    I also didn't love 'Encanto' as much as everyone else seems to 👀. It was a good movie but I think my expectations might have been too high given how much everyone (on the internet) seemed to rave about it. My personal pic would be Mitchell's (I haven't seen 'Flee' yet). I also agree with most of your predictions too. best supporting actress everybody seems to have Ariana DeBose but I think it will be Elllis for King Richard and even Kristen Dunst as a dark horse for POTD. Acting is not only how well you can emote but also how well you can play that character. And if Ellis gave as good a performance as Smith what more can you do ? Its a much tougher fight. Best Actress is still a 3 way fight between Colman Chastain and Stewart. Stewart is dark horse but Colman was really strong and I see her winning. Have not seen Cruz. Interesting as how you mention that CODA needs to win adapted screenplay which clearly presents a tough choice for Academy. Whether its the quality or the impact ? CODA is running high on its impact. But POTD was not over nominated. It deserved all the nominations. I mean maybe Jesse Plemons was one too many and there Jared Leto should have been nominated. But acting picture, direction, screenplay. It deserved it. It is certainly the best made film of the year. But that is the brilliance of CODA that its theme and sweetness and the fact its an underdog give it the edge. For CODA the best would mean the word subjectively and not objectively where you are seeing if if it ticked all boxes.

    Totally agree with your take on song category, last time I remember it going to a song that was actually an integral part a movie was “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow, and it REALLY drives me crazy when a nominated song was only the end credits song😡. But we are talking about an organization that thinks one of the most important narrative tools of cinema, editing, doesn’t deserve to be in the main telecast 🤬!

  • @oklaclarinet

    @oklaclarinet

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well since "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," here are a few examples: "City of Stars" and "Shallow" provide an increase in romantic tension for the main couple. "Man or Muppet" and "Let It Go" provide a key moment of introspection for one or more of the lead characters. And lest we forget "Remember Me" from Coco, one of the best uses of music in recent movie history, which is not only the emotional heart of the movie, but also the single element that resolves the entire plot of the movie.

  • @kid89r

    Yes! Go Dune! I'm also rooting hard for it! I hope it wins at least in the 5 categories where it's the big favourite. It definitely should win Best Picture too, but since they snubbed Denis Villeneuve for director (which was insane) it has little chances for Picture. I did love CODA too, so I'd be really happy if it wins Best Picture, it could be the Green Book of this year. The Worst Person in the World would be my pick as well for International Feature, I didn't have high expectations going into it, but it's really a special movie, one of the best surprises of the year for me. There's no way Drive My Car doesn't win it though. Flee is a movie that I've seen very recently and it is my pick for best animation, maybe it should win best documentary too, but since I didn't see the other nominees I can't really tell. Encanto will probably win though. The surprise might come in the best actress category indeed where I could see either Kirsten Stewart or Penelope Cruz winning, but Jessica Chastain is still the favourite and she's kind of overdue for an Oscar.

    Great video, as always. 🖤 I am hoping for lots of unexpected outcomes! I will be so happy if ‘Worst Person in the World’ gets screenplay, and if ‘Drive My Car gets adapted screenplay, international feature, and director. Final “hopediction”: ‘Dune’ for best pic. If the night unfolds this way, then it will join my top 2 favorite Oscars ceremonies: 1) when ‘Parasite’ swept (I legitimately threw my arms in the air and cheered with each Bong Joon-ho win; I hope that his translator was paid overtime that night) and when in 1991’s year it was ‘Beauty and the Beast’ vs. ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. I mean c’mon, that’s awesome.

    I actually like the best original song category, but only if they nominate songs that fit in with the film and are not just written for the end credits. The only categories that are really making me go back and forth between 2-3 movies are both screenplay categories and the best editing. Those categories this year is the most difficult to predict because they had different winners in the precursors.

    I was lucky to see everything nominated except 3 movies: Cyrano, Writing with Fire, and When We Were Bullies. The Live Action Short that I'm rooting for is Ala Kachuu - Take and Run. It was something that I never knew was going on. For the Animated Shorts, Bestia was so creepy and strange, I would be happy if that took the award. CODA hit me really hard, so any awards it garners will be fine with me. I did like Hans Zimmer's score for Dune but really appreciated what Johnny Greenwood did to Power of the Dog. Finally, I wish they would add a category for Title Sequence. Just me 2 coppers.

    Interesting to see CODA being the favourite to win BP in a recent surge. I guess with the ranked voting system of the Oscars, a heartwarming crowd pleaser is the way to go. Re: Original Song…being a musical fan, I think it’s a big category for musicals and some movies where the songs are strongly tied to them. Some performances I enjoyed and remembered are: “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted, “Skyfall” from 007: Skyfall, and “A Love Before Time” from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This year, it’ll be a lot of fun to see “We don’t talk about Bruno,” which is not even nominated. 😂

    While 'Dune' certainly is the likeliest winner for Production Design and for Cinematography; I, too, wouldn't mind 'Nightmare Alley' coming out ahead. But, I'd also be very happy if 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' won. It's bold use of Expressionistic design and black and white cinematography are marvelous. 'Nightmare Alley' uses film noir to great effect (with noir being a sort of sub-genre of Expressionism, as well). This isn't to take anything away from 'Dune' - it's excellent - but, I wouldn't mind a shake-up, either. :) You're probably right about Costume Design going to 'Cruella', but it absolutely should go to 'Nightmare Alley' (just my opinion). All others, I pretty much agree. :)

Not because I didn't like the movies, it has been so disappointing how the Academy Awards has been behaving, lately. I still want to see Spenceer, CODA, Tick, Tick, Boom and Drive My Car, but I have very little interest in The Eyes of Tammy Faye (I lived through that mess, not sure I want to relive it in movie form). Ugh. I think your picks looked great. I'm a massive Dune fan, too. So, obviously, I want Dune to win as many awards as possible. I saw The Power of the Dog and was very impressed with it. Saw West Side Story and really liked it. Not sure why it didn't do well at the Box Office. My wife and I really loved it. Once the night is over, we will go back and watch all the winners. SO, we may have to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye. What did you think about the Academy not giving a ticket to the Oscars to Rachel Zegler, then even when she contacted them...they said no, but then when the public found out about it...they invited her and is allowing her to present. Goodness, some of the presenters are not even in the movie business. What a debacle IMO. Again, thank you for all your work on this channel. We are also praying for Ukraine and for the peaceful resolution of the war...and the defeat of Russia. All the best from our family to yours (here and in Ukraine).

    I don't really care about The Oscars. Just wanted to show the video love, and see how good your predictions are :) The director & movie categories are always such interesting ones. Because how can a movie be nominated, but not the person responsible for putting everything together? Of course that raises the problem of movie & director categories are identical. I can stomach easier that the movie is not nominated, but the director is than the other way around. I don't have answers. I am just thinking loudly.

Dos Oruguitas is much more memorable, but We Don't Talk About Bruno would have won, had Disney submitted it.

    The Academy tends to lean sentimental over the critical favorite in the final stretch - I doubt _Power Of The Dog_ will take BP. Two months ago, I would've said _Belfast_ for the win - today, it looks like _Coda._ Fingers crossed for _Dune_ as a breakthrough nod for the genre. Campion seems poised for BD but Spielberg deserves it, imo. _WSS_ is an astonishing technical achievement. Best Original Screenplay: not a great film but I see _Don't Look Up_ taking it. Or _Belfast._ _King Richard_ is the best of the bunch, imo. I see Kidman taking BA - it's a prestige, industry insider role. Best Actor is tough. Smith is positioned but Cumberbatch might inch ahead. Of the group, Denzel is my top pick - and he's past due for #3 after _Fences._

    I'm a musician, and I think song is just as important as score. If you think end credits songs have nothing to do with the movie, then you are not paying attention to the movie. Your contention about Best Song winners being only over the end credits is ridiculous since end credits outside a couple of frames (with a few notable exceptions) weren't really a thing until the 1970s, and a rough estimate of the songs in the last 40 years is that over half of them played either over the opening credits or during the main narrative.

    I just don't have the confidence to pick CODA, mainly because I don't have the confidence to predict the biggest upset in the history of the Academy Awards. And make no mistake, a film winning BP with no DGA nomination, no Film Editing nomination, and only three nominations total would be just that.

  • @Windupchronic

    @Windupchronic

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not really. Winning without a DGA nomination is rare, but films have won Best Picture without a Best Director Oscar nomination. We've had more than once where the DGA _winner_ was not nominated for the Oscar. More than one film has won Best Picture without an editing nomination; that's little more than a weird statistical anomaly of recent history that people like to throw out at parties; winning Best Picture without a _Screenplay_ nomination is far more rare and relevant. That almost never happens going back to the inception of the Oscars. It's extremely rare. The last one was Titanic. The previous one before that was The Sound of Music. As for number of wins, Grand Hotel won Best Picture and that was its one single nomination. Literally. Feel free to look it up. It had one nomination, Best Picture, and won.

    @@Windupchronic 1. Only one film has won BP without a DGA nomination in about 70 years (Driving Miss Daisy, which had a Film Editing nod and nine nominations). Yes, films have won with no Directing nod at the Oscars, but rare is an extreme understatement when it comes to the DGA stat. 2. Only one film has won without an Editing nomination in about 40 years (and Birdman was made to look like it was made without editing, so it's understandable). 40 years is "recent history"? That's nearly half of the Oscars' existence. 3. No film has won BP with less than five nominations in nearly 90 years. And even the 5-nominations BP win is somewhat rare. Pretty easy to see why CODA winning would indeed be an enormous upset. No film has ever broken all of these at once. Shakespeare in Love and Crash may have been surprising, but they followed the "rules," while CODA would have to break most of them.

    @@hawkeye7246 But there are always "this has never happened before." Like, Sophia Loren can't win Best Actress because no foreign language speaking role has ever won an acting Oscar. And then she did. Parasite can't win Best Picture because no foreign language film has ever won Best Picture. And then it won. Marcia Gay Harden can't win the Oscar because she wasn't even nominated for the SAG: and then she won. You can find a statistic to support any argument you want, but ultimately it comes down to what people are feeling, and there's no statistic that can measure that.

    @@Windupchronic Exactly. People seem to be predicting its win based on emotion, which is usually not a great barometer, while ignoring the logic of the situation. As for a Foreign Language Film winning BP, I don't think that's a great comparison, but that always seemed inevitable (Several have been nominated for BP, but it always seemed a matter of waiting until there was one popular enough to win), and it's only one stat (and again, I wouldn't even really call that a "stat"). We're talking about three very long-standing stats breaking at once. But who knows, maybe this will be the year where emotion wins the day, and causes these major stats to crumble. It won PGA, so it clearly plays well on a preferential ballot (though there have been three times in just the last few years where they didn't match), but again, with all of these massive hurdles in its way, I just don't have the confidence that some do in regards to predicting the collapse of so many stats at once. And that's not even to mention the more minor stats like not getting a Screenplay nod at the GGs (the BP winner has gotten that for the last 16 years) or not being a popular winner with the critics (BP winners usually have several wins from critics groups). I would love for CODA to win (it would be a much better pick than Dog, which has no hurdles in its way), but I just have too much difficulty predicting that big an upset.

  • @Windupchronic

    @Windupchronic

    @@hawkeye7246 No, you have it backwards. The Oscars have always been an emotional event, not a logical one. That's why How Green Was My Valley beat out Citizen Kane for Best Picture, or Green Book beat out The Favourite and Roma, Shakespeare in Love wins over Saving Private Ryan. People vote their emotions, not logic.That's why so many tearjerkers win, like Terms of Endearment, Ordinary People, Dances with Wolves, The English Patient. You can use all the statistics and history you want, but once it becomes clear the voters are having an emotional reaction to something, you kinda have to throw it all out the window.
