Beyoncé’s Be Alive SHOULD win, I think Billie Eilish WILL win. Beyoncé is the only person who didn’t interview or campaign

Dos Oruguitas is weird for me since by itself it's a great song but I think the failings of Act 2 in the movie make me think less of it. My vote probably ends up going to Be Alive.

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again: Andrew Garfield should win the best actor Oscar for his convincing and committed performance in “No! I am not in Spider-Man No Way Home!” Edit: I loved the Manny Mota post-credits gag. I don’t know which of us is the bigger dork. Me for expecting that joke as soon as you popped back on, or you for not disappointing. 😂👍

I SOOOOOO want Lin to complete his EGOT, but I think they will give Beyonce the Best Song award, Encanto will get Best Animated Feature, and Drive My Car will get Best International Film so they can give another movie Best Picture. Also REALLY want CODA to get any of the awards because even though he didn't get individually nominated, I just want to see Eugenio Derbez celebrating.

I want her to win, but I really don’t think Beyoncé will win for this one. She didn’t interview or even post this song on her social medias. I think LMM really has a chance for the EGOT this year

@@acewingate6993 that's true. I was thinking that because the Academy are trying to appear to younger audiences, they would try and get more appeal by giving it to her. And this is not to discredit her, all songs this year are great!
