Marlee Martin was the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Oscar (and ultimately win), Troy Kostur is the second deaf actor to be nominated for an Oscar. Ironically, both Troy and Marlee played couples in CODA and now they're both the only deaf actors that's an Oscar nominee (with Marlee winning) I just found this as a funny coincidence

@@ChrolliForever because the role of Anita is nothing more, you can't expect Spielberg and DeBose to change the character's personality, just to differentiate it from Rita Moreno, that's ridiculous and a disgrace towards the source material. Phoenix and De Niro played a different version of their predecessors because the point of view for their characters is completely different, De Niro literally plays a younger version of Vito. What kind of difference were you expecting from Anita? Both Rita and DeBose did a great job. You expect Anita to be a psychopath or racist or a mass murder in Spielberg's movie just to differentiate it from the old one?? and Rita herself praised DeBose's work. There are only few people who can do Anita justice and that is Rita and DeBose. What's in the source material, stays in the source material, that's about it. Let's just say you are tasked to make a second adaptation of West Side Story, you got the script, you got the actors, you got the budget, you got the costumes, and everything else, would you ever dare to change Anita's storyline and personality just to differentiate it from the original movie and the Broadway show??? How would the fans of the show and original movie react to that???

Andrew was a complete whole package in Tick Tick Boom. Singing, dancing, subtle, emotional, chaotic perfo. Still don't know how Smith has more percentage to win. Mostly bcuz of his long career. It's more like a Honorary award than Best Actor

So in anger he pinned a TV executive against a wall and called him a cunt and a motherfucker, than he said “I don't give a fuck who you are. Who on earth had the fucking audacity to take out the Best Actor's poem? You fucking piece of shit. I'll make sure you never work in Hollywood” he later apologized after he calmed down but it was still pretty shitty.

I just can't understand how someone could vote for CODA over The Power of the Dog. CODA is a nice film with good acting, but that kind of films are being made each year and I would argue that CODA is not even the best from that bunch (e.g. C'mon C'mon is for me maybe even more heartwarming with equally great performances). The Power of the Dog is the movie that stays with you for days (unlike CODA which gives you few feel good hours and that's it, after that you forget about the movie) , the amount of craftsmanship that was put into this movie is outstanding and performances are amazing, it's really by far my favourite best picture nominee.

For the past few months I was convinced Power of The Dog was winning BP, however I was researching and I noticed that in the last 10 or 15 years they only gave the BP oscar to the most nominated movie of the year 2 or 3 times. Which makes me believe Power of the Dog is not winning BP, so I changed my prediction to Dune, since it has a lot of nominations too, its going to be the movie with more wins of the night, and might be an "Argo" scenario where they didn't nominate Affleck for best Directing but he won Best Picture anyway, so I think this might happen with Dune this year. But the fact that CODA is winning so much stuff is making me think that there are 3 movies (POTD, CODA, Dune) that might win BP now. I don't remember other year where there were 3 movies with high potencial to win the BP award.

Plus, The Power of the Dog is *very likely* to be at least in the top two in a lot of the categories its nominated in: Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor and Actress, Screenplay, Cinematography, Score. I think underestimating its appeal among the majority of the branches, including with the international membership, is a mistake some seem to be falling for.

Ot needs the most 1 votes by far, but when its hasnt, it will mot winning. Coda will be in nearly all ballots in nr. 1-3 I think.. PGA and SAG ensemble are very major precursors. Not to mention CODA stole screenplay at the BAFTAS from POTD. Obviously CODA gained momentum after the oscar nominations and it's capable to break the rules!

Seen everything but CODA but will open this weekend in my area. I love it when a small arty film wins.

Sadly, it will. The Worst Person in the World is the real winner though, the one people actually love and the one that will be remembered.

In regards to the screenplay categories, I feel like the last few years they’ve been awarding films that they loved but that won’t win Best Picture. Things like Promising Young Woman, Get Out, The Father, etc. it’s also a category where they’ve been able to recognize longtime controbutors to Cinema like Spike Lee with Blackkklansman. I think CODA and Belfast fit those categories respectively, which is why I think those are your winners and TPOTD is the BP winner. Just feels like TPOTD has to win more than just picture and Director

Funny thing is that Little Miss Sunshine had the power to achieve a forth nomination with a CHILD (Abigail Breslin) in Supporting, while CODA did not with a previous Oscar winner in the same category (Marlee Martin), yet still, CODA looks like a winner, while Little Miss Sunshine was actually never there. And all that has to do with the popularity of the runner up, Power of the Dog is hated among many, while The Departed is one of the most adored film of all time.

As a guy who loves editing I really feel like 'Tick, tick...BOOM!' had the best editing in 2021 and the way movie is edited actually makes some of the scenes work better (for example the 'I feel bad' scene). So, even though, the film is not nominated for Best Picture I still hope it wins. I mean if 'CODA' with 3 nominations could win Best Picture, why couldn't the movie with Best Editing and 2 nominations win best editing?)

Personally, I’m rooting for either Paul Thomas Anderson or Kenneth Branagh. PTA because I thought that movie was so expertly crafted with so much vision, and Kenneth branagh because he’s been such a mogul for so long and it feels like this movie is the…what’s the word I’m looking for…like “hoorah” of his career? Almost like a celebration of his life and the fact that he’s made it this far. Idk I think it would be a cool moment, but obviously I’d be happy with any of the wins. Spielberg getting it would be a delight, but it’s more than likely going to Jane Campion, which is also understandable. #OSCARSLOVE

Nightmare Alley is winning Production Design. Best Pic nom? The Academy has love for the film and the movie is BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED. The Garden, fun house, Cate B.'s office. Also won the Art Directors Guild Award for Period Piece which has historically been the best indicator of that Oscar Category. Dun is sweeping but won't win everything and people will want to give other movies stuff so for all those reasons. Also when u think Dune: you think Score, VFX, Cinematography but NA is focused on its PD. Nightmare Alley wins Best Production Design.

I still can’t believe Coda or Power Of The Dog is winning best picture over West Side Story. Damn you Ansel!! 😭

Gotta be honest, I had no idea about Ansel until yesterday, but I still wouldn't have voted for West Side Story. I've seen all 10 movies and I have it in last place of the 10. I was not happy with that movie.

@@Johnnyiswhere Boring is relative. Drive My Car is three hours and definitely tested my patience, but it's arguably the best film of the ten. I wouldn't vote for it for Best Picture, but if I'm being completely honest with myself, I probably should.

@@Johnnyiswhere Oh, 2017 and 2011 stand out to me immediately as far worse. I think there are a handful of movies this year that could legitimately stand the test of time. But 2011: War Horse, Midnight In Paris, Moneyball, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close? Really? The Artist won, and it's... fine. It's basically a silent movie remake of A Star Is Born without the guy committing suicide at the end and a cute dog.

I really loved Writing With Fire, hope it wins best documentary

I don't know if you guys will ultimately be wrong about picture, but your line of thinking is perfect. I'm going to stay with Power of the Dog with the same reasons you talked about in the beginning, but I'm taking the main decision based on the international committee. I believe they are going to stay with TPOTD.

Big chunk of the international Academy is british, and they went for CODA in screenplay.

@@oskari7121 yup, even though not only British, and they didn't nominate CODA for Best Picture there. Still, I think CODA takes Screenplay at the Oscars

CODA is heartwarming but too light! I can't believe the Oscars love this movie more than Tick, Tick... Boom!

the fact that CODA, a very overrated movie, could win over POTD, Belfast, Licorice Pizza, Drive My Car or WSS is mind-blowing. hopefully the oscars get it together

I just watched CODA, and it is just a film with cheesy cliché storyline - a girl found her talent in the middle of a crisis and family drama eventually got her way through her dream. Such storyline has been done so many times. Billy Elliot was one of them, but better. The fact that it will win over POTD and Drive My Car would tell something that Oscar must have lost their taste in the cinematic art. But who know, they used to do it with Green Book over The Favourite...

I used to think that Belfast was going to be the feel-good, “Green Book” type movie to possibly sneak in and win Best Picture. But now it seems like that is CODA. But, to be honest, I’m super happy about that.

Coda was my favorite film of 2021 so I'd be absolutely overjoyed if it won Best Picture. But it's rare my favorite films of the year win Best Picture.

I’d love for Beyoncé to win with Be Alive, but for some reason there was 0 campaign on Beyoncé’s part. She never even posted the song on social media

The real question: is there such thing as a last minute surge? Are all of these award shows in kahoots and they only choose the noms after they look at other shows’ nominees

I will also be predicting CODA for BP. In addition to everything you guys said, every time I see an article or something on Facebook about Power of the Dog, ALL I SEE IN THE COMMENTS is everyone shitting over it and calling it "boring, stupid, too long, put them to sleep, etc." I know Oscar voters are not these people, but the fact the the GP seems to hate it so much tells me that it is not a unanimously loved film.

I always wanted either Licorice Pizza or Nightmare Alley to win but the fact that CODA did I’m fine with even though it was number 6 out of 10 on my ranking

I wish Coda was easier to see for those of us who missed it in the theater. I've seen almost everything else nominated; I would have loved to have seen that. Lots of good movies and even several who easily could have been nominated for best picture (I would have switched out Don't Look Up for C'mon C'mon, Passing, Tick Tick Boom, Lost Daughter). All in all, a good movie year. It gives me hope for the future of film.

What’s really annoying is that Moonlight and Parasite are just better movies than CODA and people are acting like they are the same thing
