I heard the lamest excuse for this. Apparently their are some people who believe Villeneuve didn't get nominated because they're saving that award for him when part 2 comes out. Denis Villeneuve did get a DGA nomination. So he has more supporters in the directors guild but not enough in the academy. This happens every year. DGA nominees rarely match 5 for 5 with the Oscar director nominees.

@@ImpressionBlend Blasphemy! LP was a MASTERPIECE. DUNE was technically/visually remarkable, but a complete & utter BORE storywise. Maybe I'd like it more a 2nd time around, but I found it just as dull as Lynch's version (though obviously far superior technically). LP had me enraptured & spellbound from beginning to end (agree with all the positives in your review, 100% disagree with every single negative). But if anyone should be swapped for Villeneuve, it's Branagh for Poor Man's ROMA. Actually, just keep PTA and Yamaguchi & replace the other 3 with Del Toro, Trier, and Julia Ducournau (I'd easily put her ahead of Campion and TITANE ahead of TPOTD as a movie). At any rate, Villeneuve will probably end up winning for the 3rd DUNE (ala Peter Jackson), so don't despair too much, you'll just have to wait. Personally, I think he was robbed of a nom AND win for his TRUE masterpiece, BLADE RUNNER 2049, so can't be too surprised he didn't make it in for this.

Ruth Nega or Catriona or Ann Dowd could have been nominated over Judi Dench. She's talented but her role in Belfast or even her dialogues were not really that memorable. As much as I respect Disney and Pixar's offerings every year, the recent streak of Lord and Miller Sony films actually get me excited. Their style is so bold and original and genuinely different than other 3D animation, and I truly think that what they're doing is to 3D animation what the Disney Renaissance was to 2D animation.

To answer your end of vid question, we have a recommended 2 videos leading up to the Oscars: 1) Evaluate the directors nominated, and arrive at who you would pick as best director now that Denis Villeneuve is woefully not among them-people would love to know your pick! 2) do the exact same thing with the International Feature category And if you opt not to, no offense taken )) Also, awesome nails, jewelry, and moonstone ring!

I'm with you on Villeneuve. Maybe a subjective piece comparing Dune to the films who were actually nominated. I know you can do it without being petty. After all, Dune is nominated for every important category except Director. The other nominations would never have happened if Denis hadn't directed that film. Sorry. That was all emotion. I don't normally rant, but it felt good to blow off steam.

I also liked The Long Goodbye with Riz Ahmed. He's having quite a year with Executive Producing Flee and the Live Action Short. It seems like more mainstream actors are jumping in the Live Action Shorts. Oscar Isaac in The Letter Room last year and Riz Ahmed this year. I don't know if that is good or bad. To me Shorts should be vehicles for up and coming movie makers.

Honestly, my big Best Picture surprise is that they nominated a FULL TEN FILMS for the first time since 2010, instead of "up to 10." My guess is that because of current events, 2021 was such a big comeback year, that they had to do it. It's funny you mention Flee, because I still stand by my theory that the reason for that number being changed is because in the first two years of 10 nominated films, two animated films got nominated, Up and Toy Story 3. I know Flee is a different type of animated movie from those two, and Beauty and the Beast, but their bias with animated films is historically pretty bad, worse than personal preference. The wins and nominations for Best Animated Picture often feel safe at best, which often makes me wonder if they even watched them.
