Very true. He was the heart of The Social Network and I felt like Jesse Eisenberg was undeservingly praised for his so-so performance (watch his other stuff AND interviews; I'd call him a one-trick pony to be honest). Then he was rightfully nominated for single-handedly transforming what would have been just another WWII movie into an extraordinary moviegoing experience with Hacksaw Ridge and, if the Oscars were only about the quality of the work - not studio politics and succumbing to the public's love for some performers (particularly in the acting categories), he would definitely have won. Not to mention his spectacular work in Never let me go, which if I remember correctly was a movie that excited some mostly because of Keira Knightley, who's, you know, okay in it, sure, but absolutely nothing even halfway close to what both Andrew and Carey Mulligan did there.

Was Belle eligible for a 2021 nomination? If so, then now I am disappointed too. I thought a traditional film needs at least one theater viewing in the U.S. to qualify tho I am unsure as to what time frame. Belle only came out in January 2022 in my U.S. region, so I thought it made its chances even worse. Maybe there was a NY or LA limited screening I am unaware of. 15:42 as much as I like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” I think “Dos Oruguitas” is probably the best song from Encanto to have nominated. I recently watched an interview with Lin-Manuel Miranda and he talked about the context of that song and why it’s in Spanish. Not just that it’s a good song, but it was used very VERY effectively by having the lyrics match the scene that even non-Spanish speakers can get a good idea of what’s going on. WDTAB is more of the “Hakuna Matata” or “Under the Sea” of this movie, I think even LMM didn’t realize how big that song would be.

Bruno is amazing with all the changes in voice and pace and the madrigal (heh), which is when all the voices/verses are seamlessly juxtaposed. Dos oruguitas is indeed the heart of the movie though, and I cannot even remember the scene without crying. Young abuela on the floor desperately screaming at the sight of Pedro being killed with that song in the background is the most heartbreaking thing I've seen on film in a long time.

Outside of Denis Villenuve not getting the Best Director nom, my biggest snub had to have been in the Best Animated feature category. No "Belle" by Mamoru Hosoda. Instead we have 2 Disney pics. Really disappointed since I personally think "Belle" is one of the best animated movies of the year. Really made me cry in the big climax. (Also, would've been great to see one of the songs from "Belle" nominated for Best Original Song, too. Aw well.)

Of all the categories, Best Animated Feature is probably the least prestigious. It started off with interesting, if not deserving picks (Shrek, Spirited Away) but now it's just which Disney/Pixar movie is the most poplar. Into the Spiderverse is the rare exception where a movie was rewarded for its animation style and storytelling, but when they completely snub innovative films like The Lego Movie or just give the occasional nomination (but never a win) to something that wasn't made for Western audiences its clear that quality doesn't really matter. The category is essentially just a way for Disney to get Oscar glory.

Easiest explanation I have for Villeneuve is the academy's sci-fi bias. Dramas always are overrepresented in 'the big 5' categories. I think they judge sci-fi genre primarily as "for technical awards". One of the easiest ways for the academy to reconnect with audiences is for them to learn that there can be dramatic value in a movie set in space.

    A) Covering more films overall and recognizing more than just the top 5...also bloating the show a bit. B) Because it's not the kind of film the Academy remotely cares about unless it checks a few boxes like Black Panther did. That movie was great, but was it Oscars great? Not really. And this year...it wouldn't hurt so much if not for the fact that films like Don't Look Up and House of Gucci DID get all these nominations.
