So, monthly wrap-ups are back by popular demand! It's been a while, but with so many movies coming out for the rest of the year and so many of you asking what I think about all of them - I think having a monthly roundup video is a good plan. In June my attention belonged to horror, thrillers, and Baz Luhrmann. But what about you? What have you been watching? Let me know in the comments!

I think the love for Black Phone stems from a few things. 1) The performances and characters are consistent and both Hawke and the child actors are doing great work 2) It's a refreshingly simple straightforward story that keeps the runtime tight (God it's nice to see a movie that's not 2 hours and 38 minutes long for a change) 3) True Crime is very in vogue these days and this would attract the true crime crowd 4) it's a very fleshed out period movie that feels like it's authentically set in the 70s, not just a neon nostalgia based version of the 70s (like Stranger Things is with the 80s) 5) The story by Joe Hill may be simple, but the emotional beats work and it's never dull... I'll also say I viewed this more as a thriller than a horror movie. With the exception of a few scenes it really doesn't feel like horror, but it makes a fun psychological / supernatural thriller.

I completely disagree with her about The black phone. It was a refreshing thriller/horror that didn't cheat you. All meat and no fat. It's efficient, clever and the suspense is done well throughout because Scott Derrickson has a good grip on the material.

@@rocky8838 Yeah I think it's one of the stronger movies to come out this year so far; I was surprised she didn't care for it. Again, I definitely felt it was more thriller than horror, maybe she was just expecting it to be scarier? I usually tend to agree with her on most things, but on this hot take and on her Baz Luhrmann love, I gotta 100% disagree.

@@jessefriesen9121 For me it was such a cool experience because I am tired of tentpoles taking up space in the theater instead of smaller films like this that are so much better. For example, I don't get the love for Top Gun: Maverick. I thought it was fun for what it was, but it's still a very safe blockbuster with the exact same mechanics as any Marvel movies, so for people to praise it while criticizing those movies feels so strange to me. Of course, Maverick does the cameos and easter eggs with a little more care, but there are no surprises, the characters are all two dimensional and say exactly what you expect them to say and there's no sense of danger. The third act has 3 Deus ex machina moments within the course of 20 minutes, for crying out loud! I can deal with one, but when they take turns saving each other it sucks any sort of danger out of the whole situation. That being said, I have yet to see a Baz Luhrmann movie since I'm not a fan of musicals, but I am interested in seeing Elvis.

I really enjoyed watching this video and hearing your summary reassessments of previously watched films. I find your reviewing style to be nuanced, insightful, incisive, and particularly good at excavating the layers of a film whose treatment may or may not produce a cohesive and interesting overall result. This level of subtlety is actually quite rare among KZread commentators and really helps the viewer to understand and respect your point of view, to the extent that it becomes almost irrelevant whether one disagrees with you or not! She also was a die-hard Elvis fan and would have LOVED this movie, so I’m glad you enjoyed it so much. I also don’t really understand the seemingly universal praise for The Black Phone. I liked it enough as a random movie that I went to see without ever having watched a trailer, but I certainly didn’t LOVE it the way a lot of other people have been. Awesome video once more, i do enjoy your take on all these stories…just on more suggestion: if that platform uses a 5-star scale (like imdb and many more) stick to it, don’t over complicated with grades out of 10, as hard as it may be for all the balkan friends (romanian fan here). And yes, would totally love for you to make a top 10 best movies of the year so far 🥰

  • @ImpressionBlend

Thank you! Honestly, it's just because when I review movies I grade on a 10-point scale, so if I rated something an 8/10 it feels weird for me to say 4/5, especially if I made a video review in which I gave it an "out of 10" rating that I'm mentioning in the wrap-up. I do understand it can be a little confusing though, and I'm sorry.

Marianna regarding Luhrman: My mother before her death would watch Baz's Australia over and over. And while I found it interesting I could never figure out what she was seeing in it. And I suspect that maybe the rest of his oeuvre would have left her scratching her head, except Strictly Ballroom. I thought Moulin Rouge was one of the most important film musicals ever. Redefining the genre into a postmodern configuration. Making it relevant again. (Though I have lots of issues with it.) R + J I too felt was indeed very 90s. I didn't hate it, but I didn't fall in love with it. And it felt like it was completely connected to the late 90s teensploitation culture. Though imperfect, I really like Sinister, I suspect I'll appreciate The Black Phone too. Why? I think this might be both a generational thing. I think the reason many younger fans love it is because it hits that Slenderman nerve, except it's genuinely eerie. I've never gotten how anyone could find the creepypasta vibe scary. But then again I've noticed that the word 'creepy' has taken on some very odd connotations in the last 20 years. How did clowns, puppets, dolls, old photos of Halloween masks, etc. move from the normal culture to the realm of the 'creepy'. I'm old enough to remember a world before all of these things were called 'creepy'. I've narrowed down the answer to being something to do with age (girls often call older men and older habits of familial touching 'creepy' now) and especially the homemade. One thing that all of these mutated things have in common is that they used to be homemade, thus imperfect, but CGI culture has so perfected scary masks, toys, animation, etc. that we now have a couple generations who are genuinely creeped out by the old and handmade. I think it also has to do with texture. And the fact that people live so close to the uncanny valley now, that the older attempts to get there strike them as well... creepy. Anyway I'm going on too long, I've got a video planned to deal with this phenomenon. And why do I like it? Because I am also of an older generation, so for me the 80s & 90s horror films seem cheesier compared to 70s films. And not that scary. But Sinister felt like a throwback to something older. Hence the creepy vibe too. And finally just one word about ballet films... YES! I am looking for a complete 1966 version of Balanchine's movie (not stage) version of A Midsummer Night's Dream with Suzanne Farrell. Low quality clips exist. But this was originally shot on film. I'd love to see a Blu Ray restoration. Thanks for prodding a few more thoughts.

Re: "clowns, puppets, dolls, old photos of Halloween masks" - it's the frozen face, I think, especially the eternal smile combined with the retro aesthetic. I don't have any proof of this theory, that's just my take on it. I don't think any of these things are creepy by definition, but there is certainly an eerie quality to a lot of them because they look so different aesthetically. I remember growing up and thinking stuff from my mom's generation's childhood looked strange, so I don't think this is a new phenomenon.

@@ImpressionBlend That's an interesting thought. I think this might also relate in some way as to why older faces in school yearbooks always look so weird to us. I do feel though, that the younger we are these days, the more the handmade con feel strange. By the way I did a deep dive study on the dark clown phenomenon in my video from several years back called Joker: King of the Dark Clowns. And I have spent quite a while interviewing European puppeteers, who are always surprised by the creepy remarks. Then again they will often lean into it as a mode of communication. My friends the Quay Brothers (Have you seen their films?!?) told me that the puppet, like the mask, is fascinating to them precisely because the mask is hard to read. Which backs up your thoughts. If you want the best creeps, check out their short videos, especially Street of Crocodiles.

Funny, I’m the complete opposite. I was vastly disappointed by Elvis and found it super formulaic, hollow, and weak in terms of music icon biopics, and was pleasantly surprised by The Black Phone and found it thoroughly gripping and extremely effective in terms of story, characters, and tension. The child actors especially impressed the fuck out of me and Ethan Hawke was perfect as the villain.

To short circuit any remarks you may hear about Tremors: it is a fun movie and little more but in a sea of poor or disappointing movies fun is king. Although I have to say that the other movie you referred to as fun, They Live, I was less impressed with. It's a superficial movie, sort of a generalized conspiracy theory, with no depth or insight. I have to admit that in a way it is prescient since it prefigures much of what we see today in politics where one group calls itself the "real" America and sees the other group as demons and monsters set on destroying them.

ELVIS depicts a Faustian bargain narrated by Mephistopheles, pal, parasite, and always piratical Col.Thomas Parker. Fated death against star crossed destiny, caucasian entree to mainstream music, cultural birthright or theft, immoral predatory sensuality; all packaged and tied tight. TOP GUN box office muscle will hustle, just a silly prequel to a sequel. Mickey Mouse nobody gets his ass shot off slick shit flickdom. A lot of Baz such as Moulin Rouge missed; though orchestral score of film past fondly recalled.
